Which is the healthiest takeaway?
November 14, 2009, 08:29:45 am
Ok sorry - this is not about which is the best curry house in the North of England..

As you are probably aware, it is the law in the UK to have a take away on a Friday or Saturday night.
I had to work last night so tonight is the night for me, but which one is the healthiest?

-Curry
-Fish & chips
-Pizza
-Chinese
-McDonalds
-KFC

Disclaimer: no pansy options like salad etc are allowed :)

The thought behind this is that there is a poster in my local chippy that says fish & chips are good for you - is this bollocks? (obviously they are not going to have a poster saying they are bad for you, but I've not seen anything similar in KFC for example)

Shit - I've probably put this in the wrong forum, maybe it should be in diet, training and injuries?
Sorry..

Out of that list I'd say Pizza is probably the best.

I've seen the chippy poster - it's basically saying that fish is good for you, which I would agree with. The problem is the large amount of saturated fat it's all cooked in. That said, fish and chips from Darnall Fisheries is very tempting if I'm ever heading back from that side of town.

There's no reason why curries couldn't be healthy - it's perfectly possible to cook your own that aren't smothered in grease like most takeaways are.

I've yet to find a Chinese takeaway that doesn't just sell generic tasting food with too much salt and MSG.

Nope, it should be in "food & drink" :)

Really? feck - I was under the belief that cheese was the satan of the food world?

I agree with you on the curry front, it was actually what I thought would be the best - a basic dish would mainly be chicken and rice with sauce...

Thanks for moving the topic :)

its going to depend largely on what you order and how much of it more than where.

Also depends if by healthy you just mean low in fat, or are we considering shit like excess salt, colourings, msg, additives, preservatives, mechanically recovered meat, intensively farmed chicken etc?

I know it is a bit of a vague question as there are many options to choose from.

Ok, so to narrow it down a bit - here are probably what I would choose from each eatery:

curry - chicken tikka masala + pilau rice
fish & chips - fish & chips
pizza - meat feast type thing - thick crust
chinese - sweet & sour chicken, egg fried rice
mcdonalds - big mac meal
KFC - tower chicken burger meal thing

And in healthy I mean fat/calories rather than additives/food origins etc

Cheers

My binge eating usually involves a bucket of KFC and I'm still alive

Do you have the fries as well, or just the chicken?

A Big Mac is 490 calories, and medium fries are 330.

They do a full breakdown of all their products here

To be fair on McDonalds, it's never going to be health food but they are trying to clean up their act regarding fat/salt/sugar content and where they source their food from.

KFC have a table of nutritional information here

Personally I wouldn't find a Big Mac a satisfactory evening meal but then that's probably why I'm a fat bastard.

Nice one - cheers Bubba. I should have realised that the Big chains would list their nutritional info. Guess I will have to be sad and draw up a spreadsheet, god I need to get out more...

From just looking very quickly at those two, KFC is looking pretty bad to be honest. lagerstarfish - I wouldn't advise looking at the calories for their recipe chicken :)

I agree though, a big mac meal does not fill you up.

Interestingly enough, they have just said on BBC breakfast that the total daily calorific intake guidelines should be increased by 16% :) GET IN!

Had I not shut off that particular fucked up female bit of my brain some time ago I could probably tell you exactly what is best, and probably how many calories, fat and salt is in each, as it is I can't be arsed.  Women's magazines are always doing articles on what to order from a takeaway that is most healthy, so you can stay slim and not appear like a calorie counting maniac to the boy you are trying to impress at the time.  :-*

Anyway, from what I can dredge up from memory I know that KFC tower style burgers have something like a weeks worth of fat and salt in them so should be avoided, McD's isn't great and won't fill you up, even their 'healthy' options aren't that healthy.  Pizza is OK depending on toppings and crusts, thick is bad, loads of cheese is not good, veggie stuff tends to be better.  Chinese can be alright if you go for a light sauce with lots of veg and only eat a very small amount of boiled rice or noodles.  Indian stuff avoid creamy dishes, have minimal rice and bread.  Fish and chips, don't eat the chips and peel the batter off the fish.

Basically, none of it's really 'good' for you unless you only eat parts and miss out on all the good shit.  The sensible option?  Pick what you fancy most, eat until you're full but not stuffed and then go for an extra  run on Sunday or Monday if you're worried about the effects on your health.  ;)

I had a f*cking enormous kebab and chips liberally smothered in chilli sauce and yoghurt about two weeks ago washed down with two jumbo cans of Stella straight from the tin. Burped and belched all the way through it and even let the dogs eat the bits dropped on the floor as I shovelled it into my mouth whilst watching footy on the tele...  ;D

I'm normally a healthy living chap but when you feel the need for that kind of thing there's no point fannying around.

Agreed but now I feel like a disgusting vortex of jizz. I eat a 14 inch dominos  pizza before going to town last night then at 6am sat outside the steps of mcdonalds and nailed the best part of four double cheeseburgers. Not my usual flavour at all. Was raised a vegetarian until 20 and want to go back.

Thanks magpie - most of that makes sense, apart from:

Fish and chips, don't eat the chips and peel the batter off the fish.
Sacrilege, I tell thee  :spank:  ;D

Yup - or lamb..

Saw a program about this c.10 years ago, and shish kebab was considered the best of the bunch. Its the sugar in the drinks, fat and salt in the fries and the re-constituted lips and arseholes in doner kebabs...

Theo's in Leeds (long since gone) used to do a great falafel kebab... for the non meat eaters...

Pizza cant be great. All that lard in the cheese. Not to mention the usual meddely of dead pig products piled on top.
