Following on from the Peak District National Park birthday thread here, 2014 is also the 50th anniversary of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO).

The Peak District is very well catered for with 7 teams making up the PDMRO:

Derby - website
Edale - website
Kinder - website
Glossop - website
Buxton - website
Woodhead - website
Oldham - website

All of these teams are run by volunteers and are on call 24 / 7.

Don't think that they just pick up punters either, I'll not embarrass anyone but there are some well known names who've had to call on MR services in the past. They're not just limited to the Peak District either, teams were involved in ground searches after the Lockerbie disaster and in the search for April Jones to mention just a couple.

Anyone who walks / runs / climbs / bikes etc. in the peak should consider themselves fortunate that these teams exist and that the service is free. If you see any of the teams out fundraising this year, perhaps consider donating a few quid  :).
