i have taken the inspiration and dusted off my old (and very skethcy!) GT. The ZUM looks nice, I'd love a road bike but i think its a bit impractical for where I live.

what bike do you think you'll go for/

Check this lot out www.bonthronebikes.co.uk
Really good for bargins on last years models, well happy with my gary fisher sugar from them £1300 to £800. I've had a merlin for a few years too, no problems there either.
Rather than the hardtail have you considered a short travel full susser? I was a confirmed xc hardtail freak until the gary fisher, and I reckon it's just as quick up and a lot quicker downhill.
Having riden some newer cannondales, oranges and giants, well impressed with what they're doing on the cross country/enduro front too.

Only prob with getting a full susser is exspense, you got slap some cash out....Now personally I wouldnt ride off road on anything else but a full susser BUT if your buying new then 500/600 squids aint gonna buy you jack. You might get an ok frame but the shock will be shit and the components will be awful. If you want to go down this route then second hand is where its at, Specalized Enduros' the 'o4 and below models are well cheap at the mo second hand. The new '05 model had got rave reviews and as such the older ones are worthless now. Ive got an 'o4 enduro which i bought second hand and its bloody fantastic, horst link, 5" travel(now up to 6"!!!) hope hubs, mavic 317 rims, xt kit, manitou forks and all for £1100 2 years ago. Ive seen them at £600 now!!!!

FBSF will go at me for this ;) but why do you want a MTB ? Roadbikes are twice as fast if you're using it for commuting. Whichever way you look at it tho' there's a serious world of kit fetishism opening up :)
If you're going MTB then you can get a Giant VT2 now for £900 !

I suspect there is a clue in the original post where he said "I'm just across the gorge from some good mountain biking ". And are road bikes REALLY twice as fast for commuting, regardless of the route?

There are none so blind as they who do not want to see.

Or you subscribe to the "Fun, excitement, adventure, a Jedi craves not these things" school of thought.

Or maybe you are becoming one "the Cyclists" from Monkey Dust? Zmmmmm!

So wearing spandex and spending the time looking at the arse of the bloke in front of you makes you feel more manly? :?

it takes some doing to be fast enough to get close enough to see the arse of the bloke in front.
i read in the times at the weekend.the more a man is in to macho things i.e.4x4,beards,wife beater tee shirts etc the more likely he is to be anxious about his sexuallity.

thats why i always wear a dress.

I've got a collection of bikes including an very old road bike, an old Kona and a newish Kona which I sometimes commute on, but I have always wanted a posh new road bike. But with the state of Sheffield's tarmac, you just wouldn't want your highly spenny Campag carbon high-profile rims going crunch into a lovely wheel sized pot hole. It's bad enough with 2.5 inch fatboys.

on the front of your bike, theres something called handle bars.if you turn these you will go round the potholes or you can practice your mtb skills by jumping them.

Sort of defeating the point of having a straight line beast-bike if you're constantly weaving about like a pisshead and trying to do bunny hops from a racing stance

not when the cables are in - they're virtually smooth then...

the mk1 whyte 46 i tested had a bottle mount on the top of the top tube.  if you mounted a bottle cage on it (especially a ringle one like mine) it was a far more scary proposition than those cable guides.

my mk2 doesn't have them, so one of the development guys obviously did himself some harm.

I'd quite like a Banshee Morphine - £350 though and only one importer in the uk. Strong as fuck apparantly and can be used for everything from street to dh.

i've never seen one of those before!  i'm after a really burly hardtail, but with more of a freeride bias, rather than a dirt jumper.  that thing looks perfect...

The importer is Freeborn, and the Banshee site is here

It also takes either 24" or 26" (or combination) wheels. When I've got some money I'm tempted.
