Title: Quality fishing pics
Post by: BB on April 17, 2009, 08:55:36 pm
I've been scanning in a load of old fishing pics from my youth. Anyone else got some fishing pics they're especially proud of?

I'm clearly stoned in this one though!

Got an absolute cracker of when I won my zone in an open competition on the Mersey. Should scan it in.

This is a personal favourite.  Not my thumb, ha ha.

Gorgeous Esox btw, proper pretty.  Anyone caught (& / or eaten) Zander?  Never had the pleasure.

Aw man, I have a few pictures I could put up on here but no scanner...  Damnation.

Good pics though, shame about the stoned look!  You sure you didn't just wake up and catch that thing?

So was I...

Does anyone have any Quality Fisting Pics?

Or do we have to look at gaping cod mouths and slippery eels and use our imagination?

Fishing's the new rock n roll! Was beyond obsessed with the sport from a young age but fly fishing is truly the shizzle and really keen to get re-involved this year.

They stock them in Fontainebleau  (http://www.les-carpes.org/les_poissons.htm) for this very purpose

There is some bouldering around there too.

After yesterdays excitement stalking trout, Lagers Jr got me out of bed at 7am for some more urban adventuring. The result was her biggest trout so far.

Those brown trout are brilliant. Where abouts did you get the one in the city ? Have you ever caught them on the fly in the city centre ?

Best spots for fly fishing in the city centre are:

downstream side of Blonk St bridge (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=sheffield+uk&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=29.358024,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=53.385555,-1.462276&spn=0.002694,0.006866&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.385496,-1.462159&panoid=VZ0k3-r551l0XX7oL6J30g&cbp=12,44.42255258964632,,0,4.15625)

Plenty of good spots all along the Don really

One of the more wacky spots (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=sheffield+uk&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=29.358024,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=53.380789,-1.46135&spn=0.002694,0.006866&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.38105,-1.46164&panoid=QHQEERnsy5h0s8YQ-EY4ew&cbp=12,183.29380762409744,,2,8.656250000000008)

Short abseil gets you to a spooky pool with a few resident brownies. I always have the feeling that something is watching me from deep in the tunnel..... brrrrrrr.

You can also access The Porter Brook here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=sheffield+uk&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=29.358024,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=53.375367,-1.468241&spn=0.002695,0.006866&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.375315,-1.468101&panoid=x7CZBjHGuumjN1pmpnFNpQ&cbp=12,231.2908207719965,,0,3.0312500000000075). Easy climb down. It looks an unlikely place, but before the Great Flood this was an ace spot for big fish in a very small stream; the deep channel down the middle has filled in now - might come back into condition if we're lucky. The landlady at the Matilda Tavern used to feed the trout.

Fly fished the fuck out of Llyn Brenig yesterday. Lost a very decent size rainbow early doors and a few thereafter. Was by far the most torrential conditions I've ever fished in. Left with a rainbow of just over 1lb but lost plenty more. Most takes on booby were unexpectedly lethargic. Washing line and intermediate seemed to be the order of the day at the dam end. Incidentally, does anyone fish Brenig?

Yeah, climb over the railings by the new cycle/footpath on the R bank (looking downstream) in front of the block of flats.

Possibly, but I use a 5/6 weight brook rod with a 5 weight line.  ;D

I'll be in trouble if i get anything big though!

I had another half a dozen last night to about 7/8lb, including a really nice ghostie. I've got a piccy on my phone that I'll try an post soon.

Fatneck's been avoiding the real challenge in his life (the cave) by fishing on the Orme and bagging 4 mackerel the other night I hear. I could understand if it was spinning between redpoint attempts on the big link but it's not.

Get yourself out Chris and crush that east coast mackerel scene!

Dug out my old fly tying kit last night. Wonder if I'm living life in reverse.

Underground good work! I gave a away a lot of my materials the other night to my boss' father to tie me a new box of buzzers. Would have saved them for you had I have known (I owe you one from way back mate!).

Mr Starfish, I'm glad to see it! What did you take them on out of interest? Hopefully will make it out to Ladybower in the next few weeks. Incidentally how much is a day ticket? Brenig is 17 pounds stirling which seems something of a dramatic increase compared to a decade ago.

2 took a very slow moving buzzer. The other took a very fast dog nobbler in the shallows. I had a few small perch and 3 little brown trout out of the stream at the east end.

Full day at Ladybower is £12.80, from 2pm is £8.80. Evenings are best as you'd expect, so the afternoon ticket is good value.

La grande truite et la grande biere: 3lb & 568ml

Caught at Ladybower last night on a tiny gold head nymph in the margins. On my 7.5ft 4/5 weight rod and 2.75lb tippet in open, deep, snag free water it was an entertaining fight; proper big runs. It was worth being piss wet through in the howling wind.
I stopped off at The Vine on the way home to say hi to a mate.
The police turned up just as we were shaking hands out the front and decided to search him on suspicion of drug dealing. Idiot was in possession, but had failed to own up until they found it so was cuffed and put into the back of the van.
They then turned their attention to me and asked if I had anything on me that I shouldn't.
I thought this was a fantastic opportunity to show off my fish so told them that I had nothing on my person , but did have a "fucking big trout in the car".
He asked "are you high on something?" and shone his torch into my face.
I told him the story of the light line, the big fish, the wind and the rain and tried to convey how exciting it had been and how I was still buzzing from the experience.
He said "you really want to show me this 'fish' don't you? You'd better not be wasting my time."
"I'm not trying to waste your time, I'm just trying to make the best of the situation and now that you've locked my mate up, there's only you to talk to"
He said that he could take me to the station for a full drugs search.
I resisted the urge to say something along the lines of - don't you know who I am? I'm J R fucking Hartley!
The humourless wanker didn't come up to the car to see my prize.
As I say. Wanker.

That's genius. Good job as BB says though re the caught in possession with a dog nobbler! Orange booby at Brenig is like fishing a stock pond with a maggot.

Probably heading to Meadow fisheries in Mickle Trafford next week.  Would much prefer to journey to Ladybower but is a little too far at the moment.

Yes Ive noticed that too... Its not a bad accidental fake fish is it?
It was a very shallow lake and the keepnet was hard to submerge completely.

I was interested in the earlier pics of Sheaf trout, so I went to try it yesterday with a friend. We caught 5, with 1 of them being about 1 pound, and another at almost 1.5 pounds.

By that little concrete weir thing with the metal ladder, or further down towards the "cage"? I've had some good sport fly fishing the upstream side of the weir this year - plenty of room for the back cast when kneeling on the weir.

This was a winter match on the Kennett & Avon canal.

It took me almost an hour to land it on a 22 hook and 1lb hook length.

And I still didnt win.

Not as far down as that. If you go upstream from the ladder thing to the road with the weir above it, then walk round the corner to the auto repair centre and (with difficulty) fish over the metal fence . It was a struggle to land it. Lucky we had a long net handle.
The other 4 were from just above the ladder and weir you mentioned.

I know the bit you mean. I've fished there by wading up from the bigger weir (climb over a wall from the footpath) to the smaller weir and then cast upstream. I stop by the fence on the way home from work to watch the fish sometimes. Loads of rats in the river round there.

I'd avoided fishing through/over the fence coz of the obvious difficulty of landing/returning fish.
Good effort for persevering with over-the fence tactics

Is there some strange law that means that things stuck up your arse-hole don't belong to you?

When was the last time you saw a policeman conduct an internal cavity search in a pub carpark?

Fair point.

