Oh Vienna...
April 01, 2011, 07:23:37 pm
I'm off to Vienna for a week, mainly for conference shizzle, but have a weekend there on my lonesome.. before meetings on Monday and home on Tuesday...

Now, online I've found a few walls in Vienna, and a dedicated bouldering wall that looks OK.. but wondered if the long reaching tentacles of UKB had any beta on which ones were OK.. or (long shot) whether or not theres any outdoor locations within reach of public transport or even a days car hire (if its a good spot..) bearing in mind I'll have no mat...

Theres some mighty attractive spotters there... ;)

Though its one way of staying in shape I suppose... I may have problems putting the Eur 990 through expenses though ;) and theres no mention of whether or not I have to provide a bag of chips....

I don't think there is any worthwhile bouldering accessible from Vienna by public transport. The bouldering in Graz would also not be suitable for a short trip as the crags are not so easy to find and the boulders are very spread out. The only place which may fit the bill is Merkenstein

It is about 2:30 from Vienna. But I have never been there so don't really have a clue.

Maybe best to just hang out in Vienna. It's a nice place :-D

Merkenstein. thats the place i went to years ago. Was staying in Vienna and cant remember it being 2 1/2 hours drive.

Had a fun day but cant remember it being somewhere i was desperate to go back to. Really sharp.

Yeah, Vienna's a nice place to hang out.. And fine for the solo traveller.. But I've been there 6 or 7 times and kind of feel I've seen alot of the sights.. Not complaining, just thought If there was somewhere nearish it'd be good to get out and explore... Thanks for the links

Go to the Mizzi-Lange-Wand. Limestone, 5-10 m high, faces south. Nice little venue if I remember correctly (I lived in Vienna in 1977-78) but might be a little polished now. Accessible by public transport: tram number 60 to Rodaun.

Merkenstein

I'd go to a place named after a pubic wig and a beer glass for the sheer novelty value.

You are right. This face is really polished now. And there is no bouldering at all there. Nice place though.

How about this place. Once again never been there but looks like it could be possible with publich transport. It is called Steinernes Stadl. It is somewhere between Bad Fischau and Dreistetten. Bad Fischau is near Wiener Neustadt which is not too far from Vienna and easily reached on the train. Then I guess you can get a bus/tram to Bad Fischau. Then from what I can make out, it is somewhere in the woods between Bad Fischau and Dreistetten.

There is a carpark at some point and I'm guessing that there must be regular buses between these two places so should be able to get dropped off there. The carpark is Holztafel/Finkenhaus. There is a topo on the first link which guides you from there until the boulders.

If anything it would be an interesting adventure, even if you find no boulders. But sounds like it could be worth the effort.

There is some shocking no-shirt climbing in this video but, try and concentrate on the boulders. :-D

Cheers Ackbar,
that place looks interesting - some sort of low arch thingy (from the video) and proably no need for a mat too... Its about 2k walk from Bad Fischau station, so I'll have a think about it. I'm staying close to the University, and I noticed that the bouldering wall (that I found) is bang inthe centre of town - so 15-20 min walk away.. So I'll probably check that out on the friday eve (rock and roll eh!) and see how I feel on the Sat. Might be quite nice to go exploring on Sunday - as from what I remember, most things are shut on Sunday (save the museums and churches etc..)...
Good beta though - thanks,
Tom

More short routes than bouldering but there's Dürnstein, too, not far from Krems on the Danube. I think there's a station at Dürnstein. The other place that I've just remembered is the Steinerne Stadl at Bad Fischau.

They now have two walls in Vienna - their older one a little way from the centre (5 min walk from the Ubahn) and a new swanky city centre one that I've not been to...

Went to a new wall in Vienna today called BlockFabrik. Pretty good little wall about 2/3 the size of the works I would estimate. Good modern style setting and full range of angles from slab to horizontal roof. On one part of the wall you can even top out straight in to the cafe seating area. Also has training stuff including steep board, campus board, peg board and various monkey bar type stuff. Sells beer.

I've been told that peg boards pay for themselves quite nicely due to general fitness dudes fancying themselves ninja warriors.

That moment when you begin to wonder if you may be the strongest climber at the conference, but then you see a 9a climber.
