Internet Explorer 7
October 11, 2006, 03:01:45 pm
Just downloaded an IE update (v7.0.5700.6 to be exact) and its being a bit of a pain in the arse, basically java based sites that have buttons that open new windows dont seem to work anymore they just open it over the main page, which ends up logging you out (with some sites having a time delay before you log back in), this is a bit of a pain with online banking and other such stuff, anybody got any ideas/fixes? Downloading a release candidate probably wasnt my brightest hour, unfortunately a non-IE browser isnt going to be ok for my other half, so no firefox or anything for me. Thanks for your time.

Why not?

Can't you just download the latest release of IE and re-install?

My other half soon got used to firefox. They don't like change, but force it on them with stories of viruses and they might grow to like it...

There is an IE Skin for firefox, but no idea whether it's up to date or not: http://themes.mozdev.org/themes/ie.html

if you can answer that i'll be impressed! because I certainly can't.

might just have to go down the route of un-installing it and going back to 6, however I kind of like the tab system.

But surely after an hour on FF she'd be converted?

What about Opera?

Surely u can have both firefox and IE7 installed, i have both as certain websites can only work in IE (like o2 accounts as its got some weird flash based frames)?  Then you can use FF and and leave her on her merry way with using IE7?  If it doesn't work for certain sites for her then she'll soon find the error of her ways, if she doesnt then i guess its tough beans!  Either way you still get to use firefox instead...

I do sometimes struggle to understand what women percieve to be rational...

oh yeah, and if you do keep IE7 i'd do what bubba said and uninstall and then get the latest version and also update the whole java platform on your puter (only install java once youve got all the browsers you want to use installed.)

I love how even the simplest request for advice can so easily descend into bitching chaos courtesy of our friends on the dark side:

Its no wonder why they think UKB is elitist.  I concur; its just its the elite of the well mannered.

Paul, Im aware your not after alternatives after reading UKC so ignore what i said about FF if you want but give DLing the java client a go, it should be worth a try.

You could always get the best of both worlds and install the IE tab plugin for FF. Then everyones satisfied

And if your a geek (or have a strange affinity for regular expressions) you can write them to automatically filter your pages so they appear in the correct browser

right ive had a brief trawl of the depths of the internet over this.  I'm now assuming that this problem is actually a problem with javascript.  The two are similar but different, java can work on its own, script needs to be browser based.  Microsoft, god love them, claim increased javascript functionality with the new IE7 but people are obvioulsy having difficulties.

You must make sure that java script is enabled in your security settings etc etc.

Im going out running now, but found this which should sort you out:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Browser_Issues/Q_21801656.html

It may try and make you register and pay if it does, just view googles cached version and that gets you round paying:

Just noticed on Slashdot that IE7 has now been officially released.

Get it from Microsoft