Not quite a carpark, and a different cavity, but certainly beyond the call of duty (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/beds/bucks/herts/8168353.stm)  :wank: Should have got a jail sentence though, since surely it constitutes rape

Had an incredible day on saturday. Left Priory Wharf Birkenhead at 7am and headed out into Liverpool Bay over a few different wrecks. Had my first conger eel on the first baited cast of the day to a big section of mackerel on a 150lb trace. Fought like a bastard! Probably around 11lb. Tonnes of Bull Huss, Pollock, Doggies, Pouting, Gurnard (red, tub), whiting and we even got a 6lb summer Cod. Mackerel were beyond abundant. No tope sadly but hopefully get out in the next few weeks. Skipper took 62 in a day on board last week out of Blackpool and apparently lost around 40! Have a video with the conger which I'll get off the boss.

Good shit Mills! Give me a shout if there's any space next time!

Just got back from a week on the Lleyn and did plenty of fishing. Results where somewhat poorer than expected. Only managed 4 (4!!!) mackerel, 1 decent ballan (on limpet!), loads of dogfish and loads of pin whiting (worse than doggies!). My main disappointment came from the lack of pollock. I spent a long time spinning my favourite pollack marks and literally days covering new, amazing looking, blatant pollock country without a sniff!

Tides were fairly middlin' but I expect better. I mean 4 mackerel after a week on the Lleyn is simply unbelievable! I usually rely on my summer holidays to supply my winter cod fishing needs (bait wise) and fill the freezer!

Anyway, good effort with the conger! I spent a few hours half heartedly losing gear with halves of mackerel attatched at night, in the rain, at low tide, last week but a conger still evades me!
Have some (shit) photos of the wrasse so will post it them up when I get them off my eldest.

Si, we took literally hundreds of mackerel the other week. Total nuisance hooking 6 on the drop at a time. Save your petrol money and it'll cost you 35 quid for a full day out Liverpool Bay way departing from Priory Wharf. You can get your birdspotting erections too out there.

Very surprised the Lleyn performed so poorly. I walked out to Hoylake at low tide today and if I can map any channels out will be going on a bass quest next week whilst I have some free time if you'd care to join me. One of my dad's friends owns a commercial boat and was telling us there are a few guys that head out there on quad bikes and lay baited lines at low tide and apparently do OK. I refuse to believe it's as poor a venue as people seem to make out. I suspect it's more likely the obese choads can't face a walk out exceeding 200 metres. You and I on the other hand being the elite athletes that we are should capitalise and get out there.

Do you fancy New Brighton on the low in the next few days at all? Spurdogs left right and centre by all accounts on Wirral Sea Angling forum.

Will actually get that Conger vid for you too this week.

Rays a plenty as well by the sound of things! On the subject of bass, a four pounder was caught at Mariners Wharf (!) last week and plenty are coming in off the Hoyle bank as well. I'm psyched, we'll have to sort something out!

Title: Re: Quality fishing pics
Post by: fatneck on August 24, 2009, 12:56:19 pm
Yes, a ballan. I look browned off as I'd just spent two minutes getting the hook out with a disgorger that was just slightly too small!

I hate leaving hooks in fish and will go to great lengths to avoid it happening, probably to the extent that I miss a lot of bites striking too early!

Cracking fight off it on a light-ish carp rod. There's huge potential for a record wrasse around the Lleyn...

Ah yeah, leaving hooks in fish is shit, as is keeping on land too long.

Recall my first Tench.  Think it was a size 12 or 14 w/ a particularly pronounced barb.  Took ages to remove the hook, I had to return it to the water a couple of times for it to recover.  After that I moved to barbless hooks.

I wonder where the anglers who don't kill their catch stand on the issue of cruelty and whether they were in favour of the ban on hunting mamals with dogs?

As far as I'm concerned i don't care if it is cruel, your right to fish exceeds the pain and suffering caused to a bloody fish.

Bailey's a funny guy.

This cruelty to fish card is nonsense.  I'm routinely cruel to humans & I don't get too many complaints.  Pretty clear to me:  If you kill it, make sure someone or something eats it (or at least has sex w/ it) outside of that, I'm not too fussed.  Bigger fish to fry etc..

It's rare to be able to kill something w/out being cruel, if you can, then you're probably a vet.

I hope you're not going to extrapolate that it's OK to torture animals as long as you eat them afterwards?  I rarely if ever allow meat in my mouth - and the times that I do are none of your business  :-[ - but I'd not even GO fishing these days unless I knew that someone would eat what I caught.  Dunno, maybe I'm odd, but I feel the urge to kill everything I catch.

Oh hell no- that's completely wrong, and I consider most farming methods to be mild forms of torture. You say you hurt humans- but humans have the choice to do something about it, even though most of them probably don't- whereas farm animals can't do anything about their treatment or captivity unless you've been on the Orwell...

Tried some battered skate when last in Whitby at the Magpie Cafe as friends had the platter for "two" (could easily have fed four) which had four large pieces of battered fish, one of which was Skate.  Quite a delicate taste from what I remember

I went for the trio of lemon sole, salmon and pan-fried king scallops  8)

My rod has been dusted off of late. Had a couple of sessions trying my luck in the murky depths of the Bristol Channel, but no joy yet. What bait have you been using Tom? I've been trying mackerel harvested from the Devon seas, but haven't had a single bite yet. Any other ideas?

I managed to catch a grey mullet off Berry Head by foul hooking it and pulling it in backwards. Didn't think much to its eating credentials though.

Also, there's a (light-hearted by his standards) article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/aug/22/george-monbiot-fishing) by George Monbiot. Got me psyched. Anyone got a kayak going cheap?

From what I’ve read it’s one of those fish (the other notable example being Dover Sole) which benefits from being slightly less fresh. Odd as it may seem it’s best to leave it in the fridge for maybe two days before eating.

I'm completely ignorant of the different methods of obtaining scallops, but now I know (presumably hand-dived is less destructive to their environment and ensures they aren't over-harvested?).

Either way it was damn nice and I'd reiterate that its well worth visiting for anyone going to Whitby (apparently Rick Stein's favourite Fish restaurant if you're arsed about such celebrity endorsements).  We had to queue (but not for long) as did those before (obviously!) and after us...

Yup, it's not so much the over-harvesting as the destruction of the seabed environment by dredge trawling and the waste catch as a result.

Had some hand-dived scallops from the back of the fish van when we were on North Uist. Pan fried in butter over a campfire, just incredible.

Simone, I can't say I've ever had any luck with Mackerel slivers outside of catching winter whiting and cod or as part of a cocktail. I'd do a bit of species hunting ont tinterweb and see what you're after. Peeler crab is by far and away the best most fragrant bait you can use at any time. It's a little awkward to present on the hook at first but you'll find photographic instructions on the web.

We've been using calamari squid and sandeel cocktails of late.

http://www.zen18975.zen.co.uk/ (http://www.zen18975.zen.co.uk/)  is someone's site for Bristol Channel shore fishing. A good place to start I reckon. Let's know how you get on!

I've heard similar Bonjoy. I recall Bruno (Lorenzo's uncle and seafood restaurateur par exellence) recommending that Octopus be soaked in fresh water for several days prior to preparation. With his homemade houmous it was probably the nicest piece of seafood I've ever eaten.

Nice pictures BB! What bizarre looking creatures!

Fresh mackerel will catch just about anything that swims in my experience, frozen mackerel is probably best as part of a cocktail as Tom said. Frozen squid is such a handy bait, always having some in the freezer especially for cod. Brizzle Channel had a poor cod season last year (as did the whole of the west coast) but that often means that the following year will be a bumper year. Fingers crossed hey!

