Steep riverside bouldering at Armathwaite on red sandtone. Cowrake quarry is very close to Penrith but doesn't have much above v1 really. If you go a bit further east there is some good highball stuff at Windmore end, short solid limestone with good landings. And even further east Goldsborough Car in is an awesome little steep grit bouldering crag.

Some of the Keswick boys have done quite a bit Armathwaite but I think its mainly eliminate stuff, as Bonjoy said there pure lines are quite easy.
Supposed to be pretty good though

Shame there is not much on the granite in the east! Spent ages looking round that quarry just off the M6 forget the name, and although there looks like there are loads of sweet little walls from the road, there all crap when you get up to them or the landings are poor  :injured: .

An old mate of mine  :oldgit: said he can rember seeing a bunch of natural granite boulders in the plantation across the road, this was when the trees where much less established but he can't remember where, and I couldn't find them when I went for a walk in there, man the trees are like one every meter, if there are any boulders they are well hidden but what a find if I ever do find them!  :owned:

What a great old myth that is!

Aswell as Goldsborough Carr, there are quite a lot of hardly known little crags around Teesdale way, some of the gritstone cap and some of dolerite columns, but apparently some of the tenant farmers on the Strathmore estate are ar*eholes who try to ban every cnut off their land, even though it isn't actually their call.

I haven't climbed up there, just 'modified' some caves, but Joe, the landlord of the Strathmore Arms in Holwick, told us about a lot of crags and stuff up there. He's well up for working with the BMC to get access to them, and to encourage responsible climbers to get up there, cos it'll get more folks at his pub (which is a great boozer, and him and his partner Helen are sound as a pound too).

Anyway upper Teesdale is a great spot anyway, even if the bouldering turns out to be a bit pants.

There are a number of little hidden outcrops around shap with some good bouldering, Armathwaite is good on a wet day, Windmore End also good but on a dry day. There are a number of little sandstone outcrops if you know where to look around the Appelby area... A nice highball area into deep water to!! very hidden and on private land well known to a few locals..
Cowrake is ok for us Penrith types Scratchmere scar is a little better. There is also some bouldering at the Penrith end of saddleback, I forget the name off hand, take your brush though as it gets very little traffic..

I'm sure I've seen little limestone outcrops (not big enought to boulder) from the M6 near Shap - is there stuff near there then?

How about that Hoff place appleby way, sure I remember some nice straight up vert wall stuff. And over greystoke forest west of penrith used to flail around in some small quarries and on some little limestone edges, ah happy days!

If you go from penrith to shap and look left (without crashing) on the A66 just after the road entrance to the big quarrys on the right there are a couple of little outcrops over some fields, not really worth traveling to unless you like esoterica and live near by.
Hoff is a stange little crag with good landings but not much in the way of a challenge.
If anyone owns a copy of the Old north of England guide for the area don't be fooled by the description of the Otterstones it looks like a drystone wall.

The latest position at Holwick Scar is that until the Countryside Act Open Access is confirmed in 2005 climbing is not allowed.
The crag has been shown as Open Access Land on both the Draft & Provisional Maps but the Landowner can still appeal but he has to show that it has been incorrectly included.
Mrs ??? (who has the campsite and bunkhouse at Holwick) gave me the phone number of Lord Strathmore's agent in Hexham, who might be able to shed further light on the access situation, but I have lost it

Do you mean the Carrock Fell boulders?  Just up past Mungrisdale on the roadside?
