Buying a car in america

If you were planning to follow in the footsteps of the great and the worthy and planned to visit America to show those yanks how it goes down but wanted to purchase a vehicle in the states, how does one go about it? what do you need? I know it varies by state, and I understand that if you buy in california then you have to register it to someones address. What do you do about insurance? is there such thing as road tax?

Prolly got more than a year before going, but want to understand!

Someone asked about camper vans not too long ago, do a search?

When I got one I needed an adress for car reg purposes and insurance. You can get insured on a UK license, but make sure you have a new one.
There is a state caa tax sticker you need, some states ask for a smog test on emissions before you can get one, notably california. Might be worth buying somewhere outside Cali, and driving from there.
