Brachioradialis
October 28, 2008, 08:03:30 am
Just registered as some of you guys seem quite clued up re climbing injuries.

Anyway, I think I have a possible strain of my Brachioradialis muscle.  Dunno if it is that though, still waiting for physio appointment.  There is no pain/aching above the elbow area, sometimes it feels as though it's coming from the lateral epicondyle area and other times just in the bulgy bit of muscle right on the lateral side of the elbow when palm is facing up.  Sometimes pain is in that muscle, but I feel it in my forearm rather than elbow area, sometimes I feel it in my wrist and sometimes even down the back of my hand.  (I've also got issues with discs in my neck, so it may be related, but I'm convinced this is muscular/tendinous rather than nerve pain.  I get the pain when I rotate my forarm from suppination to pronation, when I squeeze stuff and when I try and pick things up in an open handed position with my palm facing down my arm is so weak (I can't itch my back either as it goes all weak, lol!)

Anyway, I can't seem to climb on it.  Well I can do VERY easy stuff (and bear with me here cos I don't boulder much) but if I climb anything that doesn't have huge ledges or jugs then it hurts and if I try and push things then my whole forearm hurts, starts burning and I get pumped pretty immediately.   I'm also struggling to swing an axe (very frustrating!)

Ok, enough waffling.  How have you guys treated Brachioradialis strain before seeing a physio.  I'm unsure of what stretches to do, and whether I should completely rest it, or do some very light climbing?

i had a very bad elbow a few years ago and it turned out to be a combination of a fucked brachioradialis and a very stiff shoulder. after getting nowhere with physios who treated it as you would a typical elbow tendon injury (which made it worse) I saw an osteopath who fully sorted it out.

he did lots of massage/stretching on arm and shoulder. the stuff i had to do at home was hot and cold packs (3 mins of each, 3 sets), plus a stretch where you extend your arm forwards, fingers pointing down, back of hand facing forwards and held by other hand. then stretch arm straight and rotate elbow inwards. does that make sense? anyway it worked a treat.

my advice would be see someone though, and if you live in Sheff/Peak area go see Kim Thompson.

Sonya, if you are getting actual weakness, coupled with "issues with my neck" you really ought to go to your GP. It sounds more nerve related than muscular/tendinous. Can you remember when it came on? How has it progressed? Do you get any numbness/tingling anywhere in your forearm?
Hope that helps
Joe

Thanks for replies so far.

Thanks for the link, it's defo not Lat.Epi, so not sure I should bother with wrist curls blah blah though of course they might be ok for prevention?  (although does latest sport's science not say that that stretching etc does abs nothing to prevent injury?  Certainly seems to be the case for running anyway)

Cofe - that stretch you described hits the spot nicely!  I'd been doing that, but without the rotation and it didn't seem to stretch enough to hit the spot.  Cheers.

Sausage - Yes, I have lots of nerve related symptoms, funny neck, burning shoulders, numb fingers and I have been to my GP who believes I may have central disc issues as my symptoms are bilateral (I'm assuming your medical?  So understand what I'm on about?) and I have been referred for MRI incase of spinal cord compression (have some leg nerve symptoms too, but unsure whether it's related or down to scar tissue from previous spinal surgery)  But........I'm well accustomed to nerve symptoms, having had lumbar spine issues and I'm convinced the neck/nerve issues and my forearm pain are separate.  My GP thinks the same.  He's pretty good and has discounted Lat. Epi. but does think there are tendon issues.   He was also concerned by the weakness.  But having suffered calf wasting and drop foot, the weakness in my arm feels non nerve related and more like a tendon/muscle stiffness causing the weakness.

PS - first noticed a problem when I was back pressing whilst bridging up a corner route at the climbing wall.  All my weight was on my arm/wrist/shoulder and it really bloody hurt, enough that I couldn't make the move and had to back off.  Then when doing side press ups I couldn't bear my weight on my hand as it was too painful.  About 2 weeks or so later started getting pain in elbow.

Numbness in fingers and burning shoulders and neck crap has been intermittant for over a year, so the forearm thing is a lot more recent.
