i don't think i broke anything, but it was a close call: it rolled inwards because i already have my external ligaments broken (in both ankles, as uncle can confirm) and it got so down that my plantar was almost vertical (so said a friend in terror). therefore, all the impact went on to the bones, with no soft tissue to help...
it's bad.

As long as you also provide us with a photo of you mid pull up in a position where you may or may not have a top rope hidden round the side of the fingerboard. That is the historically proven way to show that you are telling the truth beyond any reasonable doubt.

I suppose that (in conjuction with the one in a vest, sitting on the chair, in front of the fingerboard, with chalked hands, sweating and looking smug) would be irrefutable proof. Dawes might still disagree though.

Munkii, No I wouldn't treat you any differently if you were 20 or 40 or 60. I actually consider what I am posting here as sensible within the context the forum as a whole. Take a bit of time to look around other threads and you will find that from time to time they wander off, miles from their original intention, only to come back again when you least expect it. I found the whole idea of a mass pullupfest amusing and I posted accordingly. One of the beauties of the Internet is that it is open, a bit like stomping off down to the public square and having a shout. You will surely admit that if you were to do that, you would simply have to accept that: while you are at perfect liberty to do so, others would be equally free to: stop to listen, or point and laugh, or ignore you as they see fit.
This thread is not your thread- not because those who don't want to post "sensibly" are nicking it or "ruining" it, but because this is what threads are, long windy things that get snagged and tamgled in all sorts of unexpected (and sometimes fun places).
So in short I have treated your thread the same way as I treat all the other threads on this forum. You can't say fairer than that can you?

A health warning. Once upon a time I would have added to this total considerably. During the 80s and early 90s I often used to to 600 pull ups an hour and do this 3 or 4 times a week. It was part of the style of training at the time. Haston did it so did every body else frequenting Petes eats in those days(the pull ups bars are still there in the back room.
I have to say I am sure it had no real benefit to my climbing, yes I was quite fit, But now all I have are bone spurs in both elbows and resulting nerve pain and now think what was the god damn point?

i too spent the late 70s and early 80s doing thousands of pull ups to the extent i would rather stick pins in my eyes than do them.which also would probably have more training effect on my climbing.

hello Munkii, take no notice of what some people say. I didnt want to enter this thread because some idiots are so anti pull ups, anyway good luck and keep doing your pull ups and climbing and being motivated to do things. Pull ups like many exor simply good luck with your pull ups, ersizes will give you tendinitis, so when doing large numbers its good to vary the angle of the hand this will stop the same bit of tendon sheath from inflaming. For the gainsayers, tell Paxi that pull ups are bad for you he will laugh, tell Chabot he will laugh, tell robin erbesfield she will laugh, tell Ramon, I think thats more than 30 international titles between them, so who is wrong. If you think they are not boulderers you are wrong Patxi might be the best boulderer in the world, he is just not interested. I dont think I have ever met a 8b boulderer who cant do a one arm  by the way, they may pretend to but thats up to them. Anyway Munkii I am old, have an inflamed elbow, got a sore finger and probably average a thousand to  two thousand a week. Good luck and I wish you good climbing or bouldering. My climbing partner also sends her regards and she did 600 tonight after working an 8B+, so its obviously doing her no good whatso ever, cheers from Stevie.

Agree with Stevie.
And would just like to add....
Who gives a fuck if it is good for climbing or not? It's just an aim, a target. It has no more or less point than climbing a route, a boulder problem, training to climb a boulder problem, sitting on an internet forun knobbing your life away or any other climbing related activity. In fact is has no less point than 99.9999% of anything humans waste their mostly fucking pointless lives doing. It's no worse than train-spotting, stamp collecting, judo, tennis, watching mindless telly. And by the same token it's no better. It's just another pointless thing to do. You don't want to join in, then don't. Go and talk about training, or protein supplements, or techno,or anything else you want. Somebody will probably listen, and join in and before you know it you'll have a national organisation with affiliate members and self-help groups where you can discuss your childhood angst and release your inner demons. If you don't want to play our game take your football and fuck off, don't act like the shitty spoilt kid at junior school that everybody hated. Trying to spoil our entertainment, go and find a lonely corner of the playground and play marbles or conkers, BY YOUR SELF. Fucking snobbery, pure and simple.
Munkii this thread is genius, rock on.

Apparently junior competition road cyclists have to use easier gear ratios than an adults in races to protect their knees.

Should a 12 year old (and very keen) climber be encouraged to be doing large numbers of pull ups by other, older climbers?

I don't know how long you've been climbing Munkii, but my advice would be don't worry about training strength, train experience and the rest will come.

