Tasmania
February 20, 2007, 06:21:48 am
Off to Tassie for 10-days in mid-late March. Not really a climbing trip (meeting up with my folks down there, they're dong the retirement round the world trip thing) but will sneak my boots and harness into the luggage anyway.

Anyone been and have any tips for who, what, where, and when? Already have Climb Tasmania and the bouldering guide but would be good to get some first hand knowledge.

Also after beta for non-climbing stuff if anyone has suggestions

cheers

Stu

Check with your brother if anyone keeps in contact with that lass he shared a house with in Plymouth. She lives (lived) there with Nick Hancock (old SW based climber, not the "comedian").

Other than that, the stuff in the Simon Carter book looks excellent. In March it should still be pretty warm and humid though, although heard there's some good surf. Tell your parents they should plan things more considerately. :)

From what I've heard its worth checking out both Oatlands and Coles Bay for good bouldering.

Check the guides:

I believe the two guys to contact for the good stuff are Garry Phillips and Jake Breshenan.

Maybe through here:

Had a look at oatlands when i was there and thought it looked pants to be honest, it was raining but looked like substandard northumberland to me. Did couple of days on the Freycinet penisula which was good fun but not world class. Also did some sport climbing up north near launceston in an old volcano and on Colgomerate at Adamsfield which is closest to Hobart but in the middle of a temperate rain forest, raining and cold so felt right at home!

didn't think Oatlands was that bad to be honest - although a mat and spotter would have made it more fun:

Also managed a few hours playing at Bicheno, which was ok:

didn't manage to get to the climbing on Freycinet as the car kept bottoming out on the 4WD track to get there (we didn't have insurance for non-paved roads so gave up in the end). However, Wineglass Bay (No. 4 beach in the world according to Lonely Planet) was nice:

Rest of the trip was spent doing touristy stuff with the misses and my folks.
