Creatine, protien & vegans..
May 30, 2008, 11:56:04 am
Hi all, found some random stuff on search, but thought i'd pick your brains again.
Been climbing for years & recently gone vegan, i havent lost lots of weight or felt too much weaker, have been using Brown Rice protein & Pea protein isolate (from myprotein.co.uk) to aid recovery after training, just wondered if any one had any further tips or advice on the nutrition front.
Was also told Creatine ethyl ester or creatine monohydrate might be worth a look, i realise the whole creatine debate has been done to death so please dont shoot me down...........

A carb rich snack as soon as possible (within half an hour) after climbing has been the biggest revelation to me on the nutrition front.  Combined with a proper warm down it reduces the stiffness/soreness I get the next day markedly.

How does the brown rice and pea taste?  I used H&B soya isolate when I feel I need it but it tastes foul.

Use a recovery forumla instead of just protein then you'll get the carbs as well, i'm sure a lot of them are suitable for vegans as well.

CEE feels like you've just swirled a brillow pad soaked in acid round your mouth. I won't say anymore on the matter, there are plenty of posts and research.

Why the change to vegan? A simple suggestion would be to switch back and therefore not have this problem but i'm guessing its not an option.

Cheers for the input chaps, been vegan for nearly a year now, I went vegan 'cos I didn't want to eat animals anymore simple as that really.
The pea & brown rice powers are like most of the myprotein stuff tastes shit, but dose the job, also use SIS Rego, but normally after a run or mtb ride.
As for Creatine I'm only a 7a/b punter so wont bother with it.

Fair enough.
Its funny with the MP stuff, the first time I drank the Hurricane XS I was seriously concerned that I had just bought a kg of the stuff, horrendous. Now I don't mind it at all (like would be a bit strong) and the MM stuff just tastes far too sweet.
If you're still having problems with recovery when you've started taking rego after it then maybe re-consider the creatine. I remember another veggie down the works complaining that recovery time was appalling, I think she switched back to meat.

I use the torq stuff a lot (ie pretty much everyday) for triathlon training and climbing and it seems pretty good.  I don't use creatine at all, as there's probably no real benefits for me.

The torq energy drink is def better than psp22, but keep the concentration low.

Anyway, they also do a natural energy and a vegan recovery drink (albeit the raw ingredients for one).  I can't vouch for how good it'll be but the rest of their products come with a stamp of approval and essentially its their recovery drink without the whey and milk and you get to make it taste however you want...

Its pricey but I guess thats what you pay for niche stuff...

Fifth one down.

Let me know if its any good.
