Fun dh/play/park bike to replace a stinky?
August 29, 2012, 01:10:54 pm
The stinky is fucked now and will possibly need replacing. Ideally any new frame should be able to take the components off the stinky, so 1.5 headset (for the 66's off the stinky) and a 12mm through axle rear end and if I could fit the rocco shock it would be a bonus. 170 or so rear travel, 64 ish HA, sturdy and stable.

What other options are there other than another stinky? Cheaper the better.

Any ideas folks??

Now there is a pot calling the kettle black!

No its properly knackered: The shock bolts are both snapped in half and I cant get them out of the frame (I have been riding with the suspension held in by half a bolt for the last 3/4 weeks), the brushings are gone and the snapped bolts mean I cant change them, the gear hanger is damaged and I cant get it off , there are those big dents on the top tube and the bearings need changing but I cant get to them as half the bolts are seized. It would probably cost more to get it repaired than replaced (a brand new stinky frame is 450 ish).

Ian, u would need a Zoton if u buy a new YT.

Personally, wouldn't.

I'd look long and hard at the 170mm park type market. Be aware 1.5 straight through head tubes are becoming fewer.. But u will get good cash for the fork.

I also think 64 degrees is the steepest u should consider.

My pick of the crop would be a lapiere Froggy.

I doubt that shock will fit anything else.. But there again most frames are sold with shocks on the 2nd hand market.

Gimme yr real budget, I'll have a fun time keeping an eye on th classifieds.

Noton maybe!  If I buy a yt it will be a Tuesday Ltd, 888RC3 Ti etc, mega deal.

Otherwise, I can get an as new Stinky air frame for about 480, which I could switch everything over to. ATM this is the budget as last year proved quite a bit more expensive than I expected  :o

You are right about this, Voltage and the Kona are the only ones I have managed to find.

Is it possible to get steerer tubes swapped?

Yes Ian. Though TBH... However much u love em.. Sell the frame set, with ALL th bike specific shit on it, like chain guide, headset, BB and forks...

Then get another bike.

I know it hurts, but it's time to move on.

I hear what you are saying but, £££s is the issue really ATM. Plus, I am really happy with the suspension and most new bikes come with rock shox.

So, it's gravity based, pref single crown??

Make a decision on the DH vs FR thing..

Gimme a budget and I'll gladly spend hrs seeing what bargains can b found.

Need a tight brief.. ESP,on the dual or single crown forks option..

Ian, are you a Facebook-er? Fatdoc and I are in a group for used MTB stuff. There's Kona Coiler frame in there for £200 ATM, amongst other stuff like a Demo 7 and 2 Big Hits

No but a dheap demo 7 might be an option. Coiler is just like the enduro I have.

So my position is:

Ideal wouuld be a frame that has 1.5 head tube, decent angles, is in good nick, Fox or Marzocchi rear shock and is max £500, but less is better. As I said, I can pick up a new stinky for 480 so this is the benchmark at the moment.

However, if it was a full bike: Triple clamp (Marzocchi), 63 degrees ish, DH but not uber racey, probable max 1000  but would prefer it cheaper.

   Have fun!

K. I'm on it... Withou the use of angle sets and off set bushes ( which I  use on my commie mini DH) u are closing down the options... To an inevitable purchase of a *proper* DH bike with dual crowns et al.

Tbh yr time has come, time to have low slack bike... Compared to a stinky u won't believe what that sort of  bike can do.

U sure £1000 max? 1200 would really open up the choices.

If there is anything amazing, I might be tempted but it would have to be special. The YT tues ltd should be around in November and if I am ging to be spending a lot I would probably wait for that.

I dont want to spend too much ATM, thats why I am still considering the stinky frame.
