This gives a pretty good, though not very balanced, look at FPTP vs. AV.

Good that.

So now it's going to be nine days of getting bombarded with information and bullshit about this when I've already voted.

:furious:

I am hoping that the yes campaign gets it's arse in gear... Sadly I suspect if it's a no then it's the last chance for 20 years to change things..

I think No will win because we're a nation of idiots.

…but it still is a poor compromise

[And, in common with every other coalition policy, directly at odds with the (minority) partners' manifesto]

Quote
Come on people, what are we all doing to deliver the "Yes" vote?*

I spent an hour and a half today knocking on all the doors on my street and talking to peeps about electoral reform. It was very interesting. I was expecting most people to be FPTPosters but it was very mixed with no two matching points of views. The undecided and yes's outweighed the the nos, but that might expected in a liberal constituancy, and doesn't really mean much.

I was totally gripped about it before I started - English people don't knock on their neighbours doors on bank holidays to talk about politics, but it was good and most people seemed happy to talk about it.

I think being "Sam from number 52" made them happier to talk to me than to some wonk in a rosette.

I did feel a bit of a twat but fuck it. Better than pissing and moaning when the result is no and I did nothing to influence the outcome at all.

I mostly talked about if candiate A gets 25 votes and candidates B and C get 20 votes each, how can A legitimatly be called the winner when he has a minority of total votes cast? Low numbers, easy to understand.  Then the burning building analogy: a house is on fire and the candidates are inside. Choose what order you will rescue them in and who in fact you don't want to rescue. Quite simple really.

You see, I think this is rather unfair graphic - and symptomatic of politics.  It says "WHERE SHALL WE GO" not "WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DRINK".  The votes are in, and the post POPULAR location is the coffee shop.  Yes, they sell something different from what the other shops sell admittedly, but that wasn't what you asked.  Maybe you should have asked "shall we have a beer".

This is why I hate all these discussions.  Everyone's being a dickhead, everyone's accusing everyone of lying or twisting things yada yada.  Everyone's a cunt.  At least we can agree on that right?

[extended analogy]

The question may ask what venue is desirable (political party)
But the purpose of the question is to determine the drink (policies) that the voters want.

Unfortunately because of the system we have at the moment it is impossible to vote for the super hoppy drink that you actually want (since everyone else will vote for their own favourites) but what you can do is make sure you wont end up at a coffee shop.

If you only get to tell your mates that you want to get shitfaced then they might not pick a pub which stocks your drink of choice.

[/extended analogy]

I think the main issue is that everyone seems to be missing the main point.

The NO campaign is focussing on rather obnoxious propaganda campaign to attack Nick Clegg and complaining about a pretty insignificant amount of money. Instead of the problems associated with an increased number of coalition governments (and pointing out the current example is hardly fair imo)
The YES vote is doing a much better job, but I think they are not doing enough to combat the NO campaign.

Basically - if we change it we can have a looksee at how it goes, if we dont we will never get to see an alternative.
