I'm not sure how true this is, but apparently in Germany it takes at least a year to get a driving license - not sure if the drivers there are any better, but it does seem too easy here to get one. I was a shit driver when I passed my test.

I saw one of the Derbyshire Filth's "stealth speed vans" on the Snake a few months back. It was an old battered looking blue builders van parked untidily in a tiny pull-in spot. Only reason I spotted it was coz I was in a line of already slow moving traffic.

Wish I had.  I got done for 63 a couple of months ago.  Didn't actually realise it was a 50, not been down it for so long, and even then was as a passenger.  No excuse though, and 6 points has made more a lot more respectful of the limits!  Wouldn't mind at all if all the limits were sensible, and if everyone else stuck to them too.

I only got 3 for that one. Already had 3, took a wrong exit off a roundabout near Chesterfield, bleary eyed at 7.30 am. Didn't realise I was on the wrong road, thought it was 40 mph, was actually 30 and I got clocked by a gatso at 43 I think.

Ah I see, I thought the Derbyshire plod were strict, but that would have been a bit ott.

A few years back I got 6 after the Scottish rozzers clocked me at 100 on the M74, then exactly 1 month later got another 3 from Derbyshire for averaging 93 (or some other low ninety-something) over 2 miles.

3 years on 9 points was really horrible but it did teach me that there was little point in owning a really fast car on today's roads.

I thought you got automatically disqualified these days if you got caught doing a ton, or is that just an urban myth?

I always thought it was true Dave.  I got done doing 99.7mph on the M74 4 years ago, 3 points and 60 quid fine.  Since I sold the Impreza I've not been done (caught) again

Nah. You can usually bull you're way out of a lot if your job requires driving. I've worked with a guy with 18 points and a valid licence. Insurance is a problem mind...

A mate of mine just reached 12 points and was offered insurance for his not exactly sporty vehicle for £2,500.

Not automatic, but the sentencing guidelines suggest that it is a suitable sanction.

It might be different in Scotland, not sure. Also, i was zapped at 100 dead, maybe 101 would have been worse?

I think my case was helped by the fact that the guy in front of me in court was busted for doing 140mph over tens of miles - their were gasps from the assembled as his case was read out. After that I was small-fry.