Si, thanks so much for the link to the guardian article, I somehow contrived to miss it last week! Kayak fishing is something I've always wanted to try, there's been a guy catching smoothhound and rays from our local beach using one and it looks like such fun!

There's been a few whiting showing this week so I'm hopefull that the cod will be here soon!

Had the first session of the summer at New Brighton tonight with a box of squid and mackerel. Stupid me thought the rays might be in but alas I think we'll have to wait until mid august to try this again. Not a sausage other than windburn :(

Fatneck, if you see this, let's crush fishing soon.

Fished off Manly beach on Sunday and Monday night this week, using paternostered pilchard and a surf popper on a dropper. Landed 5 flathead to 3lb on Sunday, plus 2 flathead and a 2ft shovel-nosed shark on Monday. No photos sadly, but the flathead were very tasty.

Can't wait for some more action, but the tides and conditions won't be right until early next week  >:(

Unless....I wonder what the fishing is like at low tide?! Is it worth a go?

Where you are I'm sure you can fish any tide. Might even be some nice deep channels you can cast into that you wouldn't be able to reach at  high tide. My brother up in Townsville does OK fishing up there regardless of tide, but I think inside the GBR tides are considerably smaller.

Experiment over. Didn't have a sniff on the ebbing tide. Gentle swell and high tide at 8/9pm this weekend so with any luck I should be able to post some pics.

Clocked two magpies this morning (only superstition) so knew some action was on the cards. Cast in at New Brighton and hit a rare shoal of mackerel. Chuffed. One of them is a whopper by boat standards so tonight's dinner is sorted. Also lost something pretty big that had the rod bent double. Perhaps a smoothhound maybe I'm not sure.

More a report than an image sorry!

It was really good actually. We had it filleted and cooked on the barby. It's quite a bloody fish and there's pronounced red flesh just under the skin and along the spine, so I cut that out following advice from friends. The remaining flesh tasted quite similar to tuna, but was whiter and more flakey.

Didn't notice that! Cheers for pointing it out as I need to refill my new 4 litre V8 Landrover!

I was going to head out fishing last night, but figured that standing on the beach with a 13ft carbon lightning conductor during a thunderstorm was not a one of my better ideas. Fingers crossed for tonight!

Sounds great eating BB! Similar profile to a mackerel (fought well I bet!?) with a salmon-like head eh.

We've been hitting the night scene hard over here of late. Night before last I took a plaice, few whiting (some unexpectedly big) and lost something of a good size at the waterline. Crouch couldn't get a torch onto it in time. Best not have been a large tasty bass.

Planning to hit the low tide tonight at 2 though looking pretty windy at the moment. Keen to tempt a good ray out now they're in!

Not quality, but look what happens when you take a (not so) young offender with a voracious appetite night fishing...

Honestly mate, I don't think I've ever seen that much braid leave the reel in such a short space of time! I thought I'd hooked something truly enormous. Apparently, salmon aren't renowned fighters either! By all accounts, tailor, kingfish and school sharks go much better.

We've been hitting the night scene hard over here of late.

I'm really lucky here as the beach is floodlit so no need for a headtorch. Night fishing is definitely the way forward though.

I can't view the pictures from work, but will definitely check them out when I get  home.

Bumpede into my old fishing mate on sat,he'd been to france.had the lake record at 53lb and a 48lb cat ! Said the cat fucking killed him.

I remember seeing John Wilson catching one years and years ago on his fishing programme. It snapped his rod and he still managed to play it to the surface holding the rod in two. Looked totally exhausting!

Think I'm going to hit the winter match scene up this year. On a different tip, my summer bass quest isn't going well. Think I lost a good one in the surf the other night and the perfect conditions yielded nothing the other day.

Tried a spot that is new to me on my local beach this saturday past. Rumours of bass were abound. Perhaps they were there or perhaps they weren't but after 1.5 hours fishing down to the low I moved round to flattie corner and caught myself a very very tasty dab. Had intended to follow Rick Stein's pink peppercorn sauce recipe but didn't have the key requisite ingredient. This is the first dab I've ever eaten and I was majorly shocked at how nice it was. Being a member of the plaice family I probably shouldn't be surprised but I'd recommend any fish lovers to try it if you haven't already. Local bass quest continues.

Another bumper night on the beach last night. Had a flathead, a salmon (australian), a shovel nose and a tailor (my first).

Got snapped up twice, by something very large last Friday night too. I suspect it was some kind of shark and to be honest, I'm starting to get apprehensive about the possibility of hooking something large and toothy in the dark!

Caught my first pacific black bream last weekend. It's now chopped into shark sized chunks and sitting in the freezer ready for the fishing sesh tomorrow night. Lost something proper big last weekend too, so I've made up some new rigs. I've upgraded from 15 to 20lb flurocarbon and am now using a pair of size 6/0 cricle hooks.

I'm using 15lb braid as mainline with a flourocarbon hook length. Circle hooks generally mean you can get away without wire. Plus many of the sharks aren't of the tooty variety. Port Jackson's and shovel- nose sharks just have grinding pads.

Cracking fishing over the weekend. The grand is:

6 Part Jackson Sharks up to over 20lb
1 Shovel Nose about 7 or 8lb
1 Fiddler ray about 5lbish
3 Tailor all around the 2-3lb mark

The tailor are really exceptional fighters. If they were the size and weight of the Port Jacksons I'd have had a Hemmingway-esque battle on my hands.

Piccies of the tailor and Fiddler ray to follow.

A mate has started fishing with me now so I'll hopefully be able to get some better pictures. A picture of a fish lying on the sand in the dark isn't going to win any awards.

Not bad really

We didn't stay for long yesterday, but it made me think about treating myself to an evening there on my own - especially as my fly fishing urges are being thwarted by shit mobility.

There's something very satisfying about catching those crucians and tench on light tackle.

I usually fish a 2 or 3m whip, but I've got a Des Taylor Pocket Rocket (http://www.grandeslam.co.uk/acatalog/Pen_Pocket_Rocket.html) that is giving me a lot of amusement at the moment.

WMD is a brilliant little venue! I used to hammer that place when I was a kid, me and my friend Michael used to fish it nearly every weekend for the crucians and tench, Michael even had the two Ghosties out on floating bread. You never knew what you were going to catch when your float went under at WMD, I've had some really nice fish out of there and some big nets as well.

Adam, let me know if you're heading up for an evening I'd love to have session up there it's been too long.

In case you didn't know... it's no longer free to fish WMD

a bloke called Chris manages it (lives near there I think)

£4 for a day or £35 for the year

tench have been hugging the dam wall

this weather has brought the carp up to the top - nice to watch them drifting about

plenty of frog sex going on - much to the delight of that rather bold heron that hangs out there

Kingfish definitely live up to the hype. We were kind of scared we'd actually hook into a big one as our heavy gear isn't really heavy enough. A 40lb fish can strip 400m of 30lb braid off your reel in about 20 seconds, so I'm told.

I went on a holiday with the missus to Hayman Island on the barrier reef and they had 20kg GTs that would take food from your hand at the jetty. It was possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen., No fishing in the marina of course.  I have video of it somewhere. I'll try and find it.

If you ever head up North my brother and my nephew do loads of fishing off Townsville, mostly from kayaks. The advantage of the sea almost always being flat calm.

Ok so it's not exactly shark fishing, but I recently managed to pick up a match box and 13m Milo pole for £100 and had my first outing at the lake I grew up fishing on last week. Managed  half a dozen skimmers, the biggest being this pound and a half specimen ;)

Delighted with my new purchases, particularly as my elbows are suddenly both screwed and I need a break from bouldering!

