Windows XP versions (to dl)
May 15, 2008, 01:44:16 pm
If your looking for a good chopped down version of XP then look no further than HERE
a new version released a couple of weeks ago includes sp3 and all the usual refinements. I've been using this guys cut down versions for a while and they have always been excellent.
I'm just about to reinstall using this new version

Any idea whether this is ok on AMD processors - SP3 seems to have been having trouble with AMD

What is the final install size?  Wondered if it was smaller than the lite version I did for my eeePC?

If you want to do it properly then get yourself nlite and create the perfect XP install for your application. There are many other lite, skinny, naked XP installs around, some down to 100mb but with nlite you can tailor it to exactly what you want (which is what these guys do anyway).

That's exactly what I did without the SP3 stuff

This is all well and good if you have the time to do it.
I have been using this guy's versions for a few years now and have always been spot on (apart from not correcting US english to UK english but he's probably american anyway so I'll let him off)

The iso size is 200mb and the windows folder size once installed is 800mb (just finished now!)

My install was ALOT smaller than that.  I suppose it doesn't matter on a real computer, but space is of the essense with the eeePC

Only thing I've found missing is ie7 update but it comes with firefox instead.
It works fine with windows update as I have just updated to ie 7 and a couple of other updates

Sorry to be ignorant but what does a 'chopped down' version achieve exactly? That isn't meant to sound sarky by the way... What 'features' of normal XP are retained  / lost - and I suppose I may be about to answer the original question, but, does it give a significant performance boost?

In my case we're talking normal modern tower PC with an Intel core duo processor if it makes a difference...

I'm having problems with this new sp3 and with searching on the internet, I'm not alone. Even people with genuine copies of xp are having nightmares!!!

For now I would highly recomend people not to install or use versions with sp3 intergrated. I am going back to good old stable sp2 release for now

Well I've been using XP SP3 since it was a beta and I've not had any problems. Even in it's final incarnation I've had no problems. In fact, it seems like you have more than your fair share of problems with computers Jim.

If you're NOT Jim then I suggest getting SP3.

I'm also shocked you're not running a genuine copy of Windows!  :o  Both Vista Ultimate and OSX are genuine on my PC.  :-\

Well it turns out its not sp3 thats been giving me problems but its that new anti-virus I've been trying, Avast. So I'm going back to using this version and trying a different anti-virus
