Got out with Millso last night to Perch Rock and managed my first ever ray! Despite Tom assertions that it should be accompanying him home for tea, I popped it back to grow into a monster...

Twas a good effort beast. I never had designs on eating that little fellow though. Difficult balance to strike with Thornbacks between fish size and pan size. Ray strike two this week fatneck?

I think I've got it wired now...

Another bumper night on the beach last night. Had a flathead, a salmon (australian), a shovel nose and a tailor (my first).

Got snapped up twice, by something very large last Friday night too. I suspect it was some kind of shark and to be honest, I'm starting to get apprehensive about the possibility of hooking something large and toothy in the dark!

That sounds like a night out in Swindon, you should be used to that  ;)

Glad to see you can use a keyboard. Using a mouse without opposable digits must be tricky though.

Get out while you still can! I knew Swindon was a bit shit, but moving somewhere nice has made me realise just how soul-destroyingly awful it truly is.

Which bit? Getting snapped up by something massive or hooking something large and toothy in the dark? Both are probably true come to think of it.

I was thinking the hooking something large and toothy bit, but now you mention it, the other is probably true too.

Caught my first pacific black bream last weekend. It's now chopped into shark sized chunks and sitting in the freezer ready for the fishing sesh tomorrow night. Lost something proper big last weekend too, so I've made up some new rigs. I've upgraded from 15 to 20lb flurocarbon and am now using a pair of size 6/0 cricle hooks.

Gertcha sharky!

Looking forward to hearing about this! Are you using Flourocarbon as a main line? I'm assuming so as I'm also assuming you'd be using some kind of wire trace?

Make sure you get photos BB!

I'm using 15lb braid as mainline with a flourocarbon hook length. Circle hooks generally mean you can get away without wire. Plus many of the sharks aren't of the tooty variety. Port Jackson's and shovel- nose sharks just have grinding pads.

Cracking fishing over the weekend. The grand is:

6 Part Jackson Sharks up to over 20lb
1 Shovel Nose about 7 or 8lb
1 Fiddler ray about 5lbish
3 Tailor all around the 2-3lb mark

The tailor are really exceptional fighters. If they were the size and weight of the Port Jacksons I'd have had a Hemmingway-esque battle on my hands.

Piccies of the tailor and Fiddler ray to follow.

A mate has started fishing with me now so I'll hopefully be able to get some better pictures. A picture of a fish lying on the sand in the dark isn't going to win any awards.

Woodside's been going mental! Tonight will yield some good results I'm sure but nobody else available so had to jib it.

No bans on tops off there either ;)

So has anyone bagged any decent winter cod/codling yet? Had a few small ones myself but there are plenty of good sized fish coming out including a 7lb 7 oz fish from the Liverpool side of the Mersey. Very encouraging.

If they wrote about these Mersey fish in the paper would it be a codpiece?
