Pensioning off a camalot!
August 03, 2011, 12:50:16 pm
Recently took a few whingers onto a 0.3 BD Camalot. It's now looking a bit bashed, a bit bent and a bit past it!

Would you retire it, or just straighten it out and keep lobbing on to it?

It was placed about 1" into a horizontal crack, so was being loaded over an edge. It's also about 9 years old.

Why do you have to keep falling.  Can't you just hold on.  I don't like it.  This isn't fun anymore.  Are we nearly there yet?  I'm cold.  I'm hungry.

Sorry.  Nothing helpful to add.

BD would probably say retire it, but mechanically it's probably still sound. Hard to say without seeing, maybe get an engineer to have a look at it? ;)

Down to you though, if psychologically you don't trust it, bin and replace.

Having worked for a cam manufacturer in the past, I know that repeated falls where the stem is bent rapidly can be a problem. There is rapid heat build up within the wire cable in the bend area and this could cause some weakening. i've seen this demonstrated in in a highly exaggerated fashion with a brand new cam. If you hold the cam head and flex the stem rapidly, it will snap much quicker than you would ever imagine. Realistically though, if every time you place it, you think "shit, it's that dodgy one" then retire it. Maybe see how quickly you can break the cam head off so you're not tempted to use it again?!

I secretly think I only fell off because that nasty wee cam tugged on my rope  :devil-smiley:

Ha, funny! The engineer in me says - fatigue shouldn't be a problem as it's only 3 or 4 falls and it clearly wasn't enough force to snap it outright. The only issue is it's diffcult to inspect beacuase of the plastac sleeve.

Also, the gear-head in me just keeps thinking  "Mmm, buy kkknnnneeeewwww ccccaaaaammmmmsss!!!"  I think the metolius mastercams might be quite good in that size...  :devangel:

No?   :-\  Hmm - that was one of the things I thought they'd be good for!   :google: sent me to rockclimbing.com...hmm...cheers for the heads-up!

Never got on that well with mates aliens - always found them hard to place and awkward to use.
