Right peeps,
I reckon we've reached critical mass with regards to the number of texts and phone calls needed to get the wednesday ride organised. esp this week, so I'm trying out a tinterweb based organisation :-\
I dont intend to be the organiser every week, but as I'm on holiday this week I'll be the one...
Sooo.........
here it is
time yet to be confirmed (18:30 to 19:00) but the ride I propose will be from the bottom of eccy woods, then into the peak for the *local* as most of us know it - with a detour on houndkirk and the route through blakka yet to be decided... - devils elbow perhaps.. or a new section aka jerrys... yes folks I said new section !!!!!
I know this week in particular there are tons of interested peeps, hence the omission of the *cough* trail near my house... and the relative short ride... though i have to say this could be a bit of a larf!
now, I have mobile's for fatkid, fbsf, norton, dolly (some hope), jerry (not on here) big G (not on here) but not MARK, so as he works shifts etc... someone txt it to me so be sure he gets an invite.
Once those of us that dont work fixed finishes to the working day have liased with me at approx 16:00 [ they have already been forwarned of this] everyone then gets a text with the start time confirmation!
Phew.....
and of course the real purpose of the public thread is to invite one and all to play
anyone else??
-
I'd certainly be up for riding after work.
However I can't do tonight as I seem to have been volounteered to babysit somebody elses baby so my missus can go to the pub with the mother  Anybody got a childseat I could stick him on....?
Anyway, should be available next week.
Tim
-
Shit, I hope that earns you mega brownie points.
-
I like the idea although I suspect I'd seriously lag behind. Oh I guess you're talking MTB in this thread?

next week i doubt I'll be available, unless the traffic is quiet back from legoland :(
-
Bubbs, or other admin, please edit thread to include the 'word' MTB in the title.
Just to be clear like.
Count me in. Not sure what time I'll finish work so txt me start time and route and I'll try and catch you up or see you in the pub.
FD - have texted Marky Mark already but got no answer. Maybe he's locked himself in ?

Haven't had my mobile turned on. Danged new contraption's confounding me. But I've got the message and I'm keen so will liaise with Nic and see you all later.
-
super!
a local ride for local people!
-
well, I thought that went well!
-
well, I thought that went well!
Apart from NOT being able to ride my bike - oh well I'll learn. And I've found some new leg muscles - to make ache. BTW switch your phone off after this ride otherwise fatdoc will keep sending texts . The internet block thing at my new place of work is really anal - so I'll have to rely on the mobile to know if this going ahead etc in the future.
-
I have 35 bites on my left elbow area alone......moral! dont have punctures on the moors as it goes dark just after its rained and its very humid.....
Also having no front brake, no working front mech mad it very interesting
-

Chubba!!!

f8ckin twat
I'm only jealous because i can't join you all :)
-
I discovered my insect bitten arm this morning at work. Left arm 40 bites counted, right arm none. Left leg 20 bites, right leg none - very odd & infuriatingly itchy.
-
That was great fun. Can't remember my legs aching this much in a long while. The final grind up the hill to my house was miserably slow.
Won't be able to make Wednesday night for the next four weeks due to work and then holiday but I'll be keen to join in when I can. But the advantage of my shift pattern is that I'll be able to get out in daytime frequently.
How is this going to affect my climbing? I need to stash a mat out in the peak so I can cycle out with just shoes and chalkbag.
-
sweet!
sunday, early...... fatkid's in.
home by one...
interested?
(classic Hope circuit probs)

Would love to but I'm working. Have fun.

I need to remember to bring some kind of toxic insect repellent - my bites are driving me mad, and kept me awake lastnight - very odd how my right arm has been spared though
-
I'm on for a Sunday morning ride please, otherwise I'll just stay in bed. Weather looks better for Sunday rather than Saturday too.

give some anti allergy stuff ago, I take clarityn after getting that badly bitten and it definitely calms them down
-
Anti-histamines definitly help with bites.
-
here it is
Ready to ride outside Hope church at 8:30
Sunday, if it's just TLr and fatkid I'm about be beasted on the climbs!
I have a steady route planned, nothing too harsh, be good fun!
-
8.30 :jaw: OK, I'll be there. By the church; do you mean in the pay and display opposite the Woodbine? Or in the little layby on the left just as you get into the village where the 18 Bikes van is usually parked? I'm sure I'll find you anyway.
-
right in front of the church as you get into Hope.
se ya there!
-
The synopsis of my learning curve yesterday that riding with very very fit roadies off road is very very impressive, some hills were cleaned - or near as - that i pushed a lot on. superb day, shame such an early start was needed.
A word to the wise, tlr on his superlight is an up hill off road wad of great proportion! I've not ridden with anyone who has the skills and fitness, truly impressive piece of riding that!
I'll not be riding weds, family duty calls.
I've a window to go check out a ridable way up win hill, this would obviate either the massive push we do now or the treacherous beast of hope cross descent on the *3 hills* ride we most commonly do round ladybower.... interesting... would speed up the ride to then consider it for a midweeker hopefully!
-
are you looking for "legal" bridle way or anyway? - from which side? path up from thornhill looks ride-able-ish (i ran down it the other day), theres also from aston, is from hope cross the easiest ride up?
-
Wow, kind words indeed from Fatdoc, a light bike does wonders on the uphills.
Lets just say that I wasn't at the front on the way backdown though!
Good ride, and one thing about such an ungodly start was that there was still plenty of Sunday left for eating and drinking after the ride.
-
Well I was the muppet of the Sunday ride - uphill rubbish, need to learn how to ride up hill and pick the lines, oh and I think I need to change my pedals. Although fitness wise I can keep going - but I knew fitness wasn't going to be a issue.
Downhill even worse - although I nearly wiped myself out when some idiot blocked the entire path on the way down towards Hope.
Anyway I enjoyed myself & starting to understand my bike, although got loads to learn and avoid injuries for the next 4 weeks. I like early starts as I'm always awake at 5 am.
-
i found the trail i was looking for..
Then after selling a vital organ to afford a sarnie in the woodbine cafe in Hope I attacked the first hill of yesterday with renewed vigour, and finally got up the whole thing. there were gate breaks, as i was on my own - but i'm happier now.
then the huge big warm drops of rain began..... :( i descended my climb to ladybower - full on the rain.... a true XC *let it go* descent, very good, without the usual grit scree to terrify you either!
i can now say that carrying around a pace eVent jacket is worth it, otherwise i'd have been stuffed - with at least 15km to go to the van!
-

