Grammar, punctuation and spelling.
February 27, 2015, 10:03:20 pm
I always thought that ukb was about climbing.
That I could post a thing or two and be able contribute something positive to threads.

But I was wrong, it's all about English.

Yesterday to my annoyance a couple of ukb members criticised my use of English.
They ended up going off topic on an interesting thread.

I told them to man-up and set up a grammar, punctuation and spelling thread.
They haven't done this, they must be too busy correcting people's punctuation, grammar and spelling.

I thought I would set up a thread especially for them.

If you are going to criticise the use of English on ukb then post here, rather than taking over good threads with snide comments.

Hopefully not many posts will be made here.

Gaskins wept. Part of the fun of ukb is going off topic, being flippant, talking shite and taking the piss out of each other - hopefully in a respectful good-natured way. All of this shite-talking and childishness is well-balanced with plenty of info and knowledge from knowledgeable climbers. There's a welcome lack of people taking themselves too seriously. Lighten up, and if I caused offence please accept my apols.

Careful you'll offend someone with that statement?

Squat - 5x1.5BW
Bench Press - 5x1.25xBW

Stairs - 6 flights up and down carrying 100+lbs.
I'm still unconvinced that these are in any way relevant to climbing. Running up and down stairs with 30kgs on? To get better at rock climbing? All that's gonna do is make me stress fracture my leg again!

The point you make about time is a key one. If I were a full-timer (despite what dense thinks, I do actually have to work sometimes) I would tinker with more of this shit. But still not running up stairs with weights, or much benching, or squats.

If you give people enough rope they hang themselves.
Maybe the use of question marks is infectious.

I find the use of question marks infuriating here, there is nothing worse.
I claim my £5!

That sentence is supposed to be read with an intonation of incredulity, hence the question mark. If, however, I were to use a question mark on the sentence I just wrote, it would just read with a needless rising tone, which I find infuriating to read. Clearly some people don't mind.

Technically UKB isn't an acronym because it isn't pronounced as a word ;)

Or is it UK Bouldering?

And wouldn't that make the correct abbreviation UB?

Now I could of course criticise your SPaG here. But no. I'm above that.
Instead I'm to critique your choice of wording as I believe you missed an opportunity for greater impact.
Perhaps somewhat counter-intuitively repetition can actually be an excellent tool for 'hammering' a point home. Consider MLK's fame for having a sleep disturbance, by way of example.
Sadly your inconsistent ordering of the words for which SPaG stands, lost this potential for impact by repetition, rendering your post slightly less potent that it might otherwise have been.

Also, fuck you guys. Philosopher king? That's my crown, bitches!

I don't mind.
What might upset you doesn't really bother me.

There is a big difference between how people write and actually talk.
It is sometimes difficult to express things correctly when posting on UKB.

I think that in the big scheme of things on UKB, spelling, punctuation and grammar, although important shouldn't really matter too much.
Everybody makes mistakes.

If it upsets you then post items here.
Rather than cluttering up threads else where.

It does seem as though you have one rule for yourself and a completely different for everybody else.

Pete - With regards to the French philosophers, they always sent me to sleep when I studied them.
Too wordy for me, I would rather get a finger board session in!

Hope that everybody had a good weekend and thanks for the entertainment on this thread. :)

Nobody cares about your spelling, punctuation or grammar.
Barrows was winding you up.
Everybody takes the piss out of everyone.

Especially when, like some people, you moan at people doing deadlifts on one thread, then complain about how weak your legs are on another....

what Oldmanmatt said. jfdm no-one, including wheelbarrows, really gives that much of a fuck about grammar and shit - expect to have the piss taken and let it ride. We don't need a thread to complain about typos.. there aren't enough hours in the day to deal with Sloper's daily quota alone.

And seeing as this thread seems to be turning into the repository of randomness, I submit this picture.
