a read of this thread and my long lingering cold, whilst depressing and debilitating, doesn't seem all that bad....

here's a pic of my "extra" bone which detached itself from my talus (I think '95/'96) - there's also a fracture on another bone (Lateral Malleolus?), so I am now in a pot and am thus not covered by my car insurance

parenting, work and child care are becoming more difficult

as you might expect from seeing that photo - the rogue bone chunk is stopping my ankle from closing the angle less than about 100 degrees

I am investigating mobility scooters - ideally to get Occupational Health to provide one.

another couple of weeks of immobility and comfort eating and that's exactly how I'll look - not so clean shaven, minus the cap and with a can of Super in the drinks holder

had a CT scan and seen a specialist - all of what Minor Injuries said was wrong...

lateral malleolus is not fractured

talus break is not an old one

CT scan shows that half of the talus has crushed to rubble - trying my best to weight it and increase range of movement will not have been helping this

going for re-constructive surgery on Tuesday

outlook not good

however, I've climbed with plenty of folk who have been total write-offs at some point....

Shit - hard luck mate.
Hopefully it will be a quick recovery.

Is that directly from the fall on Saturday or is that from previous damage or a combination ?

all from Saturday

the previous bone damage was merely a theory put forward by Minor Injustices to fit in with their other beliefs

Christ Lagers, that's bad. It didn't seem like a bone crushing fall! Maybe an ankle sprainer.. At least you have them doing something proper about it rather than Wang it in a pot and see what happens after 4 weeks.

get well soon. see a specialist

glad you heeded the advice.

fingers crossed for you buddy - hope it gets sorted ASAP.

In reply to jasper - A&E or minor injuries is essentially a triage service, if they see someone with a cold then they can discharge with impunity, but complex fractures  or the like its better to see someone who knows what they are talking about.  I spend half my life dispelling myths and rumours that have been uttered as gospel by A and E, ambulance technicians, junior doctors, consultants in other specialties, GPs etc. (how does it feel from my ivory tower - fucking shit)

There is a reason the spcialist knows what they are talking about is because that is all they do, they've done >5 years in specialist training on top of their basic training (4years +5years at medical school) and most likely an md or a phd. A junior doctor in A and E or a nurse practioner in minor injuries will have a fraction of the knowledge, they are there to make sure you don't die, sort out your pain and facilitate a smooth journey toward someone who knows what they are talking about.

and what fatdoc said - these ankle injuries can be a twat to diagnose and unless the x-ray is barn door then they will often need to do a CT

I weighed myself this morning at 95kg - that's without clothes, coat, shoes.

I'm trying to get rid of the Borat like image of Shark carrying you without clothes or coat on.

At the time it seemed a little odd that Shark took all his clothes off... I thought it was to save weight.. :/

We're supposed to be flying to Tenerife on Friday morning. Mrs S just called to say it looks as if Raf may have chickenpox.

I don't believe it.

No way you can just apply make-up to cover the pox and take him anyway?  Seriously, that sucks nuts though...