whats wrong with the pedals?
they're in black arnt they?
Hmmmmmm.......... might be interested in those ;D
-
Me me me I want in on some hot panty riding action.
Let me know what's happening. I'm away working during the week but Sunday early would be good.
-
your in.
I have a plan, details to follow
-
count me in too, sunshine. i need to keep riding. i've just had another mtbeasting at the hands of tlr tonight. i had to hose my thighs in an ice cold shower afterwards.
-
Sorry I missed both Sunday and last night. Am well up for riding this Sunday since I haven't actually been out on the bike for over a week.
How about a Hope circuit (again)?
-
I'll be there on Sunday.
I'll try and avoid last nights '20ft fall down a rocky bank' shennanigans too. Luckily only a couple of scratches to show for it. The descent from Win Hill to Yorkshire Bridge has to be a good contender for the most technical descent in the Peak award. 250m of down in 650m of along, and a few rocks and roots for good measure.
-
this is all getting full on
right, once FBSF finally tells me of his ridable mythical trail I cant find on win / lose hill i have a route planned for FRIDAY evening. I cant leave sheff till 18:15 and it will be 3 hills, (3 hrs+) starting at the dam of ladybower, up win hill, down it (same side - bear with me.. it's worth it - i hit warp speed on there this week).... 10 mins trek to A57... along it for 5 mins, to turn Right up the road switchbacks..... turn Left... big classic hill / descent (it will be dark by now) to then get to road by derwent... turn right... cross lake at fairholmes..... turn Right... follow until climb up the cobbles of doom to the climb up to top of cut throat bridge descent... full speed descent to stop shy of the road.... turn right... big fast drop to the PUB ;D
same route planned for sunday unless anyone else wants to take the reins regarding routes...
Tlr... where did you come off then??? sounds a bit harsh!! i dont know where the yorkshire bridge is, which kinda makes it tricky... do you mean the beast of hope cross??
-
That route is virtually the reverse of what we did last night, except at the end of our route we climbed from Rowlee bridge up to the very top of Win Hill (it may become footpath at some point....) and the descended due east down Parkin Clough* to Yorkshire bridge.
Parkin Clough was where I came a bit unstuck, makes the Beast look like Tissington Trail. Too hard for me.
*might also be a footpath....(although Via Ferratta might be more appropriate).
-
'steep' doesn't really do it justice:
-
its bad enough walking that path.
-
Gotta say it's a mighty fine effort you got there with only scratches. Is that the only way down to the Yorkshire Bridge from Win Hill?
-
Not at all and imho straight down there is far from the best. Better is the fp to the north, then traverse round but don't drop the last bit of fp but carry on to a secret manmade little dh section which ends at the dam. Less steep, but faster and more fun. ;)
-
i'd heard about that one although i'd also heard it had been dug out by the rangers, i.e. un rideable. have you been down it recently?
-

i meant severn trent btw
-
i'd heard about that one although i'd also heard it had been dug out by the rangers, i.e. un rideable. have you been down it recently?
i take it you are referring to the last, dh, section cofe? I can't imagine they've dug up the footpath but I can imagine they will have ruined the last section. Ask your gaffer since it's his local? Would be good to know.
-
right.
i new nothing of a mini DH section on that hill, and i cant believe no one told me :wall:
i do know parkin clough.
jerry and i found the footpath on OS maps and ended up carrying... for an hour. that was 6 yrs ago, never been back...
I'd need my demo 8 to ride it... some of the blind step downs are 3 ft to blind if i remember? sick dude...
if there is a more subtle way down there then
WOW
fbsf is comin round for a few galleons of fizzy cold lager and a session on the OS map (no, dont)
i would now like to formally suggest the friday ride is as posted, the sunday ride the reverse incl the *subtle* way off win hill and at that point I relieve myself of route plans and some other poor fool suggests some rides
my ride times are usually
-weds, 18:30 rush to eccy woods
- sun, awful early... like to be home b 4 13:00
*lets do this*
shit, i'd better do some climbing soon, or bubba will throw me off the forum!!!
-
I can't get a pass out for Friday - although the route looks beyond my abilities at the moment - especially in the dark. The wife to be has organised for us to go to some brown nosing event - should be great.....NOT, anyway she's told me I can't come - That's me told.
I'm up for Sunday though - early start good for me.
-
Early Sunday floats mine
-
i'd heard about that one although i'd also heard it had been dug out by the rangers, i.e. un rideable. have you been down it recently?
i take it you are referring to the last, dh, section cofe?
that's right. not been able to find anyone who can confirm. JB doesn't know but heard some rumours.
-
directions please gents...
a PM would be fine ;)
-
i'm thinkin sunday for that little descent. we'd be dropping in in the dark tonite... even i think that's a bit wayward..!
-
FD, the dh section was really nothing to get too excited about, just a little descent to finish off the fp version of Winhill. You could probably still ride the same bit of hillside almost anywhere without a trail having been dug.
So meet tonight at 1830 at Yorkshire Bridge? Up and down Winhill somehow, either up fp and back down same or up west side ascent and down fp or the Beast, up Hagg farm switchbacks, down to Fairholmes (should be lovely and muddy) over reservoir (not swimming), up Whinston Lee Tor cobbles, down to Devils elbow and Ladybower pub.
Who's in?
-
I am
-
not tonight. i'm down for sunday though - do we have a start time? assume it's from layby on A57?
-
Not riding tonight as I'm at work on my road bike, but I'll be there on Sunday.
It comes to something when you have to get up earlier at the weekend to ride than during the week to get work!
-
It comes to something when you have to get up earlier at the weekend to ride than during the week to get work!
you're not wrong.
-
Early morning rides are great. Should we not re-name this thread: Fatdoc's XC Saddle Sniffers club?
-
err... no
but have no doubt there will be moderators in the private forum plotting my humiliation as we type :(
Norton & I have put an end to our dithering and the final plan is 18:30 tonight at the ladybower Inn carpark. This guarantees I get a pint at the end of the ride, as it's friday my beer inner body time clock will be screaming at me by the end of the ride... :beer2:
As for sunday, I'm obliged to pour myself out of bed at some stupid time due to other committments in the afternoon [i.e; a family]. As there are so many of us on here currently into MTB it's not unreasonable to have more than 1 ride... I know Norton is often keener for a more normal start time on sundays....
-
... like nearer Monday than Saturday :)
-
right, here it is...
ready to ride at 9 a.m prompt tomorrow at carpark after the Yorkshire Bridge pub (on the right if coming from bamford) off the A6013
after last night I'm tempted to do the same route, much as norton suggested above, but with a quick jaunt up the A57 to get to climb the far easier track / rd to lockerbrook to avoid climbing the hagg farm switchbacks...
if someone wants to tempt me to do the route in reverse and then go searchin for this elusive trail down to the dam off win hill i could be persauded... depends on numbers.
I'll txt non forum members (jerry and big G)
for rant of the day see the general MTB thread btw ;)
-
I'm off the web for the rest of the night.. i'll check back first thing.. but w all know where I'll be and when!
-
That went pretty well didn't it? Only 1 broken frame, 1 broken fork and 2 damaged legs to report from a 25km ride.
The legs and the forks all belonged to Fatdoc, but he took it fairly well I thought.
Other than that it was a good laugh: mud, grit, hills, rocks and roots but no rain. And all back in time for lunch.
A few pictures to follow hopefully.
-
be good to see those pics mate..
knees bruised, cut shin, strained neck, brusied bonce and genarlly a bit stiff... not bad for a simple front wheel washout.. and accompanying smack down.. no knee pads would have been bad... very bad... a day spent in from the Wii is in order i feel.
good news ; i fixed the fork 8) long story about an O ring and a travel adjuster which is now sorted....cant help thinking that trying to catch Cofe back up whilst on a deflating fork has something to do with my little skirmish with the floor ::)
bad news; those shifters of mine are f8cked. on order for wiggle now.... BTW great deals on there for shimano stuff, 40% off a lot... I'm stocking up on mechs etc!! nect years prices are huge! god bless the global economy.... most of which is propped up by my XC MTB habit  God, and I thought downhilling was expensive!
hope to be back up and running by weds...
-
good ride yesterday - enjoyed it - glad i dragged myself out of bed early.
a few of tlr's pics:

