Mantel Dips/ reverse pull up things
January 19, 2009, 09:50:09 am
The title doesn't make sense but I've decided start training to mantel (without elbow & feet use) a pull up bar from a hang.
Has anyone else done much of this, know if its easy to get any injuries from?

I'm going to train without the swing. I will call them mantel pull ups as 'muscle up' is pretty camp. Not just camp, its cliff richard camp!

call it what you will.

I'm not sure how much benefit you'll get from doing them on a bar though. Why not just do dips if you have weak triceps?

I never perform dips when toping out in that scenario so the full 'pull through' if you like seems more sensible.
If i can adapt bar to having a flat ledge i will.

you do that then, maybe even make yourself a slab board while you're at it?

I never do front levers when out bouldering they do however seem to make a difference on steep stuff, go figure?

The tricky part of that bar exercise will be the pull up. Do some dips as they make you stronger.

Nope, i'm right.  A footless mantel won't be helped by dips over that exercise.
Maybe it will if i train some parrots to sit on my shoulders and flap me into position it might???

You're all wrong.

The exercise you should be concentrating on is the Tabletop Mantle-Up Planche-Fest. Start by sitting on the floor with your legs out straight under the table and your nose/forehead/chin touching the edge of the table top (depending on the size of you and your table). Place both palms on the table top, lift your arse and legs off the floor (legs still out straight) and then slowly press down until your knees are touching the underside of the table. Then tip your upper body forward and straighten your arms until fully locked. Lift your legs out behind you and crank out a smooth planche press up. When you have this wired, try to go into a full handstand at the end.

A pint for the first person to post a vid of them doing this.

Have a think, how many people have gone before you? if your name isn't "Back 2 Dan" then someone has trained what you're lacking before.

Muscle ups on a bar are a piece of piss, they're just not that hard, kids do them in the playground FFS.

Dips you will struggle on.

Weighted dips you will struggle on.

One armed dips you will struggle on.

muscle ups on rings you will STRUGGLE ON.

Get where this is going?

Feel free to do whatever you wish and call them "mantle pull ups uber wad builder 3.0" if you so wish. I'll stick to doing more productive things.
 :wall:

(or if your name is stevie and you're also 52 years of age, just go and do about a 1000 pull ups a day between doing chores, that should get you up 8c+)

I am reminded of the time I approached the dip bars with Jasper. He might have strong fingers and steely-gay-robot-lock-off strength, but he demonstrated a whole new exercise which is best desciribed as The Crumple And Fold when he went up to the dip bars. He could only climb about 7b then. Now that he can actually do a Diptm, he is cranking out 7c/8a on plastic.

I'd produce some video evidence but why should I? Where's the trust nowadays?

One armed dips you will struggle on.

I had to eat my hat on this.  :-[ I tried them out the other night after a long session and managed several with a swing and a couple with no swing and slow. So if fresh they would be even more pissy.

One arm dips are more awkward than a struggle. I did two this morning on the newel post on my landing, but the crushing of my balls seems to be stopping me.

I take it a waist high bar is best way to train this???

am i being dense but you're asking about dips and then saying you can do 2 one-handed ones. i don't think you need stronger triceps you must just be very very shit at mantleing, i'm really confused

No, i was initially interested in what injuries you could get from too many 'muscle ups' (still sounds homo to me).

This was to train for footless mantelling. Dips were suggested instead. I thought that muscle ups would train the move from the hang to the mantel (if that makes sense?) but others suggested sticking to dips.

Anyway tuesday night i did a session inc campus boarding. Following that i managed 7 muscle ups with a bit of leg swing, and 2 that had no leg swinging and much slower movement.

This morning i tried one arm dips and crushed my bollocks after the second one. Normal dips i'm fine with and can do plenty of them

Still confused?

I have limited experience with mantels and a lot of experience with muscle ups  8) but I have never come across a mantel problem where anything more than basic dip strength is necessary. Usually its more a case of getting your hips high through use of heels and/or good finger strength to pull higher gaining some balance turning one hand round and doing an easy press move to get a foot on. If you have a boulder problem where a muscle up  is possible I am sure you could do it more economically with a heel hook and a press. Though I could be doing what all the strong fingered 8 stone midgets do when down grading and not taking into account my strengths.
