a few foreign films worth checking out:

Battle Royale - quality japanese wierdness
Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman (2003 version) - what Tarantino must have got alot of his Kill Bill inspiration from
Run Lola Run - very good german flick
Hero - more crouching tiger style fun, beautiful cinematography too

How about Shawn of the Dead?  Saw that last night (only just come out in Yank land).  It was ace!  But then I loved Spaced as well.  Pretty similar feel.

Are Batal Royale and Battle Royale the same thing? School Gangs thing?

Thought Run Lola Run was OK, one of the oddities in Rich Hanson's collection.

Hero is only just being released in the UK.

I almost got Shaun of the Dead last night, but opted for Mystic River instead. Thought it was an excellent intense film.

Saw Fahrenheit 9/11 last night - what a load of shite...

I always though Michael Moore was inclined towards taking cheap shots, but this really was ridiculous.

2 hours of my life that I'll never get back.

Ichi the Killer is by Takeshi Miike who's done lots of phenomenally unpleasant but very stylish films (Audition is probably his least sanest effort - just moderate amounts of mutilation and torture).

Zatoichi The Blind Swordsman is the latest  'beat" Takeshi  Kitano film - though its nothing  really like his best stuff  -which are really elegaic yakuza films like Sonatine and Hana Bi  (probably an acquired taste - really "still" passages with lovely photography etc interspersed with sudden violence).  Tarantino is a big fan - organised the distribution of Sonatine in the USA.

Anyone who liked City of God might like Carandiru too - its set in a brazilian jail  - funny and tragic (Porridge.. brazilian flava...  shamone). ]

one last urgent warning...on no account see Battle Royale 2 :  possibly the very worst film I have ever seen .  Loads of half arsed and frankly bollox political commentary and not enough funny fatalities... a complete waste of a blank DVD....

Battle Royale is quality, haven't seen BR2, and probably won't. Original version of 'The Ring' is scary japanese weirdness and better than the remake (which was also good).

Caught 'La Haine' (10th anniversary release) in Manc Corner House on Sat. Awesome film, still really current a decade after release.

'Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai' is a intelligent Leon-esque hitman film. One of my fave DVD's.

City of God-Quality,  Y tu mamá también  (your mama, the tambourine  :D )-quality with tits,

Ummm...

'My Cousin Vinny' on the other night....Classic.

Unfortunately I think this only means "And your mother too" or something equally as exciting...

The japanese Ring is quality - though it might be best to avoid doing what I did and fall asleep  immediately afterwards - I woke up  at 4am with a sense of abject terror and my snowstorm/static covered tv right next to my bed ... nearly shat myself (if you've seen the film you'll feel my pain).

Ring 2 - a bit of a disapointment , repeatedly features this test for psychic shit that comprises looking at how fast  water soakings into tissues....  makes it look like some kind of scary sanitary towel advert...

One film that we're forgetting though:  Cliffhanger - Sly's climbing style taught me everything I know  (and reassured me that  losing my legs would not make climbing any more difficult).

cheers moose - will check that one out then

have to agree with the BR2 statements - it really is the biggest steaming pile of crap ever made

watched Police Story 1 & 2 for the first time the other night - now there's a couple of quality films (the out takes at the end are the highlight - i'd love to know the full number of hospitalisations whilst filming..........)

love the out take in PS1 where he runs out in front of his mate driving the bedford rascal van thing, but the guy is driving way, way too fast - locks up, smacks Jackie side on at about 30mph, Jackie (still running) bounces about 20 feet forward and carries on running without breaking his stride. What a pro.

Apparently the makers of Dogtown and Z Boys are making a new film called "Chasing Giants" about the history of big wave surfing taking in 3 eras; North Shore Hawaii in the 70s, Northern California in the 80s and Jaws, current day.

This combined with the Billabong Odyssey thing going about at the moment means surfing is back on the Big Screen again.

Saw 'Dead Mans Shoes' on Friday.

A breathtakingly good film.

Highly recommended.

As a bonus, mainly filmed in Matlock and the Peak, so you get to 'spot the track' (muddy not music)

Shame, quite liked Matlock, won't be returning now I've seen the film...  :D

...but how will I get to Blackrocks now...???

Watched Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind:

http://www.eternalsunshine.com/

More stunning writing from Charlie Kaufman, with the two main actors playing against there normal schtick. This just a stunning film, if a little complex in structure at one point. Described as a comedy, I actually found it deeply moving. But these days I'll cry at anything.