I'm planning on getting some shares with Shimano & wiggle and then ensure that fatdoc breaks lots of things - which he seems to have a particular skill at. I'm surprised there's a fully functioning bike in his collection at the moment.
Maybe we can save the world economy if fatdoc keeps riding!!!!!
Maybe its gear trashing week - I got 2 punctures riding to work today, both within a mile or so of each other, thankful not as inconvienent as a total frame or fork failure.
-
We started so early in the morning that it was still night time at the back!
-
so tomorrow evening's weather looks ok. any preferences for routes? 6.30 at Eccy Woods or further afield?
Hope, Mam Nick, Baber Booth, Mam Tor, Rushup, Dirtlow, Cavedale ? Anybody?
-
I'm up for it, local + or bigger not yet sure. Decide on the morrow
-
Can't do Wednesday night, but certainly on for a Sunday morning ride. Maybe over Edale way?
-
Slight change of plan. Will be working late so 1830 start will be impossible. Let me know where you are going and I will hopefully catch you up (in the pub).
-
I'm now dependant on big G's work finish... so it will be 18:30 to 18:45 from mine, a local ride for local people - with all the local variants... this means catching me up at eccy woods at 19:15 ish a real possibility for you norton... txt me l8tr
-
sunday now dodgy.. esp as rear brake fucked and new rear wheel hub yet to arrive :(
If a miracle occurrs I'll be up for any ride that gets me home at 12:45 ish.... bit like the last few sunday rides.....
Big G and dave are out.... Norton and Tlr are in....[+ ? cofe]

My plan to keep the world economy afloat on fatdoc's mtb habit are going well - another piece of broken equipment yesterday.
-
there's a good chance. need to sort the chain suck problem before then.
-
Have you checked your chain wear cofe?
-
I'm sure that between Fatdoc and Cofe they must have one working bike. The other can ride my Bullit round. 39lbs isn't too bad for an XC bike is it?
-
i thought the chain line was too close to the chain stay.....
i'll not have a defo to ride until sat after 4 p.m. coz I'm waiting for a maxle rear hub to get my new rear wheel built, once ready i then take bike in, swap wheel, get the rotor on it it should have and hope that my brake lever issue is just a simple circlip adjustment. In theory i could rob a DH brake off my old Demo and use the old wheel on sunday.... we'll see how desperate I get!!
If I get too pissed off i"ll have to turn to the dark side for the day :-[
-
there's some burrs on chainring but rear mech seems to have lost tension too. combination of the two. think the chain is ok.
-
You need to measure the chain Cofe, not just think it's ok ::) Let me know if you want to borrow a chain measuring tool. And I'll send FD round  Chain suck has nothing to do with the rear mech but the burrs won't be helping. If you have a Shimano chain on now try a SRAM, sometimes that can help.
FD, you could always borrow my old hardtail, or Mrs Sharley's bike? :P
-
up to a certain amount of chain stretch you can replace just the chain - over this and you will get recommended to change cassette and chain rings:
reference (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chains.html)
If the rivet is less than 1/16" past the mark, all is well.
If the rivet is 1/16" past the mark, you should replace the chain, but the sprockets are probably undamaged.
If the rivet is 1/8" past the mark, you have left it too long, and the sprockets (at least the favorite ones) will be too badly worn. If you replace a chain at the 1/8" point, without replacing the sprockets, it may run OK and not skip, but the worn sprockets will cause the new chain to wear much faster than it should, until it catches up with the wear state of the sprockets.
If the rivet is past the 1/8" mark, a new chain will almost certainly skip on the worn sprockets, especially the smaller ones.
-
reference (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chains.html)
The standard way to measure chain wear is with a ruler or steel tape measure. This can be done without removing the chain from the bicycle. The normal technique is to measure a one-foot length, placing an inch mark of the ruler exactly in the middle of one rivet, then looking at the corresponding rivet 12 complete links away. On a new, unworn chain, this rivet will also line up exactly with an inch mark. With a worn chain, the rivet will be past the inch mark.
Is this way of measuring chains still applicable? Isn't it metric yet?
-
i prefer my 'hunch' technique. Look at the bike from, say, 6 feet away and guess.
I'll file the burrs down first and then see what happens. regardless, the rear mech isn't working properly which can't be helping as there's less tension in the chain making sucky-suck-suck more likely.

fuck that, use a chain gauge tool.
but seriously, the best way to get chain longevity is to have a series of chains that you swap regularly so that the sprockets and the series of chains all wear at the same slow rate.
since I have a near maintenance free bike I can't be arsed with the above, and neither will cofe be. I reckon the solution is to let me borrow the Ibis for a ride and see what I reckon, :kiss2:
-
fuck that, use a chain gauge tool.
wise words - never used these measurements. i just looked them up as more specific than "up to a certain amount"
but seriously, the best way to get chain longevity is to have a series of chains that you swap regularly so that the sprockets and the series of chains all wear at the same slow rate.
this sounds like a good idea - despite knowing about chain wear i have never successfully replaced my chain in time - always just got chain suck ::)
-
firstly...
just change the damn chain (sram of course).
secondly...
may I here and now praise 18bikes
they f8ckin rock....
I go over to Hope, they look at the bike... they say "15 mins chap"
I go back, piston in brake back in, circlip sorted.. no charge, no fuss... sorted
any shop in sheff do that?
would they f8ck...
respect
BTW, that chain line is too close to the frame cofe mate, and it's chewing the carbon!!!! :o
-
Do we have any takers for a Sunday ride then? Does anybody's bike still actually work?
My suggestions would either be the 16 mile Edale circle involving Jacobs Ladder or maybe the 25 mile Linacre circuit, but that might take too long for those on budget.
Happy to do anything really, forecast looks OK.
-
I'm bowing out of a big ride and just doing a local training ride. This leaves you lot a non time limited ride.
-
Can't make a ride this evening, climbing training is taking precedence. Or is it Dolly's stash of beer that is enticing me to train on a Wednesday?
Will be out at the weekend though if anyone wants to hook up.
-
get dolly out next weds... then i'll drink his beers as well ;)
i'm off to the theatre!
donrt worry, it's horrid henry :o
-
Back to usual plan of a Sunday morning big ride. Would be well up for Edale circuit. Any takers for a not too early start?
-
I've got orders to go to church due to getting married next week. Shit 7 days of single life......then its all down-hill. Unless we start at 6 am.
-
Not to early at all from my point of view please - going to a wedding the night before!
-
I've got orders to go to church due to getting married next week.
That sounds like an unusually long time to be waiting at the altar :P
-
Sounds good to me Tim, and I ain't making any concessions for church goers :spank:
-
Any takers for this Wednesday's fun filled blast to the pub?
Might start needing lights soon boys. :jaw:
-
I may make Wednesday nights ride - depending on 1) Work finishing on time - although my new job is slack afternoon surgery can drag on abit. 2) Well- that chilled out girl-friend is getting about fired up about the wedding. But abit of a ride to the pub may be in order. You certainly will need lights unless you plan to home by 7:30 - Autumn has arrived ...so much for the summer.
-
scabs on knee proving rather irksome, though they've stopped oozing plasma onto my clothes and bed linen. I reckon by not riding tonight i'll be rested enough for llangella on friday..
look what i just got
www.bicycling.com/gear/detail/0,7989,s1-15-65-1462-0,00.html (http://www.bicycling.com/gear/detail/0,7989,s1-15-65-1462-0,00.html)
I got the top for £100. Seems OK, a little heavy for the big rides up hill and down dale.. but would be superb for trail centres (whereby i mean pootle up fireroad to then go down). we'll see, the wicking bit is very very good, the extra bulk is fine [slight]. no way i'd pay full price though...
-
:o
-
Might up up for tonight depending on weather and timing, tell me where and when.
Only problem is that I don't really have any suitable lights so shouldn't be out much after 7.3 or 8.
-
6.30 Eccy Woods at bus stop between Dore Road and Abbey Lane. txt me Tim if you want to meet closer to home.
-
I think my luck is about to improve, don't drown out there lads. Btw, where do I get a proper water proof little bag for my mobile?
-
Try Aquapac, Boxit or Otterbox / Pelican for something more substantial.
-

