Tom's Cave
May 27, 2008, 08:47:58 pm
just wondered if this place was worth a visit - wandered past it on the way to doing some mileage at horseshoe this weekend but didn't get time to look closer - wondered if it would be a wet weather place....

Re conditions, def worth a look - in heavy/ prolonged rain water runs down onto the holds under the roof and condenses on them too. can be in surprisingly good nick though when u least expect it. As regards whether its worth a visit, not everybody's bag but u can def get a good workout there and it was good enough for Moffatt in the 80's/ 90's! usually refered to as Tom's Roof.

See Ru's Peak guide, the Peak Bouldering Rockfax and before that, Al William's bouldering guide from the early 90's.

being totally thick - didn't put 2 and 2 together - though stoney would be further down the valley as for the route guide

 :-[

edit - actually am I being thick.....
small cave just opposite the parking for horseshoe quarry way past the Eyam turning as you head away from stoney.....
have a feeling we're not talking about the same place - I'm very possibly wrong but.....

Do you mean Tom's Roof or Tom's Cave?  The roof is in Ru's guide, not sure if the cave has ever been in a guide.
There was a thread on here about it previously, I think.

If Tom's Cave (as opposed to Roof, confusing!!) is the one by the road where Polish Dave's new 8a+/8b is then I don't believe there is a topo or indeed many climbs other than this problem or maybe a 7c lip traverse? It is certainly not referred to in any guide.

Andronicus.
Don't think there's a lot there, and it's quite tough.  But I may be wrong.
Looks good though:

1x 8a+
1x7c
+ a few easier things, and maybe a traverse. I wouldn't bother going just for the easy stuff mind.

Although, to add to the confusion, Jerry did also train in Tom's Cave extensively in the 80s.

What did all these people do in there? What did Tom do?

Hannibal and Andronicus needed quite a bit of cleaning and trundling, as far as I know, so they probably didn't play on those. The traverse of the back actually has a few interesting moves and might just scrape in at 7a (don't quote me on that) - maybe they did this? There are a couple of problems up the left wall at 6a-ish, and eliminates/easy up problems on an overhanging section on the right, though again, this has had quite a bit of loose stuff removed to achieve its current state.

Must admit I'd never heard of it until recent developments. I think Dave's right.

As (woz) is fond of saying, there are only two grades, with shit or without. Maybe I'm misquoting. Anyway, 8a.nu needs to catch up with shit.

Last time I visited said cave, there was a 'fresh mound' beneath Andronicus. Someone was obviously pissed at getting shut down...

Perhaps a dog had been nesting there and laid an egg?
