The Knowledge, Sheffield and Peak

Locals only I'm afraid but let's have the low down on the places for really good local food and independent shops.

I'll kick of with
J H Mann for fish, Sharrow vale road
Silver Hill Larder for cheese, at the shops on ecalsall road near cater knowle road.

there's a decent farm shop in rivelin valley: http://www.coppicehousefarmshop.co.uk

also a good local icecream purveyor: http://www.ourcowmolly.co.uk

good ale shops - that one on archer road, and the dram shop at commonside.

You're right about Whirlow, I just got a really nice 28 day dry hung top rump joint for £12.60 (That's about 3lbs in weight).

The real meat shop is even more expensive than my old butcher (Aubrey Allen) and their quality is substantially sub standard when compared with the cost.  The same goes for Chatsworth.

I'm yet to try the butcher mentioned by Fatdoc but they sound serious.

Whirlow is very highly recommended by me too. Its just behind our house too so we now buy all our meat and eggs there. Not super cheap, but great provenance and way tastier than most meat or eggs. The pork is great, as are the pork pies and sausages. And the beef and steak is fantastic as Sloper said.

In fact we are having legs of lamb from Whirlow tonight.

If its something specific that you want it would be worth checking by phone first perhaps as they sell out pretty quickly and don’t have a lot of some stuff (it depends what’s been slaughtered recently). We tend to go round there at the weekend and just buy whatever they have killed recently.

For smoked bacon, pork & garlic sausages, kabanos & pork pies (do I detect a pork theme?), Kempka's opposite the Abbeydale Picture House. Lurvely.

Heatherhill Farm Meats in Dore is excellent - had a giant loin of pork from there recently which I thought was a bargain. Nice people too.

Meat: Roneys (great butcher and the best sausage sandwich around), Arrow Farm Shop near Worksop (own butcher, nice veg and other goodies), Chatsworth Farm Shop (also good fish & cheese but all very expensive).

Boldocks the (excellent) fishmonger also do wild rabbit in season.

Boldocks is on the main drag in Woodseats -

Apparently he supplies some of Sheffield's better restaurants.

He gets the fish fresh by driving to Grimsby (or somewhere over there) every morning apparently. He ( I think he's called Pete) also tried to retire a few years ago and came back because he loves what he does so much. Then again he does have the numberplate 2COD  :)

He's genuinely into what he does and will give advice on how best to cook. I often just ask him what's best today and take his recommendation.

yeah, he'll also get you want.

I must recommend the halibut and turbot.. oh yeah... and those rabbits!! the lobsters he brings back live from the east coast and then boils up on the premises.. He'll sell you them live if you can convince you know what you are doing - this takes some convincing.

Another cash only shop...it's all a bit dodgy round my way..

I went to Ryalls this morning and have to say that I'm impressed by his quality, knowledge and price, fillet was £27 kg.

Now for the real tip, silver hill larder have some brie stuffed with truffles at £30kg and it's rather good!

Paul seems to have the right idea, he's looking at getting a supplier of veal and I think he'll really move the place on, for meat of such high quality it has a bit of a 'proley' (in terms of the range of produce) feel, what would I give for the chance to buy some veal sweatbreads, the ingredients for faggots and so on.

Fresh truffles at the farmer's market in bakewell today and for a very reasonable £150kg almost a YYFY!

Fresh truffles with scrambled eggs tomorrow!