Buy a waterproof phone?
Oops, my mistake. You just forked (no pun intended) out a fortune for a jphone didn't you? :kiss2:
-
So it must be Autumn. There was only me and big Jerry out, everyone else wimped out. It was chucking down with rain, we dare not leave solid trails for fear of being swept away in a mini flood. And most importantly Jerry couldn't light his pipe cos of the wind on the tops. Apart from the latter a great night out.
-
Looked more like a monsoon than abit of autumn rain to me!!!! Good effort getting out.
So how long before the doc breaks his iphone ..... we could have a sweep stake.
-
If it breaks u don't get a wedding present!
I can't ride, puss pouring off knee, I'm gutted
-
Me, Cofe and Mr Barton did 2 laps of Llandegla black yesterday, and didn't get rained on! Trail was in reasonable condition all things considered, plenty of puddles but no deep mud.
The BMXy parts are pretty good fun, worth doing a couple of laps for familiarisation.
Good cafe, shop and facilities too.
-
I wento LLandegla yesterday and :agree:
Black is a good trail, far better than Coed-y-Brenin or Marin imho. Still not really that technical (2/5) and the first climb is pretty boring but overall a solid 4/5 for quality.
Took 1.5 hrs for the black in pouring rain and then I found out there's no showers there, 'till next year. I couldn't wait that long so had to get the missus to hose me down using the bike jet wash. Ouch.
-
I thought Llandegla was a bit crap - some of the downhills were nice but the rest was nothing special. Probably didn't help much being on a DH bike :) The northshore is a waste of wood.
-
:agree:
It is crap, it's man made 'mountain' biking :) My 4/5 was for man made shizzle. But it is way better than Coed or the Marin so I suggest you don't go there Lord Bubbs.
To set the record straight then, and for future reference let's take a couple of reference rides and compare everything else to those? For those in Sheffield the Wednesday night standard ride of Eccy Woods, Lim*, Houndkirk, classic Blacka would get 2/5 technical difficulty, and 3/5 quality. Add an extra technical point for BS.
In comparison the man mades (imho) would get;
Llandegla - 2/5 technical, 2/5 quality
North Face (Grisedale) - 1/5, 1/5
Coed (Tawr) - 1/5, 2/5
Coed (dragon/black) - 0/5 (ie a trail ride not mtb), 1/5
Marin - 1/5, 1/5
where 0 quality = don't bother going and 5 is stunning
and 0 technical = flat trail riding and 5 = I wish I'd brought my downhill bike and Steve Peat to ride it
Other well known trails as points of reference could be;
Lakes - Loughrigg Terrace - 1/5 technical, 2/5 quality
Langdale circuit incl Loughrigg, Hodge Close, Iron Keld, - 2/5, 4/5
Tour de Mont Blanc (5 days) - 5/5, 5/5
I'm sure the boys at Vert Graphics will have a different opinion but then I don't have sponsors to keep happy ;)
Any opinions?
-
well interesting.
firstly, bubs on the big hit when not fit is no way to appreciate langdella.
it's the only man made trail i've ever been to, and from the post above looks like the only in north wales i'll ever bother with!
with my new partially separated shoulder I'll be trying to get there asap (smooth, but still fun! shoulder doesnt like jarring rocks :'()
i have to say pedalling in like a loon on a 140mm travel bike to clear the tabletop at the and of the top jumpy bit was not too dis similar an experience in trying to do the same on an 8 inch travel DH rid at hamsterly... i.e: damn fine riding... never did clear the hamsterly one though
as for ride grades....
I'm agreeing with norton :o
yes, i know it's a rare event!
I'd add a tech grade for new new burbage.....
i'd say just about any of the 3 hills combos in derwent honeypot are 3/5, 3/5
not done enough in the Lakes...
but i'd say torver, dunnderdale... seathwaite then up and over walna scar is 4/5 and 3/5
best solo ride i've done in the UK... simply awesome... (it's not in the v graphics book, they mix it up, and go the wrong way round a bit too ;)
BTW if i can get enough dressings under my knee pads weds looks ON for me... nothing too harsh (shoulder excuse again, and i've not ridden for 10 days...)
-
How far are you guys riding on Wednesday nights?
I could be tempted to come this Wednesday, if downhillers with a slight aversion to uphills are accepted.
Saying that, I did ride the Veterbrate Cheedale loop this weekend which I actually quite enjoyed (even the uphill bits!). I'm rediscovering the joys of the hardtail as well... ;D
-
fast boys leave eccy woods 6:30, me a bit after, you'll need lights now. Pub by 21:30. Very welcome!
-
llandegla was ok. not great. the bits either side of the black bits are unremarkable. the cli-machx nr machynlleth and nant yr arian are better. the latter feeling a bit more like natural riding having a few farm tracks and gates to open. i've not ridden loads of places though. trail centres tick a box and are fun but they're not really a patch on real riding.
I'm sure the boys at Vert Graphics will have a different opinion but then I don't have sponsors to keep happy Wink
;D
we have no sponsors to keep happy in our next book (http://www.v-outdoor.co.uk/products/mountain_biking/mountain_biking_trail_centres_-_the_guide.php) - it's a pretty straight up account. we're not a magazine. i imagine we'll get beef for something though. ::)
-
Where abouts at Eccy Woods? Any chance of a link to a map? I think I'll decide whether to try and be fast or not on the day. Need to dig some lights out from somewhere around the house.
-
llandegla was ok. not great. the bits either side of the black bits are unremarkable.
That sums it up well imho. I thought Penmachno was much better despite the majority of climbs being on fireroad. But again, i've not been to that many trail centres either. I fancy the Glentress red though as everyone seems to love it...shame it's not nearer.
What's the Cwmcarn XC trail like?
-
I'll try to sort a link out, coz I'm a bit shit at computa stuff....
penamachmo is also quite easy to get to?? i'm well up for fireroad only climbing!! as cofe says, it's not real mtb, so why make it hard for yourself... i thought i'd been told panmachno was a bit flat!!!
the cwm carn XC is meant to be ace, esp if you use the uplift :o
bizarrely i'm more tempted by that than the DH there at the mo. .. i'm too out of practice and already too darn injured....
i'm considering the penmachno day out as soon as the monsoon relents, it's got to dry out sometime surely??
-

i'm keen to ride penmachno. not supposed to have jumps and stuff, just good old singletrack. i don't mind climbs on fire road - if you're building climbs otherwise then they need to be pretty interesting.
cwmcarn supposed to be v. good. - it's also got the downhill stuff, obviously.
-