 :agree:

And if you are intent on using the fingerboard then fewer pullups, more hanging is the way to go. When I was your age I had little access to the crags and no climbing wall anywhere near where I lived so the temptation to overdo it on my old Entreprise board was big. However, I quickly found that doing loads of pullups just got me sore elbows for a few days whereas fewer pullups and monkeying about between smaller and smaller holds (deadhanging hadn't been invented then) was much more beneficial and fun. I didn't think of it as training (that hadn't really been invented then either) just the nearest thing I could get to climbing.

Munki , add on 300 for Dino Maginley this week, he,s oldtime tradster no computer acess and sends his regards. Sharpie is right in some ways as are others, yes you can hurt yourself, but so what, most if not all of the injuries that have hampered my climbing and bouldering have come from guess what, bouldering. And I mean no disrespect to anybody but whats wrong with being strong, there are and there were even more good people posting on this site and many of them were severly limited from being as weak as shit, I could mention names Mr Pop. When you are young and have lust and spunk is just the time to reap that enomous cornfield of atheletic endeaver. If you can stay away from injoury and only make small gains you will arrive at a much higher level in a few years, when you are young, you heal very quick, anyway who cares about being old its very overrated, take it from me. Munkii I,ll try to get you more pull ups from other old friends but Laurence Maginley and I will get you  around 2000 a week for sure, if that nice young man who trains at the school collects some from all those many super men you will be well on the way.Stevie.

Thanks Stevie, much appreciated.

In fact, weakness wasn't something I deliberately cultivated or particularly valued. I hope I never used it as an excuse. Indeed, I have every respect for the strong - as long as they can actually climb. Being as 'weak as shit' is only a limitation (a very loaded word) if climbing 'hard' (or one particular definition of climbing hard) is seen as the principal purpose of climbing. For me, luckily I guess, given how weak I was/am, it never was. Hence, I never felt particularly limited in my climbing.

I think there is a clear misunderstanding between correlation and causation here. The top climbers can do lots of pull ups because they are top climbers. Being able to do lots of pull ups does not make you a top climber. I guess I'm lucky because most of the people I climb with have climbed font 8B or above, so I'm in good company to know what the top climbers can do. I'd suggest that anyone reading this ignore stevie's sage like advice and instead take onboard some training methods that will give greater gains for less expenditure. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being strong, and I hope one day I can class myself as "strong", but until then I'm training for rock climbing, not just for being strong. Stevie is also very correct when he says that lots of small gains will result in a much higher level in a few years, if you stay injury free. This is perhaps extremely well exemplified by Tyler. The kid trained from a young age, made lots of small gains, then suddenly realised he was at a world class level. Inspiring stuff.

However, pull ups are not the path to the top of bouldering/climbing. They are the path to being able to do lots of pull ups though. I guess it depends where you're heading. Good luck with everyone's goal of reaching 1m.

hello firstly I think we should all just add some pull up numbers to Munkii,s harmless thread after all some of us do a few pull ups,and then perhaps it might be interesting.

Paul B and Uncle (enjoyed your vid, thanks) yes pull ups are a very good way to get good at pull ups, and they are also a good way for getting strong for some aspects of climbing, to say there are other ways to get strong at climbing/ bouldering is something I dont disagree with, but to say it doesnt help climbers get strong at climbing is just plane dumb.

when I was young I could easily do a thousand pull ups in an hour it takes you much longer to find your mat and tooth brush, comb your hair find your mate and go bouldering in the damp. I am old,  and  I can now go climbing   have fun playing on moves then go home and finish off wrecking my self and do a few pull ups, finger hangs and what ever else, I do this in my barn sipping cofee and listning to my limited selection of musicnot ripping my skin falling off friction dependent stuff in the peak.

I now have the added pleasure of helping Munkii reach his total or is it our total. For the last seven and a half months I have been trying to get back into climbing using old school methods and strangely it still works and is indeed working very well.

As for Tylor well please tell me how tall Tyler is and what he wieghs and that will probably supply quite a bit of the answer. Uncle I suppose doing one arms hasnt helped you? My climbing ability is in a simplistic way , is directly related to how strong my fingers are, it is also on steep routes related to how strong my lats are and my core, pull ups train all these muscels fairly well.

Can anything be more simple? Munkii I didnt want to enter your thread except to help you when you were getting silly replies, I certainly dont whish to change your thread or derail it, so in the spirit of your thread add on another 25 from me, sorry no more it was enough to let me know I,m not recovered.Stevie

I'm slightly confused here, I've just done a trial run and assembled all items necessary in under a minute seeing as though my hair hasn't been combed for a fair few years now I'm quite happy to skip that bit but if you think thats going to take me the remaining 59 mins I'll give it a go.

I have to say I absolutely hate it when people break this out. You can claim that people like Tyler are only strong because of their weight but being a lightweight crimp waif myself I think I've admirably disproved this over the last few months.

Quote
.... routes related to how strong my lats are and my core, pull ups train all these muscels fairly well.

