Help Johnny Brown with his erection
February 12, 2016, 12:03:00 pm
JB will be after a few willing hands to help him erect the new Stanage pole to replace the previous one which was blown down and a few more to watch him get it up and supply video evidence.

This is a historic event. There has been a pole since at least 1550 and it may have marked the boundary between the ancient kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. It is a much loved landmark and marks the boundary between Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

There will be a trial run (date?) prior to the official event on the 17th April which is the 65th anniversary of the Peak National Park.

Beautiful thing.
It reminds me that in Siena's cathedral there are two wooden poles from the Montaperti battle of 1260, when a small Sienese army annihilated enormous Florence troops.
Good times.

It was a fundamental moment in Siena's history. Florence wanted to conquer Siena's territory and winning that battle meant that Siena remained independant as a democratic republic.
Didn't last long though.

Anyone go up to watch JBs erection be gingerly coaxed into an upright position and firmly seated in the hole?

We had great fun even though we were late so not not allowed into any pole rubbing. Must have been 500 or so folk  up there. Lots of good posing shots with the great and good (the hands holding high the left hand camera in the background may be mine).  We had invited someone from the weekend BMC AGM for his first day on grit... a bit cold but he seemed well chuffed with: a pole and its people; routes and EU discussions with one of his heros (a certain himalayan peak ticker);  and bouldering with Ron from FRCC, putting in a good determined performance whilst learning how hard proper outdoor boulder grades can be. Adam, as we would expect by now, was heading back up for the good light as we left to get him to his train at 6.

Thanks again for Henry,  Adam and co for erecting the climber and BMC  profile a bit further  by getting a woodie up in public.

Basically it was like this but more epic and with hundreds more DSLR-toting pensioners.

I'm looking forward to telling awestruck uninterested people "I helped put that up" for the rest of my life.  ;D
