Android 2.2
October 25, 2010, 08:14:58 pm
Has anyone got Android 2.2 on an HTC Desire on Orange?

Is it worth it?

How do I get it? Had a look on Modaco and got a bit lost...

You probably need to install a recovery image on your handset first (Koush/Amon-Ra etc)

You will then be able to install the 2.2 rom via a zip file.

I subscribe to Modaco Ad Free so you can bake your own custom roms and add/remove apps in the base build via the kitchen. Well handy... it's only a tenner.

Usually Paul posts all the instructions/info on Modaco, tis just a bit of reading  ;D

I'm lovin Froyo - my handset (Dell Streak) literally flies  :great: so much faster than 2.1...

Or for standard Android without SenseUI then these guys do well, loads of little enhancements to the stock Android code.

Here's some instructions for the Desire that covers rooting, installing recovery and installing the ROM:

http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Desire_%28GSM%29

The nightly builds are, for the nexus one at least, perfectly stable and contain all of what is going to be in the next release, I'd recommend grabbing the latest one and using that.

Once you've rooted it and installed the custom recovery you can chop and change what ROM you have installed very easily.

2.2 was supposed to be available for Legend, Desire etc in September. I really don't want to start fucking about rooting my phone so I'll wait for now but it's annoying as 2.2 is supposed to be excellent.

HTC were useless when it came to the 1.6 update, which became the 2.0 update, which finally became the 2.1 update for the Hero.  It was released about 8 months after they initially said it would be.  I've got a Nexus One now, which is basically a Desire but branded by Google without the HTC layer on top.  When Android gets updated so does your phone because you don't have to wait for HTC to do their bit and also the Operator to do the branding crap they always do.

Most phones I've had anything to do with have been quite easy to root, but the Legend sounds like its more tightly locked down by HTC and is (a bit) more of a faff to do.

Unlike Vodacunts (and possibly Orange/T-Moblie) there isn't any O2 branding on my Legend so presumably it's just waiting for HTC to get their finger out.

Faff or not I don't think it's a good idea for me to start fucking about with the OS of my phone. I'd only knacker it and with the warranty voided I'd be screwed! It's not as if I'm not happy with 2.1 just 2.2 is supposed to improve battery life and lots of other good things. I'll be patient.....

To be honest the best things about 2.2 are having flash and the speed increase (better jit).

The easiest way to root your phone is to use Universal Androot but it seems this does not work for a few HTC devices (Desire included).  :(

Otherwise most custom roms come pre-rooted... go on take the plunge and upgrade, you can always put the stock rom back on if you need to send your phone back for a repair etc.. am pretty sure HTC stick their own bollocks apps on there anyway. I have a vanilla version of Froyo on mine, absolutely no branding or shite whatsoever..  :great:

Which version are you upgrading from and was this pushed to your phone "Over The Air" or are you doing it via update/sync utilities on a computer?

Wifey is still stuck on 1.5 from Orange and I suspect its because she can't be bothered to do the update manually.

Just got an HTC Desire, should the OS update be automated or is there an option I need to do manually to check if it's up to date?
Can't figure it out, I'm a technological numpty.

Recently got a Desire on Three, generally pretty pleased with it. It's on 2.1 at the mo and Three/HTC are dicking about with the release of 2.2 months after most got it. They released it but it had a major bug that disabled the Market! So they pulled the update, Three have released the code back to HTC for them to push out (thought it would be other way round but apparently not)

Looks like we might get it just before everyone else get 2.3 Gingerbread! I for one was amazed that there is no GDocs intergration with Android! Lets hope they are working on it...

My biggest surprise with Android is that there is no Chrome browser, the stock browser in 1.6/2.1/2.2 looks and feels nothing like Chrome and there is no sign of it coming in Gingerbread/Honeycomb... Xscope is the closest thing and you have to look for the apk pay for that  ;D

Is it all that surprising?  Why hack a computer programme to make it run on a phone, instead of builiding a lighter, faster application from scratch? There's so little to it that it would probably have been much more work!

As far as the "look" of chrome, well, the both the internet app and chrome are fairly minimal, so what would you change to make them more similar?
