Magpie Cycle Ride Of Death survival poll.
April 11, 2009, 09:21:22 pm
I have been chatting to Ms 'pie about her cycle ride next week and apparently she's a bit nervous about her chances of survival and the probability of DEATH due to exhaustion (or getting eaten by wild bears). So I thought what better way to celebrate this than post a topic where her UKB fan club can speculate - and even wager if you like - on how long she'll last.

Some information:

Cycle schedule is as follows:

Mon 13 April      Inverness - Carrbridge                 30 miles
Tue 14 April       Carrbridge - Newtonmore            30 miles
Wed 15 April    Newtonmore - Calvine                 30 miles
Thu 16 April       Calvine - Kenmore                      34 miles
Fri 17 April        Kenmore - Callander                   41 miles
Sat 18 April       Callander - Glasgow                   53 miles

Cycle elevation is as follows:

http://www.cycle-n-sleep.co.uk/elevation/elevinverness.htm - note that she only goes to Glasgow (well if she makes it hehe).

Magpie twit feed so you can read her last words:

http://twitter.com/MsMPie

I think that covers it...

Don't think that just because I am in the arse end of nowhere that I am not still stalking you all online watching everything.  :spank:

I'm not dead yet, but I only cycled from the flat to the station this morning.  I have however had the best day ever today going on a boat trip at John O Groats, so if I die in the next week, I'll die happy, it was a 'pretty much exclusively for Magpie' kind of boat trip.

Death cycle starts Monday, watch this space... or maybe Twitter cause I have worked out how to update it form my phone.  8)

Good luck with it, boat trip sounds very nice.  A bit of PSYK and you'll be fine, just remember to dry your shorts properly.

Some very optimistic votes so far!!

Myself, I am torn between:

Death on Monday night - I figure the first big climb out of Inverness will be survivable (cos she's fresh) as would, in theory, some of the later hills (cos she's be warmed up to the riding schedule by then). But I reckon the climb to the Slochd summit tonight (at a guess) - she'll be exhausted from the shock of the first day, and that extra hill will be too much.

Or:

Death on Saturday - Although flat, the longest day, and right at the end. Early on Saturday morning, in theory the last day, but with everything unbearably aching from the previous 5 days, and a demoralising 50 miles to go, I can see the potential for cycling a few miles and just collapsing in a sobbing heap of death.

thinks this may be her first and final cycle day, seriously we've run out of food and water and were in the middle of nowhere!

I reckon she'll battle on though :)

A poll without croissants is a poll without dignity.

Is she still going?

(Note to all: no information on saddle soreness is desired or required - thanks)

I hear reports from RedTips that Magpie's got a really sore ass, but it's not from the cycling.

FFS you people are demanding, isn't a Pain Au Chocolate good enough for you?? It's pretty much a chocolate croissant anyway.

I just waiting for regular twitter updates about "minge mold"...

Already too much information.

What with this and the lycra spotting photos, this is not turning into a relaxing evening.

PS Don't start on the chocolate croissants - I have some standards, somewhere.

has taken drugs and applied special lotions, now for bed. XXX

There's dedication, already taken enough punishment to be tender in the situpon, but battles through by using creams ready for the next session.

Second day is always the worse - I am voting for Tuesday.

If she makes it past Wednesday, I reckon we are in for the long haul.

Weather forecast anyone?

Good point, an important factor to consider. In approx travel order:

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/he/aviemore_forecast_wind.html

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ta/finnart_forecast_wind.html

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/st/greenock_forecast_wind.html

Disappointingly settled and the wind is in a favourable direction although the cooler north easterlys could bring into play Death By Freezing (assuming she survives mini-horse encounters etc etc).

Tuesday you say, hmmm, I ended up voting for Sat but I wish I could retract that. Looking at the elevation, there's some serious hillage around Wednesday and I think that might be the optimum exhaustion point....

I am usually not a  purveyor of waddage, but if Mags gets to the weekend then I will dish out a Wad point, purely for entertainment provided along the way!

Oh god. This is so hard.
Im in agony, my knees are killing me, its only the second night and im going to have to bust out the 30mg codeine tonight just so i can sleep.
There are awful death hills tomorrow, so those who haven't voted yet, i reckon wednesday is a safe bet.
Oh and massive thanks to those who advised me to buy the special cream and 2 sorts of padding, they have, quite literally, saved my ass.
Im going to bed now, in the hope that 14 hours sleep turns me into chris hoy.

When you hit the hills tomorrow and it feels hard then think of us and the waddage you will receive in completion and the ribbing you will receive on failure.