Also managed a session at Pigeons Cave last Thursday after hearing reports of mackerel being in and despite the mackerel not exactly being "in" (it's a bit early really) I did manage this mighty specimen which tasted particularly nice :) as well as three small pollack...

Title: Re: Quality fishing pics
Post by: fatneck on May 29, 2012, 08:14:57 am
There are more sporting methods than the one I'm about to describe, but in terms of sheer effectiveness and ease of use, you can't beat a set of feathers!

These are relatively cheap to buy and when combined with a 2-3oz lead (depending on the caliber of your rod) and fished in a sink and draw style (lift rod tip up, then lower the rod tip whilst winding in) they mimic a shoal of baitfish. In fact a heavier weight is generally better as it tends to fizz through the water and encourages good movement of the feathers. If mackerel are in the area, they can be suicidal and large catches are possible. I would suggest that if you've struggled to catch from the shore it possibly more down to location and timing than tactics, as mackerel are not noted for being hard to catch (not wishing to demean any previous efforts by anyone!)! There are lots of rock marks on the Lleyn currently producing good catches. See this (http://www.wirralseafishing.co.uk/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=22426) recent report (recognize the area?) and this forum (http://www.wirralseafishing.co.uk/forum/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=68&sid=a767d3fe8ada56f842643f9558aeff60) in general for up to date catch information.

Obviously, only take what you need for the table. And worth noting that there has been a lot of discussion in the angling media recently about whether returning mackerel to the sea once handled generally results in their death or not (if that makes any sense!). I've never caught enough to warrant returning any as generally speaking, once I've caught enough for the table/bait needs I'll switch to fishing for something else, so have no anecdotal evidence to add to this...

Feel free to ask questions as I may or may not have made any sense!

I might still have some spare sets like that for freecycling if you want some JB. I got some off ebay and didn't realise I was buying packs of 3 rather than single ones. Lagerfish has had a few of them off me already.

Anyone got any idea if the mackerel have been called on the east coast?

I failed to get any pics, but on Sunday I took The Daywalker's Child to Wiremill for a short session

he started off with a nice crucian followed by two roach about 10oz and 12oz

he had to properly hold on with both hands (2m whip) for all of them

excellent fish handling skills for a 5 year old

My youngest is now obsessed with fishing especially of the sea kind which i know little about having been a coarse and fly fisherman all my life. Had a load of flatties this year in the estuary where we live and took him on his first boat trip on Sat in a mates boat.
He caught a pollack and 5 small codling before getting a nice 2 lbs cod, all in an hour an a half.

Best day of his life he claimed.

Having flashbacks to my youth now as spending every evening making up rigs and reading fishing magazines.

Fatneck, before too long you will find your self getting a second mortgage to feed the coarse fishing habit, possibly the most expensive sport in the world if you cant resist shiny things. Any what ever you do dont ever get into match fishing. Makes golf seem cheap.

Whatever you do, don't ask advice on good rigs and bait from anyone fishing who looks over 60, as they will all give different and complex advice, and take hours to do it.

Ha! I used to match fish all over Cheshire before I discovered climbing and what life was really all about but it's incredibly hard to not "need" new gear all the time...

I've really bided my time about getting course tackle again and this has proven it's worth in my being able to pick up the pole and box for an absolute song and am prepared to sit back and wait for more bargains to come up to keep the cost down...

Having said all that I do need a new catapult/plummet/floats/meat punch/specialist elastic lubricant etc etc Not to mention looking to update my lure fishing kit - braid/rubber lures/£20 plugs etc...  :badidea:

Great that your youngest is psyched on fishing, I've always taken my girls fishing, they always particularly enjoyed sea fishing and I can't wait to take the lad when he's a bit older....

Psyched!!!!!!

Si, I have a fair amount of coarse gear that I accumulated over many years (Preston Innovations, Daiwa, Sensas etc etc). If I could borrow a pole, I'd be happy also to pool all this gear and do the odd coarse session. Additionally, I want to plan a day charter trip departing from Birkenhead Priory Wharf to Liverpool Bay this coming summer. Absolutely unreal sport out there. If anybody else is keen (JB, Lagers, Swilson etc etc), holla if you're keen.

Forgot to mention JB, try looking at the forum on wirralseafishing.co.uk if you're thinking of fishing the shores north west/north Wales way. A great resource to see where's fishing well. I had some Mackerel from the shore at New Brighton last summer which was a first for me and something of a surprise.

My freezer is loaded with black lug ready for a bass extravanganza at the drop of a hat. Reports from Pensarn/Abergele way etc are very encouraging so far.

Awesome guys. Yeah that charter directory is super useful. Open invite if anybody else wants to come. You don't need fishing experience either if you're worried about that.

Will start to make some noises re dates this coming week. Thinking 12 hour trip departing from either Liverpool or Priory Wharf, Birkenhead in Wirral.

Getting a flex on in Cardigan bay over the bank holiday. Hopefully something to report back with photo wise after a piss poor winter season (biggest codling about 1/4 lb!?).

my mate Otter is interested - usual issues around work, but keen

me and him went to Wiremill last night and had a top session - fished until 10pm when we couldn't see the float/rod tip any more - hanging on for that last chance to get a whopper (didn't happen)

couple of fan tail crucians to 2 lb, tench to 2lb, couple of bream around 1 lb, usual roach and perch - I had a beautiful roach of maybe a pound and a quarter

I tried a bit of spinning to try get one of the bigger perch - only got a comedy tiddler about an inch longer than the Meps

Good on you for organising a group fishing therapy session lads! The psyche is contagious, so this weekend, I sucked it up and braved the winter chill.

Spent a few hours 'tiddler snatching' with light UK coarse gear off the beach and was rewarded with a new PB flathead. A stonking great 62cm lizard which is now filleted and in the fridge. No photos sadly as it was after dark when I arrived home.

Tides are perfect this week, so I'll be out shark fishing tonight and tomorrow if I can swing it with the missus.

Regarding the boat trip on Discovery (http://www.discoverycharters.co.uk/index.php) (I'm assuming this is the best boat? New Daiwa gear as I don't have my own etc), I can do 7th, 11th, 12th and 15th July. Any of these dates any good for yous?

They will try and accomodate other dates but these are just the trips they already have scheduled and have spaces for and they are all general bottom/wreck fishing trips which I'm assuming would be best for people?

Had a miserable attempted smash and Dab on Sunday. Horizontal rain and windy. Pink peppercorn butter sauce will have to wait. Si, really psyched to smash the pole scene again. Scratching around for Gudgeon in the dying minutes of a Shropshire Union match to win by a dram is where it's at.

Sorry Mono, this one's mine and I'm far too attached to it. It's not all roses though...

Had one of 'those' sessions on Tuesday night where everything went wrong. Lost 4 sharks in the surf and used up all my fresh bait with nothing but a small fiddler ray to show for it. Completely out of 8/0 hooks now and will have to spend a couple of hours making up some new wire traces before I can get out again.

I've done quite a bit of fly fishing with light tackle on small rivers, definitely the best way to fly fish. It's way more exciting than fishing a reservoir or pond full of stock fish. There's some good fly fishing to be had on the upper River Don, it's quite popular now but I think a good stretch of it is owned by the Salmon and Trout association so be aware of it if you head up that way.

I'd love a day on the Wye. Many years ago I had a great session on The Duddon in the Lake District at a stretch near the farm of a friend of my dad. Absolutely one of the most memorable sessions ever catching wild brownies on self-tied dry flies. Great work on getting stuck in there Lagers.

Been having some great Liverpool park sessions of late on the pole. Hopefully got a bumper net coming up this Thursday too out with Fatneck. Anyone else on the long pole scene?

