Rays a plenty as well by the sound of things! On the subject of bass, a four pounder was caught at Mariners Wharf (!) last week and plenty are coming in off the Hoyle bank as well. I'm psyched, we'll have to sort something out!

Anyway, here's a bad photo of my best fish of the Lleyn trip...

And here's a photo of the quality rays coming out at New Brighton...

And the Starry Smoothound...

Ha ha Fatneck you look as browned-off as that fish!  What is that, a wrasse or somesuch?

Yes, a ballan. I look browned off as I'd just spent two minutes getting the hook out with a disgorger that was just slightly too small!

I hate leaving hooks in fish and will go to great lengths to avoid it happening, probably to the extent that I miss a lot of bites striking too early!

Cracking fight off it on a light-ish carp rod. There's huge potential for a record wrasse around the Lleyn...

Took a thornback ray around the 5/6lb mark last night at New Brighton beach with fatneck. Fought like a trooper! Lost another about 10 mins later after striking and playing briefly. I can't get photos off my phone Si if you can mail or post me some? Off again tonight for bass!

Ah yeah, leaving hooks in fish is shit, as is keeping on land too long.

Recall my first Tench.  Think it was a size 12 or 14 w/ a particularly pronounced barb.  Took ages to remove the hook, I had to return it to the water a couple of times for it to recover.  After that I moved to barbless hooks.

Beat me to it!
Sorry about the quality of the second one, I unhooked Tom's fish in between the photos and I think I got a bit of slime on the lens of my phone!
Psyched for more Raymond action on Thursday!

I wonder where the anglers who don't kill their catch stand on the issue of cruelty and whether they were in favour of the ban on hunting mamals with dogs?

As far as I'm concerned i don't care if it is cruel, your right to fish exceeds the pain and suffering caused to a bloody fish.

Off on bass quest today. I hear reports that Richie Crouch will be making his inauguration on the beach this afternoon. Undoubtedly trying to "burn all you fishing punters off".

Bailey's a funny guy.

This cruelty to fish card is nonsense.  I'm routinely cruel to humans & I don't get too many complaints.  Pretty clear to me:  If you kill it, make sure someone or something eats it (or at least has sex w/ it) outside of that, I'm not too fussed.  Bigger fish to fry etc..

If it's dead at least let it have died for a reason? Sounds like perfect logic to me.

It's rare to be able to kill something w/out being cruel, if you can, then you're probably a vet.

I hope you're not going to extrapolate that it's OK to torture animals as long as you eat them afterwards?  I rarely if ever allow meat in my mouth - and the times that I do are none of your business  :-[ - but I'd not even GO fishing these days unless I knew that someone would eat what I caught.  Dunno, maybe I'm odd, but I feel the urge to kill everything I catch.

Oh hell no- that's completely wrong, and I consider most farming methods to be mild forms of torture. You say you hurt humans- but humans have the choice to do something about it, even though most of them probably don't- whereas farm animals can't do anything about their treatment or captivity unless you've been on the Orwell...

You're a militant vegetarian.

EDIT ~ I can't believe I've wasted my 6000 dose of bum-drivel on the above.  I'm off.

Shut the fuck up both of you, go fishing, catch some nice edible fish, come back and post photos of them. Simple!

Blimey! You can't do anything these days without some bleeding-heart, tree-hugger claiming it's cruel.

Anyway, must dash, I've got to polish my ivory handled whacking stick with whale blubber before the seal hunt this afternoon.

One wings worth was eaten last night by a friend's parents. Very good apparently. The other wing is being given some different culinary treatment I think with some fish spices from India.

Anyone else doing much sea fishing at the moment? I'm hankering for a juicy bass.

I recall Skate being disgusting.

I found it to be pleasant, lightly poached so that the meat can be lifted from the bony wings.

Tried some battered skate when last in Whitby at the Magpie Cafe as friends had the platter for "two" (could easily have fed four) which had four large pieces of battered fish, one of which was Skate.  Quite a delicate taste from what I remember

I went for the trio of lemon sole, salmon and pan-fried king scallops  8)

Highly recommend the Magpie Cafe if you're ever in Whitby, right across from the fish markets.

Did you ask if scallops were hand dived?? Although there is no way to prove they are. it's always good to ask.

Looks gorgeous though.

My rod has been dusted off of late. Had a couple of sessions trying my luck in the murky depths of the Bristol Channel, but no joy yet. What bait have you been using Tom? I've been trying mackerel harvested from the Devon seas, but haven't had a single bite yet. Any other ideas?

I managed to catch a grey mullet off Berry Head by foul hooking it and pulling it in backwards. Didn't think much to its eating credentials though.

Also, there's a (light-hearted by his standards) article by George Monbiot. Got me psyched. Anyone got a kayak going cheap?
