"Places to visit" forum

I don't know how much extra work it would involve but I was thinking last night about going on climbing holidays to places that are new to you.

After a lot of thought, I am quite slow, I had the idea that it would be really nice to be able to be able to read about other people's experiences and top tips about where to stay, whats good to eat e.t.c.

I know at the moment you can do searches to see what people have said about particular areas but could we have a specific forum where people give their recommendations for things to do/see/stay in a particular area i.e. Hueco, Bishop, Squamish e.t.c.

What do other people think? Is it a load of extra work (If so crap idea) and would anyone use it?

It would take me about 5 minutes to set it up, if a few people think it's a good idea?

Let me know - if nobody would use it then there's no point cluttering up the board, but if it'll be used then that's cool.

Its a pretty good idea and maybe worth a trial. Be nice to hear other peoples opinions of a place, the more obscure the better and maybe a few piccies.

Sounds like a good idea. Cant be less popular than the training and comps sections.

Sounds like a good idea to me.  Could use it for posting info about less visited places that are good and people might not know about, eg Goldsborough, as well as holiday destinations.

Shit that's fast, better come up with a report now then. I will definitely report back after my trip to Font if we go to some of the quieter areas

great idea, good way to amass some serious knowledge about a place from the people who've been.

My two pennarth would be that you could amalgamate an area's info from the posts into a written report (could go in the 'places' section?), chuck a few pics in...

I'd be happy to do a few if it was a question of finding someone produce it!

An idea: what about moving relevant posts from other forums to the places to visit forum...

yep, that could certainly be done. when the new site is eventually done (yes, I know you've heard it all before  :P ) it will have the ability for users such as yourself to write and posts articles directly to the site which would work nicely for this sort of thing.

Yes, absolutely -  I'll probably do that as and when I come across stuff.

a further improvement, being as its getting a little crowded and jumbled up in there (assuming people actually want to use it a resource for trip planning etc), could be to have sub-folders on a regional basis: e.g. UK, Rest of Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Down Under etc....

good idea Stu, but sub-forums will have until the next release of phpBB. There is a complicated looking mod that can be made to this version, but I'm holding back on any changes now as the next version will be out by the end of the year. That said, I'll re-check what's involved in the mod - have you done it on hongkongclimbing.com?