Most of what we caught in the Wye were little brownies, but both caught browns and rainbows over 1.5 lb. My first fish was a 2lb rainbow in the first 10 mins - Otter was most envious.

I thought I'd posted this pic (below)? maybe not

as a warm up for the Wye, I went on the Don and Sheaf to get my rusty fly fishing skills going

end result was this monster out of the Sheaf on 1.7 lb tippet. Fish weighed an ounce shy of 2lb. Heart in the mouth action from start to finish. I was only expecting tiddlers.

Tom and I hit a local commercial water, Lingmere, (http://www.lingmere-fishery.co.uk/) last night and practically emptied the place! We'd decided before the off to have a little wager on the biggest fish AKA The Spampionship and up until 9.58pm Tom was winning with a personal best Tench..

Afternoon rod fettlers,
Anyone have any knowledge on Seahouses/Beadnell area (Northumberland coast)? Will have a chance for a quick session end of this month, and have read it's worth a go spinning there, keen to dust off the plugs and have a bass session, waste of time?

I've had a bit of success at Stag Rocks, Bamburgh whilst staying up there - pollack and little coalies - lost a bigish eel at the edge of the rocks

if the weather's too rough to justify getting too close to the edge, you can shelter behind the lighthouse and chuck a bait out - reasonably deep water not too far out

bit further south is cullernose point - not fished it, but it looks great

Runt

No news of mackerel up here yet or bass. The bass fishing is not great even when they are about.

Cullernose point is one of the favorite areas for mackerel when they arrive.

The best bet if you want to spin at the minute is Alnmouth, you can fish from the road bridge down to the mouth for free. It holds a decent head of sea trout upto 3-4 lbs and the odd salmon that i have seen taken to the high teens. They maybe showing now especially with all the fresh water running at the minute but the best time is September onwards when they stop netting out of Amble. Right at the estuary mouth is also the best spot that i know about for Bass but have not heard of any caught yet. Small red condoms or mepps on an evening is best.

If you want to catch flatties the estuary is full of them, just use your spinning rod and a basic two hook rig with makerel strips and you will catch every cast. Better at low water in the stretch 200-400 meters up from the mouth, opposite the cubes.

Round two of The Spampionship trophy race was also won by Fatneck again today although I did lose a common carp that was knocking on the door of 10-20lb on medium elastic first chuck of the day. Thought I was off waterskiing for a while.

now, here's my "problem"

I have this coming Monday off - whole day dedicated to me time

I can't chose between another day on The Wye chasing wild browns and rainbows with the odd stocked brown (likely to have the whole beat to myself!) or a day at Pennine Trout Fishery or similar with a chance of getting a farmed double figure monster and average size around 4lb

The Wye is likely to be in good nick and probably the clearest water for months as the rain fucks off

but a double figure trout...

Title: Re: Quality fishing pics
Post by: lagerstarfish on July 20, 2012, 10:47:48 am
I ought to add that Mrs Starfish likes it when I bring fish home - the trout brothel is likely to result in 3 fish at least 4 lb each - the painfully beautiful Wye will likely result in 2 fish of 2lb each which taste unique (the wild ones) due to an untainted diet from one of the most life rich rivers in the country

climbing analogies do not help, since I can't do any and can't remember what it used to be like :selfpity:

having said that, I do remember that numbers/grades mean little compared to quality - and quality is increased by catching good conditions

Correct choice. I fish the aln which is about the same size as the Wye, maybe a bit bigger. Totally wild river though where you have to wade upstream all the way as the banks are so overgrown, feels like proper mr Crabtree. I have even seen otters a couple of times. wild and stocked brownies upto 4lbs but usually 1lb. Taste divine.

Also goto chatton fishery and pull out big rainbows, fun but in a Mcdonalds way.

My Aln ticket also only costs
£50 a season where as Chatton is £15 for a few hours.

I recently gave away a big box of all my fly tying materials. I wish I hadn't, they should have been donated here. Funny that you mention Pennine Lagers, I might be off up that way in a couple of weeks. Some absolute monsters in there! Incidentally, have you ever fished Raygill in Skipton? The quarried lake is superb and you can these huge missiles crusing around when it's hot. It's amusing how wise the bigger fish are and you can often see a dry fly perched on top of them during the dusk feeding frenzy being casually ignored. Fantastic fishery though!

my Wye day was great

no proper hatches, but still caught on drys and nymphs

4 rainbows (suspect that 2 of those may have been the same fish) and something like 14 browns

again, lost loads and missed a lot of takes

took some self timer photos this time, so when I've cropped off the fat bald bloke's stupid grinning head, I'll post a couple of pics of Wye fish for those interested in markings

No, I went for a walk up the valley to look at the glacier.  Our Arreiro (guy who guided our donkeys round) caught half a dozen small trout upto about 8cm, he should have walked up the valley with us as there were much larger ones in the upper lake.  They still tasted good lightly battered and shallow fried....

Trust a couple of poms to spend hours fishing for carp, 5 minutes away from the Pacific!

This is a mate landing a small one last weekend.

A wobbegong shark I landed last night off the beach. First one I've had.

Probably went about 20lb

Brilliant stuff BB! That carp was in great condition, I assume no one really fishes for them? Do they get much bigger than that?

As winter sets in I've been mainly concentrating on putting together good bags of small fish which don't really make for exciting photos! However, I did catch this cracking Roach the other day...

No, no one fishes for them. At least not as seriously as we have been. They grow to 20lb+ in there apparently. We've had them up to 16ish. They're all really long with big tails so they go hard.

Now the sea is starting to warm up, I'm changing my focus to kingfish. I had a metre plus kingy follow my lure in the harbour the other day. I was on 4lb braid to 6lb leader so it would have utterly smoked me, but it shows they're there.

Nice roach mate, we've been doing a similar thing and bagging up on small snapper. They fight like the devil, even though none of them are legal size. It passes the time while waiting for something bigger to come along.

First ever Barbel today. Only a yoof on the pole but fantastic sport at circa 1.5lb. Tough going on the match lake but managed two F1s, two skimmers and this bad boy. Slow to say the least but at least no blank and the challenge was welcome.

High tide at dusk tonight, so hopefully I should bag something. The water in Sydney is slowly warming up. 18 degrees and rising.

I hired a boat and took the old man out fishing on the harbour yesterday. Got a heap of flathead, snapper, Taylor and some whiting. Had a big dead bait out that got munched by something massive. Couldn't stop it on 30lb braid. I locked the drag on a shimano 6000 bait runner and it still kept taking line, even though i nearly got pulled over the side of the boat! Eventually, something gave and the 60lb leader snapped. Probably a big bull shark by the slow ponderous way it moved off. When I say big, I'm talking 500lb+. Probably didn't even know it was hooked. Scary what's swimming around in middle harbour!

BB, that's an insane tale! Have small Bull Sharks been caught in the area before?

It's winter now and all is pretty quiet on the River Aire. Not even breadpunch taking a stray dace or two.

The last productive session a month ago:

A decent sized perch

Small dace

I have no idea how something so small can eat something so big in comparison. A minnow.

Went fishing on Sunday and had a pesky heron for company all afternoon trying to steal fish off the hook! he actually made the session hard work as he trashed at least two rigs and almost ended up in my landing net on two occasions! At the end of the session I took the obligatory catch shot and as the heron started creeping closer, I thought I'd try and get a couple of shots of him. Now I failed to take into account that heron's can move very fast and that this was obviously one hungry heron...

BB, that's an insane tale! Have small Bull Sharks been caught in the area before?

