Crags with bogs
February 25, 2022, 03:34:03 pm
So my guts are average at the moment, so I'm after crags in the UK with some kind of toilet facility nearby. I know I could just shit anywhere, but doing it repeatedly through the day when you know it might happen is a bit anti social. Bouldering/trad/sport are all good.

I'm mostly interested in yorkshire, but further afield would-be useful too.

The ideal place is somewhere like Brimham, but places like Malham would be ok too. The closer the better though!

Peak:

Stanage Plantation

Black Rocks

There’s are toilets at Miller’s Dale Station which is reasonably handy for Cheedale & Raven Tor

Dovestone Reservoir has toilets but they’re a bit of a walk from any of the Chew crags.

New Mills Torrs is in the Town Centre so there might be some sort of public convenience nearby.

I’ve missed out crags that have nearby pubs where you’d have to get a drink as part of the bargain.

Backcountry toilet?  Works on big walls.

I do with the UK caught up with the rest of the world and got more composting toilets built at popular carparks.

Most of the Colorado crags have pit toilets at trailheads. But with the big walkins I always carry wag bags just in case. Plastics bag with some charcoal in packs flat. Handy for emergencies

I wondered how long a suggestion of Scotland would take! Cheers for the ideas so far. Another one is Ikley with the cafe, and I assume castleberg must have some public loos nearby, if not then  a cafe raid would work.

Pub bogs are good to know too, but only if they are close enough...

I've shat in bags big walling, but doing that at giggpeswick whilst some punters wonder past isn't overly tempting. Maybe I should stick one in my bag on the future though.

Did you get arse covid from Will's board?!  :alien: :shit:

Big wall poop tube with a good supply of dog poop bags??

Also if you're somewhere less public and mostly based in one place, you could just dig one pit out of the way, keep trotting back to it to unload, and fill it in at the end of the day. Widdop Plantation sprung to mind for this. You'd obviously need somewhere with a "private" location for your needs that people wouldn't walk through, so moorland or woodland or somewhere with an awful boulder choke nearby maybe.

This isn’t an answer to dunnyg’s question, but it is related…

Chateauvert!

I remember being really impressed on our one holiday at Chateauvert, by the composting toilet they had installed below the crag. It was a proper decent wooden affair, where you pumped a pedal after you’d finished, which (from memory) moved on a conveyor depositing your deposit into the main pit and leaving it clean for the next person.

We were there on a warm October week, everyone on the crag was using it, and it didn’t smell at all. And the biggest upside was none of the normal badly disguised evidence of shitting which plagues so many crags.

It was 12 years ago that we were at Chateauvert and I had wondered if it might have been a passing fad. But apparently not. I’ve got a mate who was climbing at Chateauvert in the last couple of days and apparently the composting bog is still going strong.  :)

Now, why can’t we organise such a facility at some badly affected UK crags?  Surely the BMC could set an example at Horseshoe Qy and Bwlch y Moch….  :-\

Come to think of it, there is actually a toilet about 30m from the Epidote / Topaz cave in Wild Basin. No wall or privacy, just a white toilet above a pit in the woods by the boulders

Some further afield options:

Rowtor Rocks, Forest Rock and Parisellas Cave all have public toilets about 200m from the crag.

Dinas Rock has portaloos in the car park.

Some more further afield options:

Torridon has free camping toilets and even showers if your bowels go really badly wrong, just a few mins from the crag parking. And plentiful conventional bog on the brief approach walk.

I think there's toilets in a few of the urban Lancs quarries, but I'm not sure I'd be keen to use them :2thumbsup:

But to use them would a bit mean to the poor hippy that lives in there.

I don't recall ever seeing one! Unless you mean the quarry itself, of course :-\ ;)

Having said that, the Jumbles has a convenient cafe nearby. Bit of a locals venue though (aka classic Lancashire)

:) ahh yeah, seen plenty of crap in my time. Although this morning it was nice to see someone removing some fly-tipped rubbish from the lane up to Deeply Vale, so there are people that care... ;D

Anyone know where the nearest public loos to Biblins Cave might be?

Guessing services on the A40 and pubs in Whitchurch. Can you use the campsite though?
