No climbing sign at Anston
March 15, 2016, 08:29:34 pm
I dropped into anston after work today to see if apprentice wall was dry and found a sign saying amongst other things no climbing. Anyone know anything about the situation?

Was the sign at apprentice or by the main area?

I thought the parish coucil had been contacted a while a go and had an understanding of what climbers where doing in the woods. May be worth contacting the BMC with an email?

Seb has a pretty good reputation within the climbing community due to having been witnessed reading stuff before, even his very partaking of this forum strongly suggests he can read, so I for one see the call for photographic evidence way ott ;)

I'll get me coat.

Is there an access rep for that area? Seems like a call to that number is needed. Climbing as carried out by responsible users does not contravene either of the stated clauses. It's also arguable whether climbing counts as "in the control of the owner occupier". Plus the designation is principally with regard to the woodland rather than the crags.

It's probably you yoot. Might be worth speaking to Dolph first.

The sign is a fairly typical kneejerk response to folk's assumption that nature reserves and climbing are mutually exclusive, including NE staff. Typically dogwalking is far more harmful.

It is Natural England who have the say so. My experience is it depends entirely who you deal with. Some are sensible, others less so. I get the impression it is a lack of experience/ confidence that results in over-cautious restrictions. Likewise such folk are easily steam-rollered by management when a big event crops up.

You get a very good insight into their job/ the process on the recently repeated Tales from the National Parks, particularly the Lakes one.

SSSI designation carries no automatic restrictions as such but that is the perception. The full notifications are available on the web, and are usually well worth reading as you could easily scotch such nonsense as nesting Herring Gulls - they would not be likely to be mentioned. In my experience sites notified for botanical interest rarely involve species on the crag itself, and sites notified for geological interest are unlikely to be damaged by climbing. Being pre-armed with this information makes discussions much easier - most NE staff will assume you are totally ignorant of nature.

Most geologists see climbing as positive if anything, keeping the exposure clear. I was a little surprised to hear the relevant geologist couldn't care less about the bolts in Malham, but then it's a subject that tends to breed scant regard for the petty affairs of man.

This post from JB a while ago leaps to mind.

A few emails have been round the access team, but no progress as yet. Dolph is the most informed and has only just got back from Macedonia.

Don't stop climbing there; if confronted stay polite and explain you are not breaking any laws - many crags are SSSIs and NE are not opposed to climbing here. Climbers are not drinking, lighting fires, defecating and are likely discouraging others from doing so.

Having done some reading up on the SSSI notification, it seems that the protected species of interest are all part of the woodland floor, and are not specific to the limetone outcrops.

This is on the agenda for tomorrow's Peak area meet at Grindleford. Be good if activists are there