Small ones don't seem to get caught. Big ones are spotted taking pelicans/ducks and bumping kayaks every now and then. I've never spoken to anyone who actively fishes for them although New South Wales fisheries do:

http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/sharkharbour.htm (http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/sharkharbour.htm)

had a pesky heron for company all afternoon trying to steal fish off the hook!

We get pelicans and cormorants doing that over here. We just feed the cormorants 2 or 3 small snapper and they disappear to sleep it off. The pelicans, however, are never full and you have to pass close to another fishing boat to lose them. Causes all sorts of insults to be hurled at you from the occupants, but its an accepted tactic.  ;D

managed a short winter grayling session on The Don this afternoon - behind Hillsborough College

six grayling and eight unsolicited trout - fly wasn't working, so had to resort to worm

the low sun even came out for a while - giving this weird glow to the fish as they left the water

a couple of herons and a sparrow hawk turned up to add a splash of nature

we are so lucky to have this sort of fishing in our city for free

Title: Re: Quality fishing pics

nope

that particular bit of river is in the middle of some work to protect the electricity substation thingy - big plastic sheets, scaffolding, sand bags and a massive pump in place - we didn't think we'd catch anything there, but it turned out OK.

in my opinion, the river in and around Sheffield has reached the end of being messed up by the work and is now starting to benefit from the changes - I have a good feeling about the coming spring/summer - the biggest fish may not be there, but what is there will do well

I think the plant life will do much better this year

no sign of the foreign crayfish yet; can't be far away...

Had a lovely family Easter weekend up in Teeside and despite being unable to get to Goldsborough Carr I discovered I was really close to Grassholme Resevoir which offers any method trout fishing at a very reasonable price (£13 after 2.30 for four fish). Bailiffs were dubious of my methods which made catching my limit (two rainbows and 2 blue trout) in an hour all the sweeter  :) By the time I'd packed up, all the locals were spinning where I'd been fishing!

I used a small dexter wedge on a light spinning rod, great fun. The biggest one was around 4lb by my reckoning...

Having made "one last cast" about 30 times I got this fine athletic specimen as it was getting dark last night

It gave a brilliant fight. Leaping all over and making really impressive slaps as it crashed back into the water. Light line, small fly, heart in mouth.

I've had a few like this recently (3 others in the last 3 weeks), just not in places where I could get a camera out

2 pints of Easy Rider to celebrate

I do like it when there's enough daylight to have a decent session after the kids are in bed

not a quality pic, but...

3 fish bag for just over 10lb

yes, that is a standard 40cm kitchen sink

had a day at Pennine Trout Fishery with Otter on Thursday

what a lot of fun

I "only" managed to get 8 fish on the bank - all about the same size as these three - lost a lot more and missed loads of takes

according to the regulars, it wasn't fishing well that day and normally it would produce more fish!

Otter hooked a couple of monsters, but was broken off both times - one was definitely a double - it stripped all his fly line and about 15m of backing before breaking him off

all fish were in great condition

I'll be going back

Title: Re: Quality fishing pics
Post by: lagerstarfish on July 02, 2013, 10:31:45 am
yes, fly only, but pretty much any fly is allowed - barbless obviously

for the catch and returns - no fish that are being returned are to be weighed or photographed, ideally unhook them whilst still in the net - the quality of the fish is amazing and rules about the care of them probably helps a lot

Ok, so last year we never got round to booking a sea fishing trip aboard Discovery (http://www.discoverycharters.co.uk/) and we've left it a bit late to get any weekends before September. However fishing for Tope, Smoothhound etc does continue into September and they have weekends available!

If I can get 5 people off here, I can get another four locally and I'd be happy to pay the deposit up front thereby securing the boat for that date meaning we could ask them to accommodate the type of fishing we want to do.

Off the top of my head, we'd be looking at about £30 a head but I can check this and get back to people if need be.

I can't do the weekend of the 20th and Discovery have the following dates available at the time of writing...

7th, 8th, 29th and 30th

Hit me up fisher folk...

For some added psyche, here's a recent report (http://www.wirralseafishing.co.uk/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=24596)...

Went on holiday to the Lakes and Scotland, there was fishing onsite so it seemed rude not to, caught a lot of Jacks and this little beauty, only 4lbs but we had a great scrap on a light spinning rod. I'd never caught Pike before so quite happy with it.

Also caught a huge Perch but in the pouring rain and I couldn't unlock my phone screen.  No, honestly...

So then we came home and I decided to give it a go locally with the whimsical notion of catching the six other species I'd never managed previously.

First up was a Tench, not this actual one, this was a few days later and a pound or so bigger
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BS3CUfXCEAAnR-t.jpg)

next a proper Bream, rather than the little skimmers that succumb all too easily once hooked (terrible photo sorry, over exposed, the fish moved and the camera lens didn't fully open)

Also caught a Rudd that day but didn't photograph it so here's a decent Roach instead
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BS3CtQcCYAErGEH.jpg)

Next up a Crucian, small (1lb) but perfect
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BTuKrUpCIAE6UDp.jpg)

Then after walking past a swim thinking "that looks a likely Barbel spot" too many times I eventually fished it and hey presto, only a baby at 2lb 9oz, and about half the size of the one I lost, but a Barbel nonetheless
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BUcn4AMCcAALGNE.jpg)

So that just left a Chub, a bit of research suggested Cheesepaste so I made some up and within seconds of my first cast using it I had a 12oz Chub on the bank. Then two days later I had a nice brace, the first about 1.5lb then this one tipped the scales at just over 2lb.

Quite happy with that lot for a few weeks effort, especially as I was told today that the water's not been fishing at all well lately. Might go after a decent Carp next, a PB of 6lb 10oz to beat, it's very possible and I'd be well happy with something that size.

A few of the nicer looking carp I've had this summer. All around the 17lb mark. Off to the River Wye this weekend for some barbel fishing, then carp fishing in France in a couple of weeks, if all goes to plan I'll have some pics of some monsters to post soon :)

If anyone goes to centre parcs sherwood with the family I very much recommend taking your fishing gear. I had 25 double figure carp over three evening sessions. Unbelieveable fishing.
Nearly all on freelined breadflake off the top. I'll try to get the pics on here soon.
Incredibly well stocked lakes and hardly anyone fishes them.

Met up with fatneck on Saturday, slow day but it finished with a nice pair of Chub.  Unfortunately they really didn't want to be photographed, lively little things.

@Jim - good effort mate! I remember heading to a center parks type place in the Lake District years ago and bagging some great carp! Surface fishing is also ace!

@Will - looking forward to the pictures dude and I feel your pain...

@Ian - was great to hook up! I did manage a couple of photos;

Good fish!

Considering a Wye trip lads - where did you stay/fish? Check Peter Drennans skills:
Drennan's Fishing Barbel on the Wye - Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o5wcN1U64c#ws)

I usually fish Dove/Upper Trent, though leaving it now until rains flush out the dead weed.

Cheers.

We fished the Sugwas Pool stretch, my mate booked tickets through the Usk and Wye Foundation at £20 a day. The river was extremely low and fishing was hard work in the day, as soon as the light faded it came to life. All 3 of us got snapped off on 10lb Fluoro Carbon leaders! I was snapped on my last cast of the trip, felt like a very big fish compared to the others that I hooked.

I think I've got the barbel bug now!

Yeah, they're great value, and Wye fish seem to have a rep for being the hardest fighters of the lot.

If you fancy an Dove/Upper Trent barbel session let me know. Been over with Richard at Billy Clarkes a few times - and learned a lot! What he don't know ain't worth knowing.

