Clip stick. To buy or make?
April 07, 2011, 01:49:57 pm
Hey All,

Want to get a clip stick and don't mind splashing the cash, but have heard that they can be a bit flimsy.

Is this true, or would i be better off making my own?

Cheers

Mines been fine (betastick). Been in the rucksack to spain twice and turkey once on budget flights, and generally survived being chucked about at the crag.

my beta stick has far outlasted all of my DIY efforts, best to check it works with your quickdraws before buying as it doesn't seem to fit them all.

I'd recommend buying one

my beta stick has survived going through easyjet a couple of times, strapped to the side of my rucksack cos i overestimated the available vertical space in my bag!

don't drop it from the top of a crag and it should last ages

Beta stick it is then.

If it can withstand the gentle touch of the luggage gorillas that's good enough for me!

If you get the compact one it is much more likely to fit in your bag and has so far always been long enough to get between any two bolts I have needed to clip.

I recommend that you don't buy (or make) a clip stick. Yes they are useful for clipping high first bolts etc. but in the long run they will probably turn you into a nervous wreck! why? because one ends up relying on them to much and then forgets how to climb and fall with confidence.

what the Aaronator said

you should buy the Lagerstarfish SkyPad

it's basically a portaledge with a crash pad on top

just clip it to your highest bolt and boulder your way to the next one

they'll all be using them this summer

which is more than enough reason to get one.