Yeah, it's near Betws-y-coed. Some of it's a bit flat but there's some nice descents too.
-
On the off chance of anyone reading this, whereabouts in/at Eccy Woods is everyone meeting?
-
sorry Oli,
no one rode...
illness, work and injury devastated the field...
if i'm out next week i'll sort it out earlier on in the day..
-
It's alright I managed to find fatboyslimfast and some other blokes he knew and had a good ride.
Although riding back to Crookes from Totley when knackered felt like a bit of a struggle.
-
Hurrah!!!
after a near kidney wrecking dose of painkillers I could sleep on the shoulder!!
I'm sure i'll be out on sunday now
-
Sorry Oli for not answering earlier. Work and football watching committments prevented me from reading UKB and turning up on Wednesday night respectively.
-
Any plans for tomorrow? Weather looks ok for a change.
I'm up for a morning ride if anybody fancies it.
Tim
-

oh dear,
going for test ride tonight, been told by shoulder specialist all is not well....
-
Is UKB MTB XC going out Sunday AM? I might be free.
-
Sorry, not me. Will be bouldering :), shoulder injury permitting :(
-
I'm not around Sunday morning (hopefully hungover and in bed in a hotel), but should be up for something Sunday afternoon if you fancy a later start...
-
later start is my middle name. that's not true actually. 'danger' is my middle name. fancy a ride further south in peak. will see if i'm still free come sat/sun...
-
Out with the lark Sunday, probs short hope jaunt
-
Up for tomorrow, 6.30 at the usual, unless I'm late back from work :kiss2:
-
No riding for me tomorrow night, I'm taking my In-Laws back to Manchester Airport for their return flight to Oz.
Probably off up to the Dales on Sunday for a longer ride if anyone fancies joining me and Cofe.
-
This thread looks more like the curse of shuolder injuries - I was thinking of getting out tonight but my house looks like a bomb site, has no food in it and we only got back from Italy at 1a.m and now I'm back at work, oh and its bloody cold. I suppose its welcome back to reality. Oh well half day tomorrow. :(
-
good to see you're back, and that being a GP isnt too taxing ;D
fatkid, are you working the weekend? I'm struggling to find XC riders for cwm carn on sunday... i dont wanna go there on my own (everyone else - FBSF, bubs and mad boy are doing uplifted DH)...so.... can you get a day pass?
If not i reckon i'll bag it, norton cant go, neither jerry, graham, tlr or cofe !!!!
-
Or you could ride your Demo 8 you big shaven wuss ;)
-
Soz fatdoc got to do some work at the weekend - well 6 hours anyway, shame as my slot is on Sunday, could probably make Saturday, but thats probably no good for you.
-
I am up in the Lakes all next week if anyone fancies hooking up for some off road entertainment ?
(So won't be out next Wednesday).
-
i'm out today, unless it really really sheds it when i want to leave
provisional plan is 17:30 to do some of the sheffield round trail (i mean walk) and then meet up as usual at 18:30 at the eccy woods meet point
-
it was indeed wet...
winter conditions prevailed, harsh...
i've seen better conditions in the middle of winter, incredible amount of water, i think the watertable is actually above the surface of the moors!!!
-
There will still be a water shortage the next time we get a mildly dry summer which at the moment is unlikely.
Time to drag out the winter kit from the bottom of those draws - and buy a rear light that doesn't fall off!!!
-
Not out tomorrow evening, will be in Londonium working and getting chest diseases.
-
i'll be out, if the weather's foul i'll do some short ride in woods / not on the tops...
important ride for me, seeing shoulder doc thurs.... injection and MRI time.... it's not looking good... might be out of climbing for a month... biking probs OK... if injection no good and MRI as bad as i reckon it will be i'm facing 6 months of rehab, 10 weeks off work and a serious weight gain...
bollox

I'll not be out tonight, but should be on for something on Sunday hopefully.

Don't try it. I'll jack your ass like a looter in a riot.

I have no idea what the hell that means..... and quite frankly I'm now just a little scared
I'll be keen for sunday, as long as the shoulder has got over it's needling!

I refer the honourable gentleman to the lyrics of a song by the beat combo "Cypress Hill" called "Insane in the Brain". I believe it was popular with the young people some years ago.
-
ahhh....
just had 10mls of stuff pumped into my shoulder.... omg it hurt :o
good news is that on examination there is no other signif tear / rip so once acj less inflamed i'll be sampling the delights of this purrfect weather on bike and on the grit
sunday is a bit dodgy... see how i am....
-
Fatdoc on the receiving end of a large needlle....
-
6.30 Eccy Woods, whatever the weather. Any takers? Percy?
-
Might make it but I've got late surgery so I'll probably miss you unless the traffic is considerably better than it has been the past few days.
-
6.30 Eccy Woods, whatever the weather. Any takers? Percy?
Ah, actually I went out at lunchtime for a first experimental ride on my new bike - as I mentioned to tlr last night, I need a little practise working out how the bike works before I get sandbagged by you lot! Anyway, I had a great hour and a half in the Peak (houndkirk, devils elbow, etc, etc) and didn't die so when I get back from Moscow at the start of November, I'll try and get in a session or two with you big boys.
Oh, and I have just learnt how much easier MTB is compared to road biking. Piece of piss, although infrequently terrifying. The only down side is now I've got mud all over my lycra.... :o
-
Not for me tonight, although the weather has been dry most of the day out here in the Peak so it should be OK.
I have today realised that as my missus is going away for a few days tomorrow I'd best stay in with her and not come home muddy and smelling of beer at 10.30pm. And she's cooking a curry.
Still, should be out both days at the weekend if anyone is interested in joining me.

I'm gonna make you sooo regret that.... and you want it to me... coz norton will have you for that!!!!
I presume the devils elbow is in fact a swamp??
there is talk of an official clear up / drainage day planned by the wildlife Trust, once dates available I'll be go to give a hand / ensure the water bars can be kickered off etc...
-
Didn't do Devils elbow after all - after further consultation of a map I realise that DE is the lefthand of the two bridalways. I went down the righthand one which proved to be wet, steep, narrow and full of rocks. Still, just proves that its is possible to ride a mtb at speed with your eyes closed!
And mountain bikes with their big wide bars and tyres, plethora of pecker gears and safety brakes are easier to ride than road bikes, honest. Theres no way I'd have got my Lightspeed over Houndkirk! ;)

Bridalway? :o Which lady did you have with you? ;)
-
Well Perc, you were warned!!
-
tonight?
looks bonza!!
no wind, yippee!!!
-
you'll be out tonight then Perc and Fatkid to show us how its done?
no, maybe not then ;D
-
Percy is in Russia, so we'll have to wait for the masterclass in bridalwear riding.
I should be Ok for tonight.
-
you'll be out tonight then Perc and Fatkid to show us how its done?
no, maybe not then ;D
I've never said I'm good at this Mountain bike lark - in fact shit would be nearer the turth, however I can ride a road bike rather quickly up a hill as long as there is tarmac.
-
once the disparity between you roadie climbing and MTB riding reduces I'm really rather looking foreward to a few side bets on Tlr vs fatkid climbing times.... ;)
i'll push, ta.
-
see ya all in 2 weeks, off to sing.. for a wedding !!!
-
C'mon then boys, the winter training starts this week so we are fit enough for Yossarian's visit. Who's up for it?
And does anyone know if the Crown is still open or do we need a new route.
-
The doc tells me he's not riding in the peaks in its current water-logged condition.
I drove past the crown the other day & it looked open - has it shut down then???
-
OMFG
the best beer in south yorks is in jepordy???
I'm not sure on next 2 weds... working late / family committments...
oh, and if the weather's / trails are shit f8ck it... i'll turbo...
-

if you want to be ready for my visit then i suggest you all take up competitive lard eating.
and give a lung to charity.