I would definitely be interested in barbel trip sometime. Let me know when you might be heading next and we'll see if we can sort something.

I have a ticket for Ravensfield Fishery, they have a big strectch of the Don at Kilnhurst. I think I might put a few sessions in down there as the barbel have reached double figures in that stretch now. Getting a double figure barbel out of the Don would be pretty special.

Some recent fishing photos...

First my bag of trout from Grassholme Reservoir in Teesdale the other week. All taken on float fished worm and tasted delicious!

Amazing fish and apparently, one of the hardest fish to hook and land given their incredible set of gnashers and proclivity for acrobatic fighting style. In short, probably not down to your technique Chris :)

Yeah, not a nibble from one in 4 days in Botswana, in spite of steel traces and all sorts of fancy spinners. All I landed was a tidy 3 spot bream (my brother the dedicate fisherman caught nowt), and had to make do with photographing hippos, crocs, birdlife and dragonflies.

He's moved on to better fishing grounds now though, and converted my nephew

Lots of good fishing oppurtunities and you could end up with a bit of a bargin! http://www.yorkshiredalesriverstrust.com/auction (http://www.yorkshiredalesriverstrust.com/auction)

Nice tench Fatneck

I caught about 60 tench over the weekend at Golden Valley campsite - mostly about 4 inches long (some smaller). Proper fish-a-chuck stuff in a tiny pond. Nothing over a pound, but a 1lb tench on the whip was enough excitement for me.

Got a trip planned with my youngest (10). His older brother is away with the scouts for 10 days so when asked what he wants to do instead he has come up with a plan of a weeks fishing to try and catch as many species of fish in as many venues as possible.

We are going in the camper and starting on the south coast somewhere around Lulworth for a bit of sea fishing and a boat trip then work our way back up north over 6-7 days probably finishing by casting a fly at Kilnsey (which is a great little fishery if your ever near it).

So i am looking for recommendations for spots we can go to. I want to include lots of types of fishing as it wouldnt be much of a challenge to go to a commercial every day. So looking for a good running water barbel and chub spot with camping maybe on wye/severn as it seams a bit of a con to catch these in a lake. Also a good natural lake for tench/ carp ideally that you can camp next to and fish through the night, and a good venue for a decent perch and small pike.

Also any good commercials that you can camp at, always good to have a bit of a bag up session every few days.

Just to complicate things more i will chuck in my boots and mat so i can grab a few hours bouldering where possible hence Lulworth and Kilnsey, so if any of the above are near decent crags even better.

Sorry if it's too late, but when my grandparents used to live in Dorset when we were nippers we did a couple of fishing trips in Poole Harbour, there are a few that run out of there. Used to catch a fair bit, mostly small stuff from us, but was some nice sea bass landed. Used to love it. I suspect there are dozens to choose from though.

I'm a member of Ravensfield Ponds near Rotherham. It's a beautiful little wooded valley with 6 lovely lakes. The biggest tench in that picture is probably around the 3lb mark. Great fun on light tackle.

Here's a couple of fish I've caught over the last few weeks. Pretty chuffed with them to be honest.

5lb monster from my only fluff chucking session of the year. I went to Penine Trout Brothel. had a dozen fish, mostly around 3lb. everyone else caught more than me

their fish fight well

fished buzzers under a CDC - experimenting with tying them on in-line using palomar knots, it's worked well for me and my shoddy casting technique and difficulty with finger co-ordination

start with one buzzer on the tip and as my casting became less shit I added one (between CDC and end buzzer) and then another

Great effort Rob!

Just to clarify - in effect you're eliminating the need for an actual dropper? This would have the benefit of meaning there's nothing to tangle around the main line?

yep

similar to a Hopper Dropper set up, but I recon mine would cope better with 2 fish on - no proof of this

you don't feel like your float fishing with a bright orange bung and there's always the possibility of getting one on the floater

So Ladybower opens to anglers on the 28th Feb and I'm keen to get out on a boat. Anyone fancy it? Not necessarily on the 28th but any time/date around then...

I'm keen. Not fished Ladybower for years.

Not too fussed about a boat, makes the day really expensive and you always end up casting back towards the bank anyway.

If there are a few of us it would probably be better to fish from the bank for the banter and general piss taking.

A great day was had by all on Saturday! Having changed the competition element from "most fish caught" to "biggest fish wins" I was a little disgruntled to catch the most fish but this was tempered by beating some far more experienced fly anglers :)

Nice, that's a loooong trout.

I'm hoping it's skinny due to temporary lack of food rather than it being an old dear on the way out

it did seem in very good condition apart from its girth

I noticed that Barlow Fisheries have given over one of their trout lakes to become a "specimen carp" lake. didn't see any action when I walked past

Barlow seem to have upped their stocking game on the trout lakes. I took the foolish/exciting step of using the place to find out how I could cope with bigger fish on a tenkara rod. 2.5 lb was just about doable (4lb line), but I felt that I was having to overplay them, leaving very tired fish by the end of the fight - took ages for them to recover.
hooked a very lively fish - probably similar size to others I landed; and was unsurprised when it broke me off on a hard run.
on heavier line I'd be concerned about the rod breaking before the line...
I went back to using a reel for the rest of the session
it was interesting to see how tenkara worked on small stillwater - if there were no fish bigger than 2lb, I'd definitely do it some more

That looks a great nights fishing. We blanked for the first time but i think its a hard venue we were on (Ellerton Park, Catterick), it wasnt chosen for the fishing.

My youngest has set himself the task of catching a 20 this year so fingers crossed. not many places to go in Northumberland although there are 20s in our local pond.

He also wants to catch a catfish so i have promised to take him to this place in June if he does well in his exams.

I know very little about carp fishing but learning and absolutely nothing about catfish.

That's brave tackling rainbow stockies in that style!, I bet it was great fun :)

You can fish for the little brownies in the various streams and brooks that feed Ladybower, I bet it would be a nice day out and a good change from nobbling the rainbows on big lures, hey Fatneck? ;)

Which trout lake? The bottom one? I spent a lot of time at Barlow when I was a kid, I even did my two week work experience there. I remember the bottom trout lake had some very big carp in, including some monster grass carp. Be interesting to know how big they actually were/are.

I know very little about carp fishing but learning and absolutely nothing about catfish.

Cats are beastly strong things! They are usually very hard fighting and seem to enjoy protracted fights... I've had them up to low 30's in France on a spare rod when mainly after carp and they are most entertaining. Primary thing to be aware of is the abrasive pads just inside the mouth, they feel like velcro and but can play hell with with hooklengths. I protected my knots with shrink tube when after cats - usually simple line-aligned knotless knot hair rig, strong forged Size 2 or larger Hooks, I used Kryston's Ton Up braid if I remember in around 50lb BS, 14-18in hooklength. If you are targeting cat's specifically you'll need powerful rods (I used 3.5TC NGs at the time, 15lb Pro Gold main line) and even then control was limited, reel with a good clutch, also a 42inch or bigger net especially if the lake has anything in the 50-70lb bracket as they are 4-5ft long! Ditto a large unhooking mat or a couple of medium sized ones. Ideal scenario is a mate netting so you don't have to fart about maneuvering the beast into the net, especially at night - be very careful on slippery or steep banks over deep water if on your own as you won't believe how hard they can pull even after 20 mins - only Sturgeon in my limited experience fight harder. If not already then being familiar with using a marker rod would also be handy to locate underwater features like bars, plateaux and deeper holes - TONS on the internet about how to do this - practice before you go if needs be.

