I see he has taken to borrowing problem names again "Eat Yerself Whole". This is the name of one of tc's problems at Langstrath. I suppose it was a coincidence

More likely Greg, they both took the name from the album, by Kingmaker or someone I think?

Nope. I was on a 'things that require time and effort to do' theme. Hence: "Eat Yourself Whole" and its companion problem "Bonsai Your Cat".

The 1970s had a profound effect on me   although the current medication is helping with the flashbacks (to Mc Callum)

Anyway. Scottishclimbs.com does seem to a bit of a festering cesspit at the moment, hell it's even got Norrie trading insults which is a bit of a pity. Some people on there should have been banned straight away.

On the plus side, if you scroll down a bit there's an interesting topic about hard slabs.

If I remember correctly, the Welsh lads (Harris in particular) were all for blowing McCallum out of the water but were persuaded otherwise by the journalist, Peter Gillman, who eventually wrote a calming, measured piece for the Sunday Times. McCallum then disappeared from the climbing scene and never resurfaced. Most of his bogus routes have now been climbed, I think (Afreet Street was one of them). Which just leaves Maestri, Cesen and...all the other bullshitters out there (thankfully there are not many)

From SOC Blog...

Warning: Problem child at work [i think only Cubby & Jo have ever seen this photo before, of my Lakes raiding years] I can only report back that the rock is a lot tougher than the locals. But then they knew that judging by the amount of gaps they left for me to fill in.

How is it that the issue of Si O'Connor always manages to rile the 'loose Boulderers' on this forum ?

This is not meant to be an abusive post, I just don't understand how or why you all put this much energy into something that ultimately doesn't really affect you.

With this said i can see how the SOC rumours might be annoying to climbers who have trained their asses off to climb at a grade most of us can only talk about on forums like this.

Not sure if I class as a 'loose boulderer'.
For my part, far from being riled, I find the subject entertaining and amusing, in a cheap reality TV sort of way. Not big, not clever and probably bad for my karma score, I know, but 'car crash' fascinating all the same.
And to be honest, if I only commented on posts which really affected me I wouldn't have a lot to say on here at all. And then what would I do all day sat here at my desk in the office? Work...heaven forbid.

While I have now revised my opinion slightly and no longer believe that these forums are necessarily the best place to resolve issues like this (even though the claims were made through this medium and people have a right to reply through the same channels), I wonder how you would feel if the world class problems and routes that have been claimed were a little closer to home (in your local area)?

If these things have indeed been climbed they certainly do affect us, since they would represent a quantum leap in standards in the UK. In fact, I can think of only two or three climbers in the world who might be capable of such an output of cutting-edge new problems and new routes/ repeats.
If they have not been climbed, or if the numbers attached to them turn out to be massively inflated, that is important, too, as this affects both local activists and visitors. In this case the descriptions should be revised or excluded from any present database or future guidebook to set the record straight.
What does not matter is the reason for the 'hoax', if that is what it is. Any discussion about that would be based on pure speculation. In other words, this issue is a matter of historical record only and should not degenerate into character assassination. Passion is fine, cruelty is not.

I have to say, I find it quite fascinating, and more power to the Shimidh O'Conchuirs of this world.

I find bouldering trivia absolutely tedious most of the time, and spend much time on here sifting through threads on little filler-in problems, and which-hold-to-use-on-which-problem-type-eliminate stuff very boring - that's not to say it's not important, but it's local stuff for local people info.

The presence of SOC in flying form is a fantastic thing altogether, and transcends the humdrum that invades much of our lives - long may this extraordinary piece of performance art/sociopathy continue.

Up until now I've had no opinion on the guy and I still refuse to debate what he may or may not have ever climbed (and I don't mean to sound too up my own arse now), but scratching intitials suggests to me a total lack of respect for the activity he has chosen to pursue (namely climbing natural rocks).

Si gets a whole load of stick on various sites and I have no idea how much is justified, but finding this out has p-eed me off and limits the chance of me ever having much respect for the guy.  But that's it from me, I don't know him and don't intend ever knowing him if that's his attitude to the rock, even if he can climb V14.
