Just been down the Edge for the first time in about 3 years or something.

I thought the problems were pretty good, and thought the grades seemed ok really....well, I thought they were quite stiff, but I've been doing routes for ages so i would do. Didn't think they were 2 grades out though.

Percy's grading is pure comedy. Usually he tends to stick to one grade and apply it to everything. Thus we've had the V6 era where the average problem felt piss, and the V3 era where most thing felt nails....all adds to the fun....although I don't look at the grades.

agree wi fiend, in my very limited knowledge of climbin walls i have found that lookin at the grades bears no resemblance to what you're tryin to climb

Matt Smythe was a self-styled "training guru" who was around in the early 90's. He wrote articles for OTE, etc and spent more time training than actually doing any proper climbing, occasionally emerging from his cellar to stagger pale and bleary eyed to a sport crag, tick a hardish route and disappear. He burnt out quite quickly and faded from the scene.

did matt ever do anything really hard then?
is he still around today?
and wot does burning out really mean? where people lose motivation or just get injured and generally fucked and then give up?

my recollection was that he'd train for months on his board.then emerge to try his project.fail, then repeat the process giving up completely inthe end.
there was a picture of him recently as a guest at greshem's wedding.he appeared to have gained a bit of weight.
i think he was from up your way fingers kendal or there abouts.

Webbo's recollections match mine. I remember him being a fairly average climber before the big training binge. Saw him turn up at kilnsey once on a once yearly climb outdoors. Tried to onsight a 7c failed, put some bolts in a project that he never went on and then went back indoors. Wasn't he involved in managing Coffee Revolution on Eccy road for a bit and got married to Dellith Goodey(rabid bunny boiling man hater) and had a sprog.

are you doing geography as one of your a levels.

because kilnsey is not that near to sheffield, its probably quicker to get to from where you are now.

Very short and steep, very few holds 8c at least, doesn't look great hence the lack of attempts.

matt smythe smith was the original useless training guru.

He kept endless books of performance records over years, analysing the effects of different activities on his abilities. One was sparked off after he heard that US sprinters often masturbated before an event. So followed a lengthy masturbation analysis programme.

His training targets became ever further apart as he probably cottoned on to the fact he couldn't climb, and he would sell his kit to fund performance enhancers - first his trad rack, then his harness and rope, and finally, in an inspired nod towards reality, his boots and chalk bag.

Eventually started off Coffee Revolution, expanding it into 3 stores. Sold that, then got into creating a successful SMS service. Sold that, then created a website for selling houses.

All were successful, made a lot of money. Last seen almost a year ago at Almscliffe with wife, baby and a great big belly - not a Stuart Cameron belly by any means, but a belly. And pleased to report - for someone who has given up climbing, he seemed very happy.
