Best place to doss in Snowdonia?
July 06, 2009, 09:07:53 pm
Going to Wales for the weekend and need a place to throw up a tent during the night. Can easily pack it away in the morning so as not to attract attention.

Any good places to wild camp or doss in Gwynedd? Preferably the pass or Ogwen I reckon.

If not then where's the cheapest campsite?

Personally I used to camp at the DolGam campsite in Capel Curig, as the Pass, Ogwen, and Gwynant were just as close as each other. It's pretty cheap, plus there's a decent pub 5 minutes walk down the road.

If you really want to wild camp (cheaper still) Llyn Cwmffynnon 657564 (? - just North of Pen y Pass) is meant to be a nice spot. Really sheltered in all but the very worst weather!

the easiest and is probably by Cromlech boulders, it should be free but you may get the mad woman of the pass tapping on your tent and asking for anything from 50p to £1.50 early in the morn, it's up to you whether to argue the point or give her the dosh...she's a bit of a legend

Is she actually allowed to collect money. I have heard conflicting stories?

I challenge you to refuse! She'll show you her letter from the farmer, which has probably fallen into a dozen pieces by now. Was looking pretty ragged when I last saw it. I know a lot of people have refused, but she's so insistent, that they all ended up paying!

The best camping spot is in the cwm (w/ lake and island, unseen from the road) besides Cyrn Las.  A trot, but unbeatable.

Resurrected as...

I am planning to Ahem, I have a friend who is planning to kip in the van Sat night en route to the Ysgo and wondered if anyone knew anywhere a bit off the beaten track where he might be able to park up undisturbed for the night?  ;)

Thinking beyond Caernarfon...

What about the normal Ysgo parking spot - on a bit of a slope I suppose, but dead quiet down there.

Or just try that little farm campsite at Llanengan (dead cheap IIRC) and go for a few pints in the nearby pub. Going to be pretty chilly this weekend so you might appreciate the warmth.
