Favourite Albums 2011
December 22, 2011, 09:02:25 am
Time to nail your colours to the mast!

Top 10 In no particular order;

Plaid - Scintilli (only just discovered them, massive back catalogue to explore)
Foo Fighters - Wasting Light (return to form)
Little Roy - Battle for Seattle (Reggae Nirvana covers - what's not to like)
Cashier No 9 - To the Death of Fun (jangly guitars ahoy!)
SBTRKT - Sbtrkt (electronica goodness. The Step in Shadows EP is great too)
Death in Vegas - Trans-love Energies (same as before but now with less gloominess)
Gorillaz - The Fall (apart from a couple of terrible tracks)
Guillemots - Follow the River (not as good as TTWP, but still excellent)
The Black Dog - Liber Dogma (more good electronica goodness)
DJ Shadow - The Less You Know.... (esp warning sign)
The Sea & Cake - The Moonlight Butterfly (continued good form)

Crap that's 11. OK, top 11 then.

Don't know if I could scrape together 10 'albums' this year, but:

Youth Lagoon – The Year of Hibernation
Metronomy – English Riviera
Bon Iver – Bon Iver
Beirut – The Rip Tide
Gil Scott Heron & Jamie XX – We're New Here
SBTRKT – sbtrkt (just scrapes in. just)
I Break Horses – Hearts

And a couple technically from last year, but which I only listened to this year:

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt (amazing one man band folk stuff)
Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (actually not shit)

I've also been listening to the Lanterns on the Lake album, but I'm yet to be convinced.

So that's 10. Sort of.

Darkstar - North
Metronomy - The English Riviera
Wild Beasts - Smother
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Wooden Shjips - West
Tune Yards - Who Kill
Field - Looping State of Mind
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Dutch Uncles - Cadenz
Dead Man's Waltz - Dead Man's Waltz (Folk Noir from the Islands)

To be fair, I've only bought about 15 this year...

No real reason, just those albums were well received and that's where I head about them.

If you liked those, it's a good place to hear about new and less well know artists.

I use Hype Machine a bit, plus word of mouth, Related Artists on Spotify, Piccadilly Records mailouts. I'll add DiS to the list.

I'd pick Bon Iver as my album of the year I think.

Bon Iver - Bon Iver

You sure you don't mean Helplessness Blues?

PS You made a decision what you are doing yet? Poll time?

2011 was the year I officially became 'old', the only album I bought that actually came out in 2011 was 'I'm new here' by Gil Scott-Heron (not that awful techno version either :ras:).

So that'll be my top album then (very good it is too).

I agree, new one is a bit patchy although it has a couple of great tracks.

I'm going for :-

Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Cloud Control - Bliss Release
Paper Aeroplanes - Comfortable Sleep EP
Bombay Bicycle Club - Different Kind of Fix

and not from 2011, but I've only just discovered them :-

Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See
Sugar - Copper Blue

The latest Noah and The Whale album and Rolling Blackouts by The Go Team.

The Vaccines album is pretty good too as is the new Blink 182 one both of which I got for the Mrs.

Albums I haven't got yet (one isn't out yet) but have heard bits of recently and want are by Little Comets and Various Cruelties.

Josh T Pearson - Last of the Country Gentlemen (hands down winner)

Rest in no particular order:

Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest
Wilco - The Whole Love
King Creosote and John Hopkins - Diamong Mine
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die but You Will (pretty much as good as anything in their career?)
The Unthanks - Diversions Vol. 1
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake (Yes, I know its on every single year end list - but it deserves to be)
Explosions in the Sky - Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (Possibly? First time I've really got them at all)
My Morning Jacket - Circuital (Not great by their standards but still good)
J Mascis -Several Shades of Why
St Vincent - Strange Mercy (Possibly, not heard enough times to convince yet.)

Honourable mentions to Laura Marling and Bon Iver.

It's ok, miserablism makes me happy   :'( ;D

Earlier this year I also bought Eliot Smith's post demise compilation An Introduction which has similar subject matter, but I think it's amazing!
