Popcorn Party, Ysgo
January 29, 2013, 06:14:16 pm
Hello,
Just wanting to clarify a few things if that's ok... We were trying this at the weekend and in the Black Wales Guide it has V7 from the sit (describes starting from horizontal rail - that's almost hidden) and V5 from a stand.. We were starting it like this

But seen a vid or two where they start it on the popcorn holds in a kind of semi sit.. Eg in this vid..

I couldn't do it, but it felt on the money starting on the low rail.. Nai and James got it done though..

And your point is?

I thought the question was obvious - so to spell it out.. any local beta about whether our lie down start is the correct harder way - or whether the way its done in the vid is the 7A..?

Didn't realise it was given V7 from the rail, thought it was V6.
The rail start is more of a lie-down so maybe the sit start's become the norm now and the grade's dropped to reflect it?  :doubt:  etc

I think the tide can wash the rocks in and out of the bottom making the sitter from the low slots more or less impossible. That is the proper low start though.

That makes sense, as does this:

V6 from the rail & V5 from the higher sit position probably about right. Rubbish vid of the low start

Agree. Thought (though I didn't tick it myself) that getting off the low break and established on the face was the crux.

I was about to say that when I did it the blocks were really high and you couldn't get to the break (where Ian starts from), but just found a picture from that day, and it would appear I started where Ian looks like he's about to start from at 10seconds, before he goes to the break underneath. Seem to recall that starting any lower involves loads of dabbing, although I've already just proven how useless my memory is. Wouldn't be the first time I started a problem at Porth Ysgo too high though.

We should have a day there again - bring some free paranoias and a cordless pad.

We're going to the Llyn en famille at Easter.

Is it worth going at all with just one pad and no spotters ?
Sorry I know this should probably be in a different thread

No spotters is ok on some stuff, but I think you'd need 2 pads.. One small (gap filler) and one large (on top) would be ok for some stuff..

I spend a lot of time down the Lleyn with my family and regularly nip off for a lone Ysgo session. I guess it helps that I know the crag really well but you'll be fine on your own. There's plenty of good low ball problems in Area 2, some of which are out of the sun (it can get very hot down there).

Things like this:

http://www.northwalesbouldering.com/newsitem.asp?nsid=467

If that doesn't float your boat just go on a mid grade classic ticking mission.

An extra spot pad is useful and no real extra hassle to carry.

If you go at easter you'll probably bump into other teams. Mick Lovatt is often there and will take great delight in showing you round/burning you off.  ;D

Beware they don't drop them in the slots between the boulders - they'll be gone forever. If you are selective there is loads of stuff that's safe enough, just don't expect Stanage landings.

Watch out for those big cobbles too.. I managed to roll a football sized one onto my ankle on Sunday.. (Underneath Jawbreaker...) and probably lucky not to have broken or sprained it. It is a great place though..