See here is a good example, if you want to work your core then isn't it more beneficial to do levers or something instead, to say that a pullup works your core is similar to saying lifting a cup of tea works your bicep, it does but minimally.

Please take these as questions rather than anything else, (as I'm sure Adam wouldn't want me to do it in any other way).

Put me down for 100 since the thread started. I'll generally do about 25 warming up for a fingerboard session.

On a serious note re pullups, especially fingertip pullups, and training. I used to do loads as a kid and it never did me any harm as such - I'm guessing elbows and everything else can get used to it? Or maybe I was lucky. But as to whether it did me a lot of good, I used to think that the routine of fingertip pullups with a minute rest between each set would be a useful form of Power Endurance training or something close to that, but Serpico I think it was pointed out that given that I was doing a lot of pullups each go my forearms were locked for too long to simulate real climbing - ie grip, release, grip, release, etc - and that it was better to train in a way that best imitated climbing, such as, er, well, climbing circuits with timed rest intervals. I suppose my training may have been a close approximation to hanging around for ages trying to fiddle gear in or work out how to do a move.

This is assuming Munkii's 1888 was correct. I can't be bothered to go back and find out.

As I'm completely bored at work I worked it out to 2499. Hmmm wonders who's right.

If we include Unclesomebody's avatar. From Slackers posting it until 14:20 today we can add 24,228.5 one armers. Good work there.

Grand total 26727.5.

I'd be inclined to go with your 2499 Plattsy, I'm guessing Jasper started with Munkii's poor guesstimate of 1888 (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,9978.msg165815.html#msg165815) which he seemed rather despondent about (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,9978.msg165866.html#msg165866).

It could cause trouble when Guinness get wind of the achievment if its not sorted from the start.

2524 it is.

if this is right then currently:

3049 (I'm not inclined to go back and check)

add 30 from me (however I'm still shocked that a 1-armer is credited the same as a normal pull-up)

Current total 3079!

Just to resurrect the best thread ever........Finally bit the bullet and started doing some work on the fingerboard last night. Took some motivation after a long day at work especially when the board is next to my fridge (full of beer). Proved two things to myself. 1: I'm really really weak. 2: I really need to do something about it.

Anyway, 40 pull ups were involved so you can add them to the total. Expect more if I can as I keep the psyche. The only way is up.

hello every body, I feel terribly self concous but add 3900 from me and 1600 from Laurence. Laurence is feeling very proud as she hasnt done a grande for a long time, she did have to go to the physio straight away mind you. Well done Jasper, must be hard next to the fridge, my fridge doesnt have any beer in it and only some natural yoghourt in it, so its easier. I saw more than a few pull ups being done in wales when I was there but those lads and lasses are a bit bashful I suppose. Bumped into Doylo who I,d like to thank for his bits of film on you tube, sorry I didnt thank you on the spot, some of the stuff is brill and very funny, many thanks as I get pretty bored sometimes(hence the pull ups I guess)Stevie.

G.A hows tricks, am very old and weak, but not as old and weak as you.
Kirsty my daughter adds 8 pull ups, shes training for caving, well done birthday girl.
Paul B icecream makers are good, have you done windsreen wipers, or clocks-thats hanging from something by your hands and using your feet like windsreen wipers, or using your feet like an hour pointer, if you combine them in a set of pull ups and have ankle wieghts on you get a fairly nasty excersise. Whats the best numbers on a small metrolious rung for pull ups, without wieght and max wieght, thanks in advance. Stevie

About a month ago I had a laugh and tested all of these things to see where I was after having been injured quite a lot in the last year and a half (I'm not talking pulleys here), straight back it was something like 17 I think ( no doubt your pre-warmup).
Max weight straight back? well the walls here don't have plates and the school is dead so I had to make do with hanging my g/f off my back which interferes with your shoulders at the top. She weighs the same as me so it was an additional 100% bodyweight.
One armers currently is around 5 per arm on a bar (quite below p.b.) and slightly less on a rung.
Uncle and I have mucked around doing weighted one armers after he pm'd you. We're both around the 12.5kg mark which is again well below your 30 or so.
Currenty b/w = 54kg
n.b. everything is done with strict form.
The rest of the results are up on my blog somewhere if you're interested. Pray tell, why do you enquire?

Title: Re: 1 million pull ups
Post by: roddersm on January 03, 2009, 11:27:20 am
Not very many. Maybe 20ish at push but never really tried. Never thought it was that valuable to be able to do lots of pull ups. Usually I would do 5 sets of 10 on a finger board after a 90 mins or so of bouldering. I have a bar in the house and some times do assisted one armers with a sling. I could do about 6 or 7 on each arm when I'm going ok. Can't do a full one armer but can do one from about 120 degrees on my right arm and about 90 degrees on my left.

I'm not that good a climber though-I'm 27 and my bouldering pb is Font 7a and the hardest route I've done is E4 6b, although my general onsight standard would be about E2.