Sounds like we're ready then, well me and the Doc anyway. Fatkid, tlr & Percy might object to that sentiment.
The Crown's lease is allegedly up for renewal and the current landlord ain't re-taking it, according to the Totley grapevine. :pissed:
-
oh well, the present tennant does seem to drink more than everyone i know put together
:pissed:
i may ride tomorrow, but it wont b with the big weds crew... i want my own docile steady pace on route of my choosing :-[
-
I went out for a local spin this evening and spent most of the time with the bottom bracket under-water - so have fun.
I'm on a diet to get my weight down for the sportive season - married life is damaging my waist line, so no lard or beer.
-
Oh god....
you get any faster on the road machine & there will be no point training with you at all......
thats why you gave me that crate of lager last week? :beer1:
*hic*
-
I can heartily recommend the Norovirus diet as an aid to losing weight. Dropped me nicely below 70kgs. Didn't feel much like riding or climbing though.
-

I spent all last night vomiting my guts outs and lost about 3Kg, now though I can't walk up a flight of stairs without getting sob.
-
you guys are sooo *on the razor*
seriously... hope yr better soon... twas a couple of hrs of ipod (cheese trance of course), solitude, a knackered battery on light -yep, i bust summat else :'( - and clearin the local trails that the walkers tried valiantly to booby trap. c8nts... rather fun... cool moon too
-
After having my head down the toilet for the past 20 hours I can finally eat & drink without chucking my guts up 5 minutes later.

Guess who will be laughing next time I get you out on your Wilier.
-
ooohhhh........
:off:
MTB this thread , matey ;)
-
Anybody out for a ride tonight? Might be a tad breezy, but not too chilly.
I'd even consider a couple of hours nighttime roadbiking if that was preferred......
Has Percy been seen on his new mountain bike yet? Has he had his baptism by Norton?
-
I'm stuffed to the gills with cold :'(
Out sunday probs...
Sending light off today, needs new cell (warranty job though.. be back in a week)
Percy does indeed to be induced by the Norton....
I will be taking out my helmet cam to get the footage of a lifetime :P
Sunday then???
-
I'm working - the joys of out of hours GP - can't wait!!!!
Sunday - I'm also working - and isn't it suppose to snow ???
-
Hopefully going to Yorkshire Grit on Sunday (in the snow...) and if not then will probably ride with Kim.
Unless Percy is riding being Nortoned in which case I might just have to come along.
Pretty uninspired by mountain bikes at the moment given the appalling condition of the trails. Not much fun, and it just damages them even more. So uninspired in fact that I've been running twice so far this week instead.
-
Not riding tonight, still full of cold too, well full enough to have to go to the pub to watch the footie instead. Will be out Sunday unless it is mint for bouldering.
-
i'll see how i am... my nose burns.....a lot.

You don't really strike me as a football fan Norton - unless its your closet acivity.
-
For all you soft lads who thought it too cold last night, or who wanted to stay in and play on your turbo trainers, it was one of the best winter rides I've ever had.
For those that know the Peak "Narnia" was absolutely mint being totally frozen but deviod of snow.
It was so dry out there I didn't have to wash my bike when I got home ;D
A word of warning though - the Forestry bods have totally trashed the bottom of the nice climb from Fairholmes Memorial car park up to Lockerbrook. There are signs at both ends saying the track is closed, but honestly it really is closed!

Looks like it was fun - just wandering what's the red thing sticking out the top of your helmet??
I'm still waiting for my new helmet. First CRC sent the wrong one, then they sent the correct one but it was a size too small - labelled wrongly. So hopefully I'll have it back by the weekend
-
I was out bouldering at Burbage. I've been without lights for a couple of weeks, but some tasty new ones should be arriving this week so I should be back in the game. So long as its not wet. Or Cold. Or windy. Or dark.
-
my lights are back (today).. free new battery off USE ;D
Have to say riding to work at 06:30 through all the shite this morning was not not funny
Norton which climb do you mean?? the fireroad one??
narnia.... not ridden that for many a year.. Hmmm
-

Good effort. You want to be careful at your age, you'll catch your death.

Not me in the picture Fatkid.
Fatdoc: yes the fireroad up from the Memorial car park to Lockerbrook.
-
can you get halfway up and then use the footpath on the left??
this is one the best warm ups / fast ways up the hill to get to the flying mile i know... i've heard the flying mile is getting smoothed over... god... do the peak park want me to build / dig trails to keep the technicality of the MTB scene in these vallys or are they just trying to piss me off!!
BTW, lights back 8)
-
Why is it that I can never sleep after these Wednesday night rides???? I've been in the land of wide awakeness since 3a.m.
-
Drink 2 cans of beer when hosing the bike down, hot shower & then crash...
-
Fantastic - my Wilma 5s have just landed on my desk so I will be able to come out and play next Wednesday.
Bugger me they are bright. And small. And light. I am suitably impressed.
They will be good for some night time bouldering action too when mounted on a tripod.
-

Did that - fell asleep like a baby - then bang I was wide awake at 3 am. Happens after everyone of these rides. Fantastic - my Wilma 5s have just landed on my desk so I will be able to come out and play next Wednesday.

We can have a little competition - I have 2 exposure lights on my bars. Mind you still rode like sh1t lastnight. Role on Spain hopefully 6 days or so of daily riding will improve my skills a touch.
-
norton's light combo was the brightest last night.. mainly coz fatkid doesnt have his light sfacing foreward ::)
had my light on for 3 1/2 hrs... near always on full... stll over 50% charge left 8)
the 2009 USE lights burn times rock ;D
-
I'm out tomorrow as usual.
For those that know my local woods to link up into eccy woods then I'm keen for burbage track as in last week... Whatever, but can't leave till 19:00
Post or txt as usual.
I love my bike :-))
-
I'll be out tonight - I need to test my new lights. 7pm is fine for me, where's best to meet?
-
may i suggest Norton & you sort / pleasure yourselves from up your end and then those of us from round me meet you at the bottom of eccy woods at 19:45? reasons are graham's finish time from work is a bit nebulous, as is Dave's & I want to ride my local woods to eccy woods at least part way....
Or, if you dont mind the trip up abbey lane i''ll show you around my local woods (which i presume you havnt ridden?) at 19:00... rather fun.. esp with the zero traction the mud is currently providing..
-
My work finish time is getting later - 2 of the other docs were sick today - so we are clearing up their patients plus all the twats that come with colds and sorethroats. I'm sick of hearing 'Doc I don't want to be ill over Christmas' - join the fucking club. Or can I have some antibiotics so I'm not unwell over Christmas. Now please f*** off - and stop coming to see me with silly things. :wall: :wall:
P.s I'm usually more sympathetic.
-
Well, that was rather unpleasant..
I'll more choosey with conditions for a while.
That was Shite.
-
Porter Valley was like a long mud shute - well the top bit was. Think I spent longer cleaning my bike and kit afterwards than I did actually riding. Oh and I was freezing cold for most of it - maybe a turbo session would have been more constructive?
-
I know it was Monday last night but went out for a spin with big J, it was bloody freezing. I have never worn so many clothes cycling. And my other pedal broke. And despite stripping and rebuilding my forks they're still not right. And I've got a bald back tyre. And I can't be bothered to fit the new chain and front derailleur I have sat up in the shed.
And where were all the boulderes on such a mint evening?
On a positive note I did a few warm up problems at Burbage North straight under the gate by the light of my Hope Vision 2 which was well bright enough so the Vision 4 or equivalents would be great for night bouldering.
-
Norton - do you bike maintenance in the kitchen - I get away with it rather than freezing my arse of in the garage. Great way to keep the wife out of there anyway.
The doc'c and my Spain trip has turned into a Downhill trip ....OMFG. The doc has put his philosophical view on this after much research that it'll all be fine. Myself...I'll let you know when I'm back from Spain probably having experienced their finest trauma care.
-
Well, I have flu. Real flu, like fucked. By walking 100 metres to the offey flu. Like too tired to get of bed till 10 despite 3 kids jumping all over the house flu, like my work schedule being fucked for weeks by not being able to practice
And I worked Xmas day, and it was horrific, and
Well......
Spain DH!!! Fuckin GET in.. 300 euros off ( coz the Xcers that were gonna go have pulled out with broken wrist, so cash wise it's cheaper to give us the DH holiday, give fatkid 1:1 teaching for 3 days in malaga bike park & I get to rock the trails fully padded on my Marin)
Now that's one damn week to look foreward too!!!
And I don't need to worry about Aerobic fitness, I must learn to jump in spds asap!!
As for trauma, the spainish are way better resources than the uk, I hope they come good!!!
-
as I've had a luddite induced memory blank on how to embed youtube have a look at this link
www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM1s50nB0v8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM1s50nB0v8)
it's the trails above Bubion in the sierra nevada... some of the trails are used for the DH and XC... looks OK to me... though the step up after the gap jump is perhaps not high on the agenda!!
ohhh.... yes!!!
Has to be said as i bokked this with a sterling : euro ratio some 40% now worse in our favour ther'll not be many more jaunts like this in the near future... christ it's gonna be expensive!!
-
There is something so sweet about riding trails with dust plumes....
Today was supposed to be the start of Fred Whitton training, but its foggy as fuck in Sheffield, and my nose has started streaming. Bugger.
Wifey is hardier than me though and is out on her mountain bike whilst I get the meatballs made for tonights dinner.
-
ooohh
the pasting of a link from youtube looks like it auto embeds.. either that or the mods have taken pity on me... unlikely that..

