Buggered shoulder
September 02, 2011, 11:38:04 am
Hello all, can the combined wisdom of ukb offer any advice for my knackered shoulder?

Apparently I have a torn/damaged labrum, physio has helped me get ROM back, and the occasional stabbing pain at odd angles seems to have ceased. Have been hitting the therabands and stretches from the physio and just started easy climbing again, shoulder obviously feels weak, very clicky, wobbly and sore afterwards.

Question is, given the type of injury am I now just waiting for it to dislocate the first time I try anything vaguely difficult? Options from the physio were to get a scan to establish the size of tear, then apparently some folk have the tear stitched, or if the labrums cartilage is a flap, that gets trimmed off.

Be great to hear from anyone else dosy enough to fling themselves down big hills, crash, and end up with this problem. cheers.

My advice would be to go see your doc and get referred to a specialist. The shoulder, from my experience, is a complicated joint and there and many different things that could be wrong.

I had a Arthogram and MRI to establish the tear. This however didn't clearly identify the extent, that would require going in and looking/poking about. My main issue is the pain in the ac joint, and yes it's does feel very lose at times, almost like to could dislocate - I was told that if it did it would mean surgery.

Hey - the first thing you need to do is make a date with a Specialist and and get sent to the MRI machine to ascertain the extent of the tear. Whilst often not 100% accurate, this should give you a good indication and let you know whether you're likely to need surgery. Some minor tears you can live with (with work strengthing the shoulder as a whole) but anything major is likely to de-stabilise the joint significantly. I had a SLAP (Superior Labral tear from Anterior to Posterior) repair fixed a couple years ago. I have four anchors put which lashed down the tear and an some minor shaving to the acromion to fix an impingement. It was a very unpleasant experience and I wouldn't recommend surgery until you've exhausted all other avenues to fix the problem. 4 weeks in a sling, and then 6 months of painful rehab and no climbing. Now I'm left with a strong shoulder but poor range of motion as the whole joint was tightened up. My body has adapted so that I can still do most of what I used to but I'm fucked on gastons on that side. Don't let this put you off tho - Others on here have had this op and faired much better. There many factors such as age, flexibility, surgeon and rehab that can effect the outcome so if you're still young and get good care you'll prob be ok.

Thanks folks, back to the docs it is, had been (probably incorrectly) hoping that with the physio it'd just sod off hurting and get back to normal.

Interesting vids on that site bridget, cheers.

as others said go to a specialist and have MRI first.

then, even if you get away with no surgery, be patient.

i've had a subluxation with SLAP lesion of grade 1 (out of 3) and even if 1 year later i was roughly back to my pre-injury level, it took 2 years to have no special pain and feel confident on that side again...

wish you good luck
