The Knowledge, Sheffield and Peak
December 11, 2009, 11:08:46 am
Locals only I'm afraid but let's have the low down on the places for really good local food and independent shops.

I'll kick of with
J H Mann for fish, Sharrow vale road
Silver Hill Larder for cheese, at the shops on ecalsall road near cater knowle road.

there's a decent farm shop in rivelin valley: http://www.coppicehousefarmshop.co.uk

also a good local icecream purveyor: http://www.ourcowmolly.co.uk

good ale shops - that one on archer road, and the dram shop at commonside.

You're right about Whirlow, I just got a really nice 28 day dry hung top rump joint for £12.60 (That's about 3lbs in weight).

The real meat shop is even more expensive than my old butcher (Aubrey Allen) and their quality is substantially sub standard when compared with the cost.  The same goes for Chatsworth.

I'm yet to try the butcher mentioned by Fatdoc but they sound serious.

Whirlow is very highly recommended by me too. Its just behind our house too so we now buy all our meat and eggs there. Not super cheap, but great provenance and way tastier than most meat or eggs. The pork is great, as are the pork pies and sausages. And the beef and steak is fantastic as Sloper said.

In fact we are having legs of lamb from Whirlow tonight.

If its something specific that you want it would be worth checking by phone first perhaps as they sell out pretty quickly and don’t have a lot of some stuff (it depends what’s been slaughtered recently). We tend to go round there at the weekend and just buy whatever they have killed recently.

For smoked bacon, pork & garlic sausages, kabanos & pork pies (do I detect a pork theme?), Kempka's opposite the Abbeydale Picture House. Lurvely.

Meat: Roneys (great butcher and the best sausage sandwich around), Arrow Farm Shop near Worksop (own butcher, nice veg and other goodies), Chatsworth Farm Shop (also good fish & cheese but all very expensive).

Boldocks the (excellent) fishmonger also do wild rabbit in season.

He gets the fish fresh by driving to Grimsby (or somewhere over there) every morning apparently. He ( I think he's called Pete) also tried to retire a few years ago and came back because he loves what he does so much. Then again he does have the numberplate 2COD  :)

He's genuinely into what he does and will give advice on how best to cook. I often just ask him what's best today and take his recommendation.

I must recommend the halibut and turbot.. oh yeah... and those rabbits!! the lobsters he brings back live from the east coast and then boils up on the premises.. He'll sell you them live if you can convince you know what you are doing - this takes some convincing.

Another cash only shop...it's all a bit dodgy round my way..

Now for the real tip, silver hill larder have some brie stuffed with truffles at £30kg and it's rather good!

Paul seems to have the right idea, he's looking at getting a supplier of veal and I think he'll really move the place on, for meat of such high quality it has a bit of a 'proley' (in terms of the range of produce) feel, what would I give for the chance to buy some veal sweatbreads, the ingredients for faggots and so on.

Got to agree with most of the recommendations on here. Roneys for meat - while our oven was being installed we lived on their roast pork sandwiches - awesome. Also never had a bad piece of meat from them.

Tried FD recommendation Ryalls a couple of months back - great bacon, need to go back there.

Mann's Fishmonger on Sharrowvale is awesome as well.

But Fancie cupcakes I have to disagree with - had one and it was awful - dry, did taste of anything. Just make your own - way cheaper.

Border View Farm shop at Bradway; a few Christmas' ago my wife went to order a duck and he looked outside the window and said 'yes I can see a good one for you'.

Liberty foods on Baslow Rd as you're coming out of Totley.

There's a farm shop in Dronfield Woodhouse that's quite good and does buffalo burgers which are meant to be good cause they are low in cholestrol or something. They do nice pies too.

The butchers in Hathersage near the Little John.

Having said all that because it's fresh you sometimes go and they may have run out of somethings.

Not heard much good about this place tbh. Was talking to Underground the other day about how they just buy a lot of stuff in from normal wholesalers and it's not as "farm" as you'd like to think.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Beanies in Crookes.
Really good grocers with loads of variety. They sometimes have a range of exotic mushrooms, such as morels. And at the moment you can get this amazing french garlic, where a bulb is about the size of a fist. Huge cloves! It's awesome. Most of the vegetables are cheap if they are in season. They also sell loads of other stuff as well but some of it is quite expensive. If you can't get hold of an ingredient, it is usually worth trying in Beanies.

Not been to Beanies since my student days - it was good then, good to hear it's still going strong.

Since moving to Nether Edge  we've started using Pops supermarket - great for the more unusual Indian / Asian ingredients, and cheap herbs / spices etc. The array of veg out the front can be fascinating to work out what everything is.

I find Beanies to be quite pricey myself (know a few people who used to be part of the co-operative).

Good quality food though, and the pulses are cheap as beans  :P

Shah's on Abbeydale Road is where I get the vast majority of my spices from - really good for garlic and chillies as well.

I don't know but you should never pay more than £4 for a rabbit and £9 for a hare.  remember to try and get the livers with your rabbit.

The cvnts in bakewell wharge about £6 for a rabbot and they look terrible.

If you want good rabbit recipes let me know.

Boldock's bunnies usually cost £5 to £6 but they're great quality. They'll section it in front of you for no extra charge.

There's a butcher in Eckington which advertises them so I might try there as it's nearby.

I feel a little uneasy about eating hare tbh, bunnies are so plentiful I'm not as bothered.

Post some recipes up if you can be bothered - I usually just soak overnight then make a veru slow cooked stew.

Rabbit makes great terrines, esp with black pudding and foie gras.

A rabbit stew with cider and dumplings is a thing of beauty.

Try a dry marinade with smoked paprika, lots of thyme and garlic then, brown off and cook with lots of onion in red wine, chucking in half a black pudding finely chopped and some butter beans half way thorugh.

Hare is great forget all the nonsense about them pairing for life, they'll fuck like a crack whore in need of a fix.  When jugging your hare make sure you use a bit of good >70% chocolate to help emulsify your sauce and use a good reduced wine, cahors or similar.

Jugged hare is somehting everyone should try at least once.

Just check they're wild cos the rest of his stock is nowt special, just from Towers Thompson. I spotted frozen chicken breasts from Iceland under his counter once, no kidding.

The guy at Unstone is good for pork when you're passing, he has a herd up at Hundall.

Well it seems as if Ryalls just off the Chesterfield Rd is no more.

Anyway, as a consequence I used the real meat company around from Percy's old gaffe on the Bakewell road and was very impressed with their quality and price.

Good beef, although another two weeks hanging would improve it still further for a song.

Get down with it kids.