Don't get me wrong, it looks fucking excellent riding, but none of that is what I'd consider DH. A DH bike would be overkill for those trails.
Do you mean the step-up after the road? Jon that looks piss, you're easily capable of doing that ! We want video of you spanking it :)
www.freecaster.tv/1000006_1006286 (http://www.freecaster.tv/1000006_1006286)
That Shley video is great - mental terrain!
-
I might be tempted :devangel:
I'm not taking the demo, Marin with 150mm front single crown fork seems the best option to me
-
Looks awesome, FD. As for spanish casualty, I expect a full report on your return!
I've managed to get out a couple of times over new years - taking advantage of the permafrost on all the trails that have been boggy as owt for the last month, and its been top. However, todays warm up - helping give CPR to a collapsed, post-festive-season, new-years-resoution-to-get-fit jogger, was an interesting diversion, but put something of a dampener on the whole ride! And the permafrost is starting to thaw...
-
:o :o :o :o :o
There, that proves it. All MTBs should be allowed on footpaths... so we can resusitate the great british public!!
that permafrost was well set in today, well stanage was rock solid anyways (apparent north)... my riding however comprised of a few runs through the boggy leaf infested trails in graves park :'( as I try to get the angle of the helmet cam right on my full facer! Sounds a simple job? trust me, it's a right damn faff! seem to have a plan now though.
doubt i'll do any real MTB tomorrow, I'll play for an hour then consider another freezing spotter session at stanage (aka fatherly duties)
-
Jeez Percy, that's rather intense!
I suspect i'll be in need of CPR when I start the new-year's fitness regime next week
-
Forecast until the middle of Jan seems to be dry and baltic - getting proper cold again next week, so all good for MTB action. Even managed to get out for a quick 20 miles on my way to work this morning (on the road bike, sorry) and the roads were dry, and there were no dying runners which was great. Deffo psyched for making the most of the weather whilst it lasts!
-
Any of you lot out on Wednesday? Am planning to go do Narnia again. We walked down it on New Year's Day (was too hungover to ride) and it was total permafrost. Any takers?
-
Stanage trig to plantation back up to higgar, to burn west to classic burn to blakka
Any takers??
-
I can't play this week as I'll be in the Lakes with work.
Wrap up warm though, the car registered -7 at Burbage South this morning on the way to work :o
-
What's up with going out to the Peak FD?
-
start time... :'(
i'll be in touch..
-
sure. this was my idea not a Big Wednesday crew do. They are off in search of Toddy getting fit so big xc rides which doesn't float my, err, vanilla's ::) Start time is therefore negotiable + 1/2 hour for Jerry to turn up. :)
You got some lights yet Percy? I have a spare set you may be able to borrow if the wifey ain't out with them
-
hmmm tempting.
i'll see what i can do
I'm expecting total freeze.... exaclty how cold were you with Jerry last week??
how many layers??]
-
Yeap its going to be Very cold - apparently around minus 5 or lower - may need to develop a temporary fat cover!!!re
My main problem is start times due to work not being that flexible on a Wednesday.
-
I had three layers on top and wore a beanie and it was just ok tbh. I just didn't stop to wait for Jerry, or at least stopped him from taking a break when I did if you know what I mean ::)
-
You got some lights yet Percy? I have a spare set you may be able to borrow if the wifey ain't out with them
A kind offer, but unless you've got a set that work through closed eyes then they'll be no good for me. I seem to spend a lot of my downhill time with my eyes shut......
-
WTF ? That's what the climbs are for
-

in that case lights are of no use and you could come out in the dark?
I suspect you are making excuses young man
-
you can borrow mine. will take me like 30 seconds to fit on yr bike, and they're charged!!
coz I have the time in ride in the light today, I'm just off out.
sorry guys....but as I have the choice of french onion soup (mine.. the best incl balsamic and thyme reduction, topped with gruyere, sage and lardon stuffings balls) or Poulet au Pot (aka Henry the IVth chicken) with real homemade fauxmeat stuffing, belly of pork, fennel and leeks with a dijon mustard caper and cornichon dressing and an unforeseen gap in my day to get out and ride then I'm afraid that's it!!
-
No wonder you're so fat - all that food, anybody would think its Christmas again. :o
Looks like it needs to be a long ride to burn that lot off!!!!!
-
Usual time and place tomorrow night?
-
Not for me, training tomorrow (climbing). Out on Thursday night though if you are interested?
-
beautiful still conditions destined to change at night fall :-( dunno my start time, depends on fatkid.
Defo out though..
Got a little plan for a route ;-)
-
You want to be concentrating on d/h fatdoc, not xc. 20mins of descent in spain and you'll be whimpering with arm pump to rival a yorkshire 8a+ sport route
-

Can't wait!!! Good job I've upped my upper body training and bouldering.
It was a touch foggy this evening with visibility down to 10 yards on Houndkirk and around Burbage.
Popped into the Crown in Totley, after running into some deer on Blakka - the alcoholic landlord was suppose to do his last day today but didn't bother to turn up. Phil - the kid behind the bar - is trying to get the tenancy to become the landlord. It would appear him and his Dad are trying to sort the place out with the brewery that own it. Hopefully it stays open - but I doubt it will with the current downturn in the pub trade.

