Last Minute Ferries
June 27, 2012, 07:26:05 pm
Anyone got any knowledge on whether cheap ferries will be available in peak season if booked a day or two in advance?

Got to decide if im going to book a ferry back from France before we go out, while the prices are still fairly cheap, or book it last minute while we're out there to have some flexibility in how long we stay. Just worried that I might get stuck with astronomical prices in mid-August if there are no cheap last minute options.

Thanks.

Get the tunnel.

It was at least double the price of the ferry all the times I've looked?

£79 each way iirc... Bootable even on the day... Bank holidays and beginning / end of kids holidays excepted. Reasonable cost for short notice travel I'd say.

More expensive than ferry at the moment but you are right, it might be cheaper when booking short notice. Thanks, will keep it in mind.

Dover Eurochange is who I have used in the past with no issues - think I rang them from somewhere off the M25 towards Dover last time and got the booking sorted for the next ferry out a couple of hours later - it was something like £130 open end return IIRC.

I've never found the tunnel to be cheaper (although clubcard vouchers seem to significantly cut down the cost). Norfolkline (DFDS) are always cheaper and I've never paid anywhere near the costs quoted here.

I agree with Paul,

Book DFDS as I have booked 3 times this year and never paid above £80 and as little as £30 for a campervan.

Looked at all choices the last time and they were well under half the price of the rest inc the tunnel.

hope that helps

Do Norfolkline still only go via Dunkirk? Not worth saving twenty quid for the hassle imho.

DFDS (used to be NorfolkLine) also go to Calais now.

When I've used them its never been just 20 quid. Also, it rather depends on where you're going, non? The other benefit is that you stay off toll roads for longer.

Dunkirk may be less beneficial for Font but there ARE other destinations (and as Bubbs has just pointed out, they go to Calais too).

Cheers for the replies. Had already booked with DFDS to Calais on the way out as they are cheaper than everywhere else as said. Still not sure what it will be like for last minute peak season on way back but doesnt sound too bad so may just wing it.

There's an amnesty on fines until November so I don't think I'll bother when I go in August.

It could be argued they're a useful thing to have in the car anyway but French DD limits are different to ours so not worth buying unless you absolutely have to as they're not much use here.
