Title: Bruised Thumb
Post by: Jameshs on March 05, 2007, 10:25:01 am
I caught my thumb and a hold as i went for a Dyno, this was then followed by it contacting a bolt on hold which caused pain and falling off the problem.

I know its not broken and i think i have only bruised it as it looks a bit yellow. I have full movement of the thumb. I was wondering what ways i can reduce the swelling quickly. Anything i can do or take to increse this?

RICE!! Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Should help keep swelling down and improve blood flow to the effected area.

Ouch. Symapthies. I sprained my thumb squeezing the toothpast tube too hard the other day. Eejit!

RICE, but also tigerbalm and/or ibuprofen gel is good for bruising.

...and don't forget good old ibuprofen tablets. not so sure about tiger balm? might as well rub dolphin cum on the affected area...

Mmmm...

Whatever floats yer boat mate. Tigerbalm white cures everything! Much better than deep heat/raljex n'all that jazz. Not convinced about the red stuff though.

Plus you get to smell like yer'nan minus the hint of old'pee.

Not to piss on any bonfires, but I'd make sure you haven't got any ulnar collateral ligament laxity which may require formal splintage.  Google it or Gamekeeper's thumb
http://www.eatonhand.com/hw/hw016.htm gives you a punter's overview

You can get radial collateral rupture too but it's much less common.

the question was about reducing inflammation. tiger balm is not an anti-inflammatory. it's a snake oil. you certainly wouldn't want to put deep heat on an acute inflammation... i'm amazed by how often the same mistakes get made by people who ought to take an interest in these things. heat and acute injuries DO NOT MIX.

... Which is why I don't put raljex or deep heat on acute injuries. Calm down dear.

As for tiger balm white, all I can say is it's probably placebo effect. Have used it on a number of minor conditions and it seems to help. It does feel cooling when applied and seems to relieve stiffness and soreness and - at risk of having the medical establishment denouncing me as a fly-by-night, charlatan - bruising. I am merely offering my non-medically trained opinion -but hey if it works for Muay Thai boxers...

Glad to hear you're on the mend, Jamesh. Good luck with it, sir.

Well i think its getting better i have re gained most of the movement back without pain, expect on the extreme of the movement. Seems to be ok whilst climbing if strapped up, anything else i can do to get it healing quicker?
