Which report is that? I'd be interested to read it.

The access situation here is an interesting one - the whole dale is a Natural Nature Reserve. The lower half, between Rubicon and Ravensdale, has always had very limited access, mainly due to the presence of a moss that grows nowhere else in the world. The flora otherwise, whilst excellent, is no more exceptional than nearby sites like Monk's dale.

In recent years two developments have happened: NE have been rolling out a policy of open access across their reserves (I visited the wonderful Aston Rowant only this week), and the moss has probably also been found in Cumbria (takes a while to confirm these things, though in 2011 NE were still claiming ' just one square metre of it exists in the world at a secret location in Cr*****ok Dale SSSI').

However the attitude of the reserve managers locally (both NE and DWT) is rather squarely anti-access, so we will have to see how things develop. In a nation which is still steadily chipping away at our natural heritage year on year, it seems hopelessly counter-productive to exclude visitors. Who, then, to stand up for it when it comes under threat?

Although the VP peak bouldering guide is good and stuff, it is too heavy and upsets me every time I head out as the bulk means I can get less pies in my bag.

The old rockkfax was a sensible size and had an intelligent amount of problems marked on each page (rather than about 6 in the VP guide). If it is as I suspect lighter and thinner I shall be buying it. I shall just remove the pages I do not want to see (like I have done with all of the pages with worms picture on in previous guides)

The Rockfax probably won't have a shot of scouse dave's arse in the cover, hence its not worth buying.

I won't as I don't need another guide to bouldering in the Peak District.  Vertebrate Graphics 2nd edition BANFF winning tomb and BMC comprehensive guides which also include bouldering.

I expect many other regulars here are in a similar situation.

I didn't know they'd diversified into burial chambers. I heard it was a dying market.

They're digging themselves quite a hole in some respects.

I suspect it will sell OK, despite continued problems with checking on the problems for one of the their key targets: the punter audience (looking at their databases the BMC graded slightly harder than Rockfax norms and yet I still find obvious issues even on their demo pages that are a grade up from a stiff BMC grade and we will have to see if there will be continued issues with accuracy of lines in the less well travelled areas). However, having grades much more all over the place on low grade stuff never hurt sales of any of the font guides. On the grade front their publicity says they will use V and UK tech for low grade and for mid grade upwards V and Font (from 6A+ I think) which is in my view a good idea. Oddly enough it looks like UKB (excepting maybe slopes' and his fancy toilet paper) won't be their target audience.

I still use my old rockfax guide over the 1st edition davis/barton guide.

The VP one is like a wallpaper catalogue and really hard to hold with one hand whilst I'm lusting over the pics.
