Winter tyres...?

Got ours fitted on Saturday. the difference is unbelievable. I took a scenic route to work, avoiding the congested main roads and get some pics, great fun!!

felt like Norwegian stage of WRC (in my head anyway).

Ordered them on Kwik Fit online (cheaper than in local kwik fit) and went in at prebooked time and got them fitted - took about an hour got all 4 done as only having front two done reduces stopping power apparently. I think they are firestones, cost £280 fitted. It's a Focus Estate, may be more depending on tyre size.

In a 30 min walk around the block - I helped push 4 cars and one van out of parking spaces/over speed bumps... Often it just takes a little push and they're away.

Of course it does help that I'm in Hull and the steepest gradient within 5 miles is a bridge...  ;D

(The window was open when I was filming, the mistake I'd made was leaving left white balance on sodium)

Never seen anything like this and it's coming down heavily again now.

Fuck it, I brought enough work home on Monday pm to last me til Friday and if I can't get the car off the road by then, I shall not be attempting the bus / train. Worth losing a day's money to sit here in the warm!  ;D

Took Raf for a walk up to Graves Park earlier and there was plenty of snowboard / sledge action going on. He was happy trying to throw snowballs at me and falling over a lot.

I know we are saying never seen anything like it etc, but is this how it should be? Is this the type of weather we are supposed to get based on the location of the UK.  Has it just been exceptionally mild for the last 20 years or so, or is it just exceptionally snowy the last couple of winters?

I was discussing this with a climatologist at work yesterday (it was closed today). He said that the jetstream was in an unusual position - and noted that it had been in odd places in recent years (summer 2007 floods are widely attributed to Jetstream being too far south than usual). Certainly climate sims suggest more 'oddities' and 'extremes' in weather. What he also suggested was that E England getting snow showers off the north sea was not at all unusual, but that because it is earlier in the year, the higher SST's may mean more evaporation = more rain/snow.

He then went and plugged these numbers into his latest hot bit of computational hardware for climate prediction...

And told me that if the cows were all lying down in the SE corner of the field it would rain at 12noon on the 14th May 2011.

Actually, from what I know about it, the Summer of 2003 was more of a worry. This was reported as a > 1 in 500 year event (Leuterbacher 2004 IIRC) and when you see the pdf of the event compared to others its way off the scale...

My bro...the one who works for the met office in climate change and prediction [showing off ] said something similar, also said the system is pretty stable and likely to stay put for most of the winter, hence why I've just ordered four of these serious rubbers

So if it all melts tomorrow I'm sending him the bill.

I'm with JB, it's just not fair. You finally get proper winters over there after we've moved back to Australia! Bastard! All I had was 17 winters of dull, grey shit with the occasional bit of frost and odd snow shower. :furious:

It seems that our little corner of North West Devon is a little island of colour in a sea of whiteness.  No snow to speak of in Barnstaple/ Braunton/ Croyde but we can drive up onto Exmoor to get our snow fix - best of both worlds?

A colleague had the gaul to play the too icy to get to work card yesterday  if it looked anything like the photos above down here then maybe but I'm calling bullshit..
