anyone seen any good films recently?
September 21, 2004, 03:07:58 pm
i rented Passion of the christ and shaun of the dead t'other night. thought passion was a bit whack, started off well but got over the top way too quickly and lost anything good it had managed to get going. same with shaun in way as well actually. funny as fuck for the first 40-50 minutes then he has to kill his own mother :? but still a pretty good film.
anyone else seen 'em, if so wot did ya think?
any other good reccomendations?

Shaun is well worth a watch, if you liked it get hold of the Spaced DVDs (there are two series available) - understated; well written; postmodern comedy genius.

Went to see Collateral the other night, thought it was really cool, much more chilled out/less full-on action than I was expecting. I was very hung over so the chilled pace suited my head, some of the scenery shots of nocturnal LA are beautiful.

There have been a couple of quality films on TV recently and all - American History X the other week - I'd forgotten how good that film is. On the Ed Norton tip, Spike Lee's last film 25th Hour has him in it and it's worth a watch and all.

Oh, and obviously the Star Wars DVD boxed set is out soon...my wantometer is warming up already.

shizzle - need to and buy it. And a DVizzle player.

Just remembered all the tings I've seen in the last few months:

Bourne Supremacy - decent film , tho I'd recommend Bourne Identity first (and you get to see Nizzle Bentley on a stunt double tip)

Dawn of the Dead (new version) - very good and pretty genuinely worrying...I came back into my flat after seeing it, flicked the light on and shat myself - the 'zombie' in my hall was a hoodie on the back of a door and my bouldering mat

Just downloading Shaun OTD now - looks fun.

I thought I-robot was mediocre apart from the snazzy effects - gratuitious product placement too.

Watched The Station Agent t'other night - good film in a girly heartwarming way.

Star Wars box set is out - snorting geeks everywhere can masturbate to the dated effects and wooden acting. Ho hum, you can guess I'm not a fan

Saw Mystic River a couple of weeks back too. Good acting and atmosphere marred by a bizarrely unbelievable plot. I thought Dogville was good too.

Got Grosse Point Blank ready for a rewatch - well funny if you've never seen it, and also got Barry Lyndon, a less famous Kubrick film to watch too.

I liked 'I, Robot' - I thought it was a good sci-fi thriller and managed to pack a lot in - plenty of sci-fi stuff, some good action, a little thinking, and a reasonable detective story. Kept me entertained the whole way despite the science bird being weak.

Then again I am a sucker for sci-fi.

Clockwork O is awesome.

I wouldn't have minded if I Robot actually had any even halfway believable science in it apart from vague crap about "the ghost in the machine" as a rather crap explanation for robots losing it. Another Will Smith vehicle but nowhere near as good as Men in Black.

Has anyone read the Asminov book? I've not, just wondering how the two compare.

thats an over view of If... i would put it in the same league as c.o although its a lot slower paced and a lot more surreal.

Get:

City of God - an epic Brazilian 'Goodfellas' style historical breakdown of the emergence of modern gangster culture in the slum districts. Just an amazing piece of cinema; easily one of the best films I have ever seen, for many different reasons.

On a more trad tip, I would suggest Far from Heaven.

I really enjoyed Lost in Translation, although I've heard various dullards (including my childhood hero, Paul Wellar) slag it, because 'nothing happens'

That skate film, Dogtown and the Z Boys is also worth seeking out. I kept thinking about parallels with the bouldering scene's recent shift from  under-to-overground.

I agree, Dogtown is a great documentary, even if you've never skated/surfed. Well worth a watch.

Had all original star wars on DVD for a while now (original laser disc rips not remastered) - superb but I won't be going out buying the re-releases
Cannonball run - what a film
Shaun of the dead - very funny

Saw High Fidelity the other night.  Loved the book & thought the film was ok for an american interpretation (though wasn't nick hornby the non-executive producer?)

Also saw Secretary.  Very strange pace to the movie.  Enjoyable.

One of my old bosses went  home drunk one night, spotted an 'intruder' and shot 3 holes in it before realising it was a trenchcoat hanging on his door.

Needless to say he now locks his guns away..

Dawn of the Dead kicked ass.

Saw Army of Darkness recently too - brilliant.

got all three sat in my DVD collection at home - 2 and 3 are ok but not a patch on the first - which is by far the best film to come out of HK for donkeys years

I just finished watching it this morning, really interesting, got it out the local library. Taped Jacob's Ladder on telly the other night and watched it again; still haven't got a fucking clue about the ending though. Any suggestions?
