Apologies if you've had to work, but what a superb snowy day. Bike ride up onto Houndkirk in a blizzard, saw cross country skiers, sledge being towed behind a car, snowboarders and pretty much had the moor to myself. ;D
Anyone else been having fun?

Did you manage to ride over Houndkirk John ? - or is there too much snow there ?
-
I've been out along the porter mit kamera, and pulling a toddler around on a sledge.
Saw plenty of boards on the hill by forge dam, and even a couple of homs on a nordic biathlon scene only without the guns.
-
just found out my school is closed again tomorrow, John , good job I've got loads of marking and planning to do !! If I didn't have a cold I'd be out there with you mate. Cheered myself up by checking out next years tour de france stages and dreaming of fields of sunflowers and alpine vistas

Yes, it wasn't to bad because of, and I can't believe I'm saying this, the 4x4's. Nice tracks to follow but it was feckin' baltic! Blackamoor was highly amusing, managed to get down Devils Elbow Gate without killing myself, so all good

Had snow here every day now since Thursday. Got out on the weekend and took some pics and played with the wee 'un on the sledge on Sat, but Sunday was howling winds and not pleasant. Otherwise been at work, as per usual :( Dumped it down good today again, and forecast to do so again tomorrow. Not lying deep here on the coast, but apparently piling up just a few miles inland apparently ski areas are getting hammered and roads are needing constant ploughing.. Got snow tyres fitted on Saturday hope I haven't cursed it.
-
Top day, drove the 4x4 up the footpath to Stanage and managed to get some decent bolt belays in situ so we could top rope some good mixed routes.
Nightmare slab went quite easily but Silk was much more problematic.
The only slight difficulties where wen we got a pair of ring ouzels in the air intake and ran over the Chairman of the local RSPB.

Winter tyres...?
Got ours fitted on Saturday. the difference is unbelievable. I took a scenic route to work, avoiding the congested main roads and get some pics, great fun!!
felt like Norwegian stage of WRC (in my head anyway).

Ordered them on Kwik Fit online (cheaper than in local kwik fit) and went in at prebooked time and got them fitted - took about an hour got all 4 done as only having front two done reduces stopping power apparently. I think they are firestones, cost £280 fitted. It's a Focus Estate, may be more depending on tyre size.

In a 30 min walk around the block - I helped push 4 cars and one van out of parking spaces/over speed bumps... Often it just takes a little push and they're away.
Of course it does help that I'm in Hull and the steepest gradient within 5 miles is a bridge... ;D

That's a good idea really....just store the old tyres till spring. Aye think I might do that myself....

Never seen anything like this and it's coming down heavily again now.
Fuck it, I brought enough work home on Monday pm to last me til Friday and if I can't get the car off the road by then, I shall not be attempting the bus / train. Worth losing a day's money to sit here in the warm! ;D
Took Raf for a walk up to Graves Park earlier and there was plenty of snowboard / sledge action going on. He was happy trying to throw snowballs at me and falling over a lot.
-
I know we are saying never seen anything like it etc, but is this how it should be? Is this the type of weather we are supposed to get based on the location of the UK. Has it just been exceptionally mild for the last 20 years or so, or is it just exceptionally snowy the last couple of winters?
-
You're all bastards. The most snow for twenty years, and I've just landed in singapore where its fucking shit.

I was discussing this with a climatologist at work yesterday (it was closed today). He said that the jetstream was in an unusual position - and noted that it had been in odd places in recent years (summer 2007 floods are widely attributed to Jetstream being too far south than usual). Certainly climate sims suggest more 'oddities' and 'extremes' in weather. What he also suggested was that E England getting snow showers off the north sea was not at all unusual, but that because it is earlier in the year, the higher SST's may mean more evaporation = more rain/snow.
He then went and plugged these numbers into his latest hot bit of computational hardware for climate prediction...
And told me that if the cows were all lying down in the SE corner of the field it would rain at 12noon on the 14th May 2011.
Actually, from what I know about it, the Summer of 2003 was more of a worry. This was reported as a > 1 in 500 year event (Leuterbacher 2004 IIRC) and when you see the pdf of the event compared to others its way off the scale...
-
My bro...the one who works for the met office in climate change and prediction [showing off ] said something similar, also said the system is pretty stable and likely to stay put for most of the winter, hence why I've just ordered four of these serious rubbers
(http://padangu-arsenalas.lt/uploads/images/Zieminiu/continental%20wintercontact%20ts830.jpg)
So if it all melts tomorrow I'm sending him the bill.

I'm with JB, it's just not fair. You finally get proper winters over there after we've moved back to Australia! Bastard! All I had was 17 winters of dull, grey shit with the occasional bit of frost and odd snow shower. :furious:

It seems that our little corner of North West Devon is a little island of colour in a sea of whiteness. No snow to speak of in Barnstaple/ Braunton/ Croyde but we can drive up onto Exmoor to get our snow fix - best of both worlds?

Had to go to Hull and Back from Manc today - most of the way was fine apart from the freezing fog and low temperatures around Goole... -12.5 at one point (midday) on the M62...
Worst part was salt&muck on windscreen.. 100% screenwash was freezing on the screen and making a nice slush - then the nozzles froze up..
Fecking grim. Even the heavily gritted roads in 'ull were ice covered with slush.. take care out there folks...

-10 in Rotherham this morning - the main danger was some of the tossers on the road. Saw one over-taking on a snow narrowed road!
We had an 'urgent cases' surgery today - due to some of the docs not getting in. Just some people's definition of urgent differs to mine. First patient in - Well doc I've had this pain for 3 months, I came today as my office is closed. Next patient - wants to discuss genetic screening due to a family history of cancer, she turned up with virtually no info to help. Saw 24 patients - only 2 needed a prescription. We were sure half the people came in as they weren't at work for the day.
-
Bit :off: but

in my local GPs there are no late nights and no weekends - it takes 2 weeks to get an appointment. As I work (when not skiving on her) the only way I could get an appointment last month was to say it was an emergency - this was on the receptionist's advice. Although I was blatantly not an emergency.

Not really the right thread to discuss GP access - but our place opens at 6:45 am for those that need pre-work appointments and shuts at 6:30 pm. Also open Saturday morning. Slightly under half our appointments are book on the day, with the others pre-bookable. We also see unlimited emergency patients in the morning after morning surgery and have a dedicated person doing an urgent surgery from 4-6 pm. It's interesting that it is thought that the global health of the population would not improve if GP access improved from where it is currently, in fact there are probably too many choices for people which leads to totally unjoined up health care.

Icy and snowy weather
229
Before you set off
* you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
* you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
* make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
* remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
* check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted

More snow chaos.
Was suppose to be flying to Canada for a wedding and some skiing. Instead I'm stuck at the MOther-in-law's waiting until Tuesday. Although looking at the forecast more snow is coming so I suspect we'll be heading home for Christmas.
Yet again abit of snow and chaos reigns.
The really annoying thing is that a flight left 3 hours before to our destination and then our flight was cancelled.
Airline customer service is shit - we knew 4 hours before flying the flight was cancelled, but the website and customer service phone numbers provided no information on re-booking.

In case you were thinking 'so much for global warming' check out the global temperature anomalies for Nov 10 vs 1951-80 mean.
Interesting article (http://www.geologywales.co.uk/storms/winter1011a.htm) on how low ice extent in the arctic may be linked to cold winters in Europe. There are ice cores from Greenland which record a +10C leap in temperatures at the end of the last ice age, over only a few decades - could this be the start of something similar?
-
The big fear re climate change in the 70's was global cooling and another ice age.