This year I'm aiming to boulder 7b, on-sight quite a few E2, E3s and maybe couple of E4's. The long term goal is to climb Right wall before turning 30!

This is nothing to do with pull ups but I want to give a background to my climbing standard to give a perspective on my pull up ability.

What do other people think? How do you guys train pull ups? Most of the training articles I've read say doing lots of pull ups aren't that useful e.g. Binney, Mcclure, Mccleod etc. However Stevie Haston does loads and climbs really hard.

I was responding to stevies 's question. Also I can see that theres some really strong people on here and I'd like to know how there pull up abilities compare with mine, how and if they train pullups, how their pull up abilities compare to there climbing abilities and whether people rate pull ups as a useful training for climbing.

I know this was not the point off the thread but these are some interesting questions. I wonder what stevie thinks?

It would be interesting to see what level some of the people on here climb and what there pull up abilities. I wonder how someone like stevie who has incredible pullup ability and fitness feels his climbing level relates to his pull up strength especially now hes done his sport climbing pb (8c+, sorry if I've got this wrong).

Should some one at my level focus on trying to do one armers or try and build my level to be able to do say 30+ pull ups? or both? should you do pull ups on finger edges or dead hangs and pull ups seperately? or would none of this help me move up the grades to trad E5, Font 7b\c, red point sport f7c\8a?

Is doing pullups really a waste of time?

If you can't do about 10 of them no.  Beyond that point it has little relevance to climbing.  Areas like lock-offs, campusing, one-arms will help boost arm strength (and shoulder girdle) and your climbing.

One old man climbing 8c+ doing loads of pull-ups does not make it the right way to train.  Maybe climbing juggy sport routes in Spain have similar pull-up moves, but climbing in England does not.

i think your wrong there dylan.
Doing pull ups is not a waste of time at all, Its probably not going to be as benificial as say a structured finger board or woodie session mixed in with stretching, weights, situps, pushups etc....
but it sure beats drinking beer on the sofa watching pr0n for what it does to you in terms of training for climbing.

as a manufacturer of sofas, i would kindly ask you to refrain from casting aspersions on sofas in general, and also on their role in a well-rounded training regime.  i'm sure i'm not the only one here who agrees that a good sofa plays a very important role in his (or her) programme.  remember, a sofa might not be the most important factor in making the progression from 8a to 8b, but it still played its part.

Listen to Yoss.

I regularly hook my toes under the sofa to do sit-ups and often raise them on it for the same, not to mention the fornication...  Energy in; energy out.  It's a simple equation.

Having dancing lessons would make you a better climber than a million pull-ups.

Never (http://tracyandersonmethod.com/) - Just look at the peacock! She couldn't do Crescent Arete, whereas Darcy Bussel would flash The Very Big & The Very Small; probably has already.

Pull-ups are for prison queers.

It follows that Prison may simply be a place where everybody's knocking out millions of pullups, avoiding larger men who themselves are avoiding increasingly large men. At the apex of this house of cards sits the 1 true Jailhouse 'SugarDaddy'. This is he....

My Czech friend Jan (Honza) holds the world pull ups record: 978 in an hour in minisets of 7, see Prekonani rekordu - Honza Kares (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2RlMgHyzTQ#noexternalembed) He climbs 8a/b as well and helps us bolt in the cave near where we live in Sardinia, we're going there tomorrow. He's the guy drilling at http://www.lezec.cz/clanek.php?key=7587&lim=0&==&caut=#koment (http://www.lezec.cz/clanek.php?key=7587&lim=0&==&caut=#koment) and last week freed an 8a+ and a newly-bolted 8a.

Indeed, training is one third exercise, one third rest and one third eating/drinking. So you can do at least two thirds without leaving the sofa and with some good pr0n probably the whole lot.   :rtfm:

...i'm also thinking you could tie yourself to a sofa and do pullups as power training...

just done 90 in groups of 10 plus 12 to warm up and i forgot to add my warmups from the previous 3 sessions which amounts to an additional 36 . I increased my rest period to 4 mins between sets . Feel like its benifitting my pe level so hopefully i can break into the 7a sport category but i think ste macs campus training on a beastmaker with your feet on a chair would be insane for pe ? i make the current total at 11 325 ;)

there is a pullup bar 4 metres from me, yet my legs refuse to carry me to it, otherwise I would bang out the 8 required for roundage. I thought about it, and its the thought that counts.

one unforseen consequence of doing the pullups seem to be abs of steel well abs of lightly boiled potatoes. The fact that stevie and laurence can pull off 4 digits in a day
leaves me in a state of  :jaw:

When I do pull ups (which is rarely) I tend to either do them with leg raises, or with hips at 90 degrees throughout.

But I'm still a fat twat.

If it's 4 metres upwards that would consitute a major barrier.
