Going out in June, super psyched  :bounce:

Can anyone tell me which areas are banned? I hear Teagarden roof may be not climbable? Sorry if this has been asked before...

Teagarden was ok in 2015 don't think its changed but the access there isn't covered under the normal permit you pay for.
Good news, thanks!

Yes, you need to get a separate permit from the house nearest the bouldering area.

Keep an eye out on the left just as you approach the Kliphuis Teagarden when driving up the pass for the first time, the obvious blank looking face perched on a rock is the Black Shadow headwall.

Teagarden was open for the 2016 season, but check with Charity, Thys or Rebecca at any of the campsites first what the deal is.

We fly out next Saturday, when are you going in June?

Hi. Anyone been stung for having a bouldering pad on their flight recently? We are flying with Emirates from Birmingham to Capetown via Dubai and I cant stop stressing about paying 100s of pounds extra for having a bouldering pad ! I keep looking at the baggage allowance rules but it isnt 100% clear what the allowance is for various reasons so thought I would just come on here looking for some solace ? Im pretty sure it is fine but...the excess charges are somewhat excessive!! Any advice from folk who have been recently appreciated!

Cheers,

Steve

Flying with Emirates in August, the weight allowance is clearly stated on tickets, etc. so that's no problem but there is a maximum size bag, something like no more than 240cm circumference from memory. This only comes into effect this summer so look into it. Quite easy to find via their website.

And you could always call them. I had to query something on my tickets and once I'd got through they were able to advise.

Yer I was going to ring, probably only way to be sure. The advice on the website isnt clear to me as there are different systems in place depending on where you start from however I dont know if they mean where the start of the trip is from (so from the UK for us) of if it means the individual legs.... There is a diff system , a piece concept vs weight concept, when 'starting' from Africa and on the piece concept it looks like any normal sized pad would be a no no....

South African Airways wasn't clear to us so I rung up, they said we got a piece of hold luggage and a piece of sports equipment as standard. The check in people were the biggest hassle. Just be confident and stern with them

I'd be interested to know what they say, we're flying out with Turkish who I've been with before and have had no issues with the  pads apart from a transfer at Jo'berg where we nearly lost them! On the way back we're with Emirates and I believe it's leaving from South Africa that the size/weight thing comes into play.

We flew with SFA, in Heathrow check in was fine but in Cape Town they weren't sure just make sure you have the t&c's printed to show them at the desk.

So just rang the Emirates London office for general enquiries. According to the nice representative the baggage allowance  for the whole trip will be that as stated for leaving the UK i.e. the weight concept and therefore 30kg weight limit, size limits on items is 300cm external dimensions so most pads allowed i should think! I fully expect to have a disagreement with someone at some point at an airport, however feel well armed with knowledge now :P

Couple of the lads flew out from Glasgow last week with Emirates and managed to get a large pad each with no questions asked. (Snap Wrap and Petzl Cirro I believe)

Hi All

Just a quick heads up that anyone flying out of T3 at Heathrow (BA flight to Cape Town), security has changed the size of their baggage x-ray in oversized luggage so larger mats will not fit and need to be visually inspected and hand scanned which will add to your check in time.

On trying to check in two Moon Saturns tie together (and filled with stuff) security resorted to escorted me into some sort of clean room where I was asked by a crowd of officers to open up everything and have it swabbed down for explosives, drugs and other things.

This normally would not have been a problem if the mats were empty however I had collected a large number of Rab hats, t-shirts and jackets that had been given out for free at the CWIF, all with their tags still attached.

After much explaining they were for the local kids school Elizabeth Fontaine in Rocklands I was allowed to pack up and proceed but it added a good delay to proceedings.

Things settled down when I had a beer put into my hand later in the lounge
