My absolute one time, all-star classic hate. People rubbishing venues where they have either a) not been to  b)not been to as others rubbish it, and fear a lack of cred if they subvert this norm. Like really, that probably is the only thing that makes me boil a little inside.

(See recent Angel Bay thread all you nay sayers!  ;) )

Apologies if that has been misconstrued Dense. I'm going on a general vibe of nay-saying on the Bay and countless other venues. It's common currency now to diss unvisited venues. I overhear people at climbing walls doing it all the time.

Tickmarking fuckers who never brush that shit off and people who seem incapable of brushing holds.  :furious:

things the mildly irritate me:
  • people who say "traverse" instead of "traverse"

I always thought "traverse" was the noun and "traverse" was the verb?

(wad points for Goldmember reference)

I was training at the wall last night, before a comp (I don't climb indoor comps as a matter of principle) and I started trying some of the (hard) comp lines. I did OK on them. When the comp started I carried on training and working the lines (the comp format was quite free form, I knew everyone and no-one minded me climbing with them), but what annoyed me was the blatant cheating by the people I didn't know.

While some problems may not have been impeccably marked, things like using off-route footholds for starts and blatant dabs were so common it was infuriating. I didn't call anyone on it, because it wasn't my place, but it further reinforced my feeling that comps are crap.

That, and downgrading for the sake of downgrading.

Bonjoy, what's the hold on Subculture you're not supposed to use these days?

I briefly tried the sequence without this blatantly online hold, it felt contrived in the extreme. Some cheesewhip fails to see a hold and trys to drag everyone down to his myopic level :wall:

People (kids most likely) who scratch their names, or "Kev 4 Suzy" with lumps of rock at the beginning of routes. Grrrrr.... it gets me so angry e.g. start of Green Death recently.  :furious:

Pigeon holing, and people who can't help but oppress their points of view onto others whilst holding a holier than thou stance.
Yeah those pigeon holers are the bad shit. Still, at least you aren't harried by the evil crow holers, those guys are black juju!

I, and almost everyone I know who's done Subculture used the undercut out left and it felt 8a to me. The hold isn't used by any other route, so how can it be off-line????

Snowdon bound hillwalkers parking their cars in the Llanberis Pass all day. They drive up to Pen y Pass, find it's full (what a surprise) then drive back down the Pass and take the first parking space they see (usually the Cromlech lay by). Then they catch the bus back up to Pen y Pass again. Why they don't use the massive car park in Nant Peris and catch the same bus up the valley and leave the laybys for the climbers who actually want to be in the Pass?!!

Fuckin' right on.  You can add to that people who park without consideration in the various laybys. Either sticking their Audi TT's or 4x4 Volvos diagonally across the spaces or parking with about 3 yards gap between each car, thus reducing the number of potential car spaces by about a third.

I used to move blocks in front of the Hardcore Wall parking space at the Roadside Face as to guarrantee scratched fairings/dents on all the fuckers who park there.   Headlamps/radio ariels next.

And another thing.  This one's going out to the old patronising cunt who in 1999 had the balls to say "This ain't the climbing wall, Sonny..."   After I abbed off the top of Weasles Rip My Flesh having climbed it well.  A route he couldn't aspire to in his wildest dreams.  You know who you are!  Fuck You!

1) People who hog the warm up routes and when you ask, politely if you can 'nip up' to get warmed  up brush you off  >:(

2) When you see someone using an obviously duff sequence when working a route and you offer a bit of friendly advice, just ignore you. Ignorant twats.

3) Punters walking below you and asking banal questions like "How do you get the rope up there?"....

So where is the supposedly 'out of bounds' undercut on Subculture? On the bottom crux section? Sorry for my vagueness, it's about 15 years since I did it. I remember some big locky moves, then a slight shuffle left, then back right, and then straight up - does that sound about right?

(I'm voting 8a by the way)

It's where you go left after the 3rd clip, past the pocket and gaston-undercut thingy. There's two you can use and the one furthest left is quite good. Then you (or rather I) moved back right to the crimp and rock into the good undercut. Deffo 8a IMHO

  • people who leave tickmarks all over stuff, and tickmarking holds that aren't even blind

TOO RIGHT!!
Bouldered at Rubicon last night.  Whoever put those tick mark on Caviar in the last two days should be ashamed!  Every single freakin' foot hold and anything vaguely resembling a foothold and most of the hand holds marked with massive ticks.  Even the two starting foot holds!!  I don't have a problem with tickmarks just clean the beggers off afterwards and don't got OTT. PLEASE!!

Rant over.

My main annoyances are people who take themselves too seriously and people who seem to think that they are a better person than you because they climb harder  ::)

Leaving litter and chipping/overbrushing would be next on the list.

EDIT - actually, chipping would be top of the list really.

Disregard to others who share the crag environment pretty much covers it for me.  The most generally important examples being people who leave litter, and those who seem hell-bent on fucking-up sensitive access arrangements by using paths / private roads / parking spots in a selfish or forbidden manner just to save a few seconds of their oh-so-important time.

Top prize for irritation though goes to people who don't clean their rock shoes before climbing a route.  Nothing reduces me to a quivering state of mealy-mouthed resentment quite like some spanner caking a climb in filth.  And is it just me or are older climbers more prone to this?  The biggest culprits always seem to be old fellas with beards, generally wearing those enormous looking turquoise ankle boots (or perhaps it's just me... and I'm being stalked).  I suspect the difference in attitude is something to do with hard / project-orientated bouldering being more prevalent amongst younger climbers.  If you are used to attempting stuff at your limit, where a lack of dirt is utterly essential, rock-shoe hygiene becomes a necessary habit.

Although this attitude to preparation has probably lead to my other pet hate... brushing.  No! The holds are not dirty and do not need any more erroding thank you.  The problem is that you are going it wrong / are too tired / are too weak...

I was once trying Carpe Diem at Stanage and got a load of grief from a passerby. I had climbed up, placed and clipped all the gear below the crux, but decided to climb down for a rest before I went for it. I didn't weight any gear and I didn't lower off. I was just sat there composing myself, when this bloke turns up and starts slagging me off in a loud voice to his mate: "look at this cheating bastard, etc"

He disappeared sharpish, but my blood was already boiling with rage, and then the sun came out and it got too hot for the crux moves. I packed up and went to the pub: Fuck Stanage, shit crag, full of tossers.