Talk to the lake owner about best bait and loose feed. In France I used very stinky homemade fishmeal boilies (Nutrabaits Big Fish with Monster Crab, plus a few other bits and 30-40ml Salmon Oil/lb) in 25mm doubled up on a long hair. Soaking the boilies prior to use in oil from a tin of tuna is also good. Big (22mm (bored out) trout pellets are also good but need replacing every few hours especially if the water is warm, which can be a pain in the arse at 3am to a tricky spot, they also attract nuisance species and they may have been done to death.

Good luck and prepare to be amazed at the size of their gob's!

good session at Barlow after work

fished until 9.45

the resident pro (Steve) was most helpful in pointing me at the fish and gave me a few tiny buzzers for when my own scraggy hare's ear barely floating parachute killer stopped working

mayfly and sedges put in an appearance later to make things even easier for me

I landed 18 rainbows - another chap had way more in the same time

that place is on fire - Steve's recent PB is 73 fish in one day (allegedly)

they are clearly fucking up their stocking plan?

Steve is doing casting lessons, fly tying and general bailiff duties - if anyone wants an excellent introduction to fly fishing, head to Barlow

I'm not going to be able to get to get to sleep after all that excitement

@Gav - I know a couple of guys who've done well for cats at Lakemore. Off the top of my head they were using half tins of luncheon meat and mahoosive halibut pellets. Will tap them up for more info.

@Will - some cracking carp there lid! And I'll have you know all my recent trout have been caught on buzzers or dry flys! Had a good short session at Westlow Mere last week landing two fish on hawthorn imitations fished dry and managed a brief foray to Raygill last weekend and managed two good rainbows on  buzzers in an hour. I'm getting the hang of this fly fishing lark!

@Rob - Nice trout, where did it come from? Kind of assuming some urban Sheffield location? Only visited Barlow once and was coarse fishing but will definitely consider it if I'm in the area.

If we can drag Will away from his carp syndicate I'd be well up for meeting up for some fly fishing...

I was on the Trent on Friday night, the storm hit me about 2am and didn't stop until 5am. It was pretty terrifying when it was directly over me, all I had was a brolly for shelter.

I managed to catch 3 barbel and a 7lb 8oz bream!, I also lost 2 good fish, I think one was a carp. I didn't get a pic of one of the barbel because of the weather. Still no doubles, but I did match my PB with one at 9lb.

Oh and to keep this on topic, here's a mate of mine with a fat 'Bow from that trout brothel Raygill Lakes!

Yes! Get in!

I've only ever had small Barbel from the Don, getting a double out of the Don would be a great achievement!

What stretch are you fishing?

top end of Salmon Pastures

I would have fished longer, but was getting pissed off with all the rats

I was headed for the bit just upstream from the Stevenson Road bridge, but changed my mind at the last minute

Rob- Is this free fishing. Would love to get down there and as i am down in sheff during the week would be perfect for a few hours on an evening.

What did you catch them on? Could you get them on the float rather than the feeder/lead?
Title: Re: Quality fishing pics
Post by: Johnny Brown on July 15, 2015, 11:30:47 am
It's all free from what I can gather, as long as you can gain access. We used to fish attercliffe where you can get on easily from the five weirs walk. When I worked near the foundry there were always doubles under the bridge by tesco metro...

I'd be keen too.
Title: Re: Quality fishing pics
Post by: lagerstarfish on July 15, 2015, 11:53:26 am
yeah, free fishing

where that pic was taken would be great for trotting a float - the main channel (3 ft deep ?) is just over a rod length out and would give you a long trot

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/River+Don/@53.3885924,-1.4467667,21z/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x487bd61427e7b039:0x9f47afb4f4ea351e

park on Warren Street and follow the five wiers footpath (shows as a cycle route on google maps) - you'll recognise the portacabin in the background of my whiskers pic

I was fishing 12mm pellets to avoid the little grayling

Brilliant. I am away on holiday until August but will bring down my kit when i am back. Never really use my float rod up home so can leave it here.

First tenkara session of the year down in Ladies Spring Wood on the upper Sheaf - plenty of tiny trout, never caught a big one there - although a couple of spots just look like there should be a monster

first fish of the season - I landed 9, lost 4
(http://i64.tinypic.com/15ri446.jpg)

biggest fish of the session (yeah; monster!)

smallest fish (pretty typical for that stretch)

saw a kingfisher, dippers, a few mandarins

pretty fucking special to have free fishing in an SSSI

Title: Re: Quality fishing pics
Post by: lagerstarfish on May 09, 2016, 08:13:18 pm
it's easy, and I catch fish

definitely hitting takes that I wouldn't have noticed on a normal rig - either that or I get more takes - either way, good for me

I always enjoyed close range fishing most anyway

tricky in woodland

the presentation is satisfying even if I'm not catching - more so than other types of fishing - I find myself getting really into perfecting the drift for a certain pool only to be pleasantly surprised by a sudden take

Grassholme Resevoir which offers any method trout fishing at a very reasonable price (£13 after 2.30 for four fish). Bailiffs were dubious of my methods which made catching my limit (two rainbows and 2 blue trout) in an hour all the sweeter  :) By the time I'd packed up, all the locals were spinning where I'd been fishing!

any tips for Grassholme, Derwent or similar any method waters up there?

particularly interested in any way that families, kids and non fishing folk can have fun catching fish to eat

I'm likely to end up in the area with lots of kids (2 to 8 yrs) and would like fishing to be involved

Only fished Grassholme but have fished it quite a lot. Lots of people leger here and seem.to catch but I would recommend float fishing worms and sweetcorn. If you want to leger, get hold of some floating PowerBait and use it to pop up yer worms. If spinning I'd opt for small spinners and light line - great fun! I'm up there over Easter weekend and planning to try out some soft plastics....

mad scenes at Barlow trout lakes this evening

had the place to myself and in between a few nice rainbows and tiny browns I had three common carp

pretty strange for carp to be taking artificial flies this early in the season (two on buzzers, one off the top on dry)

luckily the lakes are free of snags and weed at the moment, so my #4 wt set up and a bit of patience worked out OK

at a guess, they were around the 4lb mark

if you want your small spinners to cast further - these are pretty good (come in different weights)

mine are more shiny than the photo

used them in the lake district so we could get small Mepps a long way out   - act as a bit of a wire trace as well in case something with teeth comes along

Cheers for the tip on weighted leaders too. I've been using these...

as mentioned in Power Club and sprayed across social media in general, I have had a couple of decent days spinning for pike at Hassop this week - 4 fish each day and my mate had 4 fish on the day he came

the classic Shakespeare Big S lure did the business

no pics for this, but with all the bad stuff going on in the world, I feel pretty lucky to have a head full of trying to work out how to tie my pike flies to improve my take to landing ratio

over 20 takes and even more follows this evening resulted in 4 little jacks on the bank - which is four more than nothing and certainly a lot more fish interest than usual

my latest plan is to tie a sparkly snake fly with a 2/0 hook at the back, using a continuous wire trace through the fly and 30cm to the leader

not really important, it keeps me happy and out of the pub

How are the pike flies working for you Lagers?

not doing enough, but it definitely works well having flies with hooks in different positions - front, middle or rear - depending on  how they are taking

if more than 1 hook is allowed, add a stinger - or something like this (https://www.seriousfishing.com/506201902.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwkqPrBRA3EiwAKdtwkxayevBOJpk0ugxzNZPd84I40AIzSehtTsJ--kfwxm0N5yVmVUXEBxoCObIQAvD_BwE)

I caught loads of chub in the Ardeche this summer - mostly in the 1.5 to 2 lb range, but a few 4lb whoppers

a few common carp and very few barbel (despite seeing hundreds)