:agree:
A Cwmcarn session would get you in the zone for Spain - I know it's a DH track but it's easily all ridable on a shorter-travel bike, you'd just go marginally slower.
-
is this representative of what the course is like?
I'd be well happy on my Marin on that, looks awesome! NO doubt there is a lot of *the helmet cam makes it look far less steep*, but I'll defo going there for the uplift in the spring.. I'd prefer it to be a least vaguely dry!! The bottom section looks to have various lines, no obligatory doubles??
Where is the bit with the heinous double / step up that gracia bust his bike on? is it the bit before the tunnel?? If so looks avoidable ;D which is what I would intend.
I reckon TLR & Shorton would be up for a day there an all :) UKB big day away later on year?? All invited?
I'm in.
-
I'm v keen.
That looks like it might be fun on my hardtail too...
-
Cool,
look at THIS
www.switch-backs.com/mountain-bike-videos-films-movies-youtube-freeride-spain.html (http://www.switch-backs.com/mountain-bike-videos-films-movies-youtube-freeride-spain.html)
short one v v good, still viewing the long one..
-
is this representative of what the course is like?
Yes - they are doing the black start which is the best one imo.
The cam does make it look a lot less steep but gives a pretty good idea. It's nowhere near as steep as Caersws and the top section contours back and forth across the hill which gives moderately steep straight sections joined by steep bermed corners.
Where is the bit with the heinous double / step up that gracia bust his bike on? is it the bit before the tunnel?? If so looks avoidable ;D which is what I would intend.
That's the Quarry Jump. At exactly 56 seconds on the vid you see the rider going just to the left of a small slab of rock and then down a gully beneath it. The Quarry Jump launches off that small slab of rock and crosses the gully landing slightly hipped beyond it. You'd have to be going *very* fast to clear it and you wouldn't want to crash!
At 1:56 the rider diverts off the right - this is a fun bit of quick singletrack through the trees but is off the main descent (you can see the main track down to his left) and not as quick overall.
The lower half of the track (from 2:46) is totally different in character - open, fast and with big (though optional) jumps. The bridge drop at 3:28 is one of the nicest things i've ridden - you just float down it, lovely!
That looks like it might be fun on my hardtail too...
I've followed a really good guy down on a hardtail - he was quick but it looked brutal. Not really a "fun" day out as such on a HT I wouldn't have said...
-
i suppose the bit i remember from that rowan sorrell movie was the bottom section, which looked nice and smooth. a bit like a bigger version of the end of the red route at ae.
well, the big bike needs dusting off anyhow!
-
cool!!
:great:
I'll be avoiding that quarry jump mind....
-
bubba - that final section, is it quite easy to push back up there, rather than rely on the uplift? just thinking that i might be able to get a couple of hours in on the way back from somewhere, and it would be nice to not to have to worry about booking the uplift.
had a look at some youtube footage of that jump. it looks nasty...
-
Yeah, you could easily push up the bottom section, or probably hike up a bit and then along the fireroad that crosses the track at the top of the lower section - you can see the little drop off the fireroad at 2:46.
Quarry jump doesn't look too bad on video but it belies the speed you'd need going in and how constricted and off-camber the landing zone is. I'm just a wuss I guess ;)

I'd definitely be up for a UKB uplift day
I'll have to reconstruct my retro steed and get riding more!
-
Fuck me.. Fbsfs 10 inch rig would not save me from that off camber hell. I'm taking the chicken run.
As the uplift looks pretty easy to book once a couple of months in advance post your availabilty here for let's say mid April onwards. I'll take 5 from sheff. If I end up booking this I expect money prior to booking.. Coz I've been arsed about before and I'm not the game of "I'll pay you on the day mate"
So, put your chips in. Let's play
-
weds? Huge front coming through....
If not total gale cons I'll probs be out, nothing spesh but I'll have a go I reckon
-
A Cwmcarn uplift would be good fun. I've done a day there before and its a nice course. All rollable, so anyone could get down it. I'll certainly come if I'm free.
Can't ride tomorrow as I'm away for meetings, and then off skiing for 2 weeks so no riding for me.
Picked up the Hemlock, its in amazing condition. Agreed a deal on some 32 Talas R which will do for now until I can actually ride the bike and see what forks it really needs....
-
Am going out tonight not tomorrow if anyone is interested?
tlr - do you want to borrow some 32 floats or vanilla to 'test' rather than buying some talas. Floats are in perfect condition, vanilla's less so ;) but you are welcome to try either.
-
punter circuit at works to get arm pump for me tonight... that and fitting some DH tyres and tubes (with an increase of some kilos in rolling mass to bike) to get ready for spain!!!
there again, better wait until after XC ride weds :P
-

Thanks a lot for the offer, but the deal is now done on the Talas R. Not sure the steerer on yours will be long enough anyway, ideally it needs to be 210mm.
I might well end up with some longer forks when I can bring myself to spend the money, but I'll see how 140mm feels to start with.
-
weds?
Finally, I wouldn't say no. Not sure that I'm on the most worthy of steeds but she labours a heavy frame along a daily commute and survives all the lumps and bumps in Sheffield's tarmac. Where and when?
-
details to follow, i'll speak to shorton &fatkid... 18:30 earliest time usually.. (often ends up at 19:00) at bottom of eccy woods, footpath that breaks ino the woods opposite first set of semis after pond after beauchief as riding out of town on abbeydale rd..
-
change of plan. am training tonight so will be out on the bike tomorrow. 18:30 eccy woods?
-
survives all the lumps and bumps
Typically the rear gears seem to be one out this morning on the way to work. I will try and get it fixed at lunchtime but I'm not sure if I've got all the right tools at work with me today. Don't hang around waiting for me, if I'm there, I'm there :(
-
slack rear mech cable?
just tighten with wind adjuster ( on gear changer housing, or sometimes nest to mech if it non shadow shimano..)
I'll be there at 18:30... probs go through my local woods to get there.
-
Sunday morning anyone? Txt me
-
Will actually be going out on my bike tomorrow night for the first time in ages. Anyone fancy it? 6.30 Eccy Woods
-
I'm off games - still.
-
Does this great event still take place or has it died? I have one more week of revision hell then I'm free all summer for some after work rides.
-
I'm still doing it. Often by way of van to ringinglow straight from work to get the footpaths in..
-
Keeps me away from the jay boy wanna be XCers, no competative shite
All welcome.. As always
-
You out tomorrow FD? I too have currently abandonned Big Wed crew but will be out tomorrow? Some of the trails over Rivelin way will be good at the mo?
-
Big g and I are thinkin about another van assisted foray out to the peak, need to sort work... May well be another 2 hours around burb, though I agree rivelin/ win hill / the beast excite me. I'll be back on here mid morning tomorrow
-
One more week of learning how to hug trees and then Wednesdays are free again!!!
Next Wednesday - anyone up for a ride and post exam beer??
BTW I've not ridden since my slight knee problem so I'm not that fit.
-
good, coz you are too fit on the road. :P
right lurvvers,
big G & moi are driving :o to the norfolk arms for 2 hrs of reps through the burbge valley... start time a bit dodgey, he's got to get here from chesser, and he's still at work :-\
-
Has this event - died a death?
I feel it needs re-starting, maybe in February when I escape from A&hEll & have retrieved my XC bike from FDs cellar - I'm hoping he hasn't sold it.
-
er..... :-[
well the forks are on mine, the frame's covered in mould and I've totalled your rear wheel.
weds are at the mo board training nite for me.. but in 3 months i'll b up for variety on my mid week fun night out ( and if I'm not careful hosting some serious finger injury preventing board madness)
I will not be easily sold on nights slopping about in the clart when i have a nice dry board with seriously handbag house and euro trance pouring out of my ipod.
-

Post and they will come... (actually that's a bit cheap as I've never managed to make one yet despite wanting to)
Would love to be available for a TWAWMTB (you can't abreviate abreviations surely?)RT(XCSS)
-
And posting asking for it to be re-started in about 3 months is rather optimistic, I don't know what I'm doing last tomorrow let alone yesterday.
-
and you have to come over to mine to bear with the trance and euro beats...
I got nu probs 4 you dude.. :bounce:
it WILL be worth the musical pain..

When exactly did this become the "boys with poor musical taste early 90's re-mix" thread? Dank cellers, Fatdoc, Charley, tops off for goalposts...

just the same old same old :dance1:
