Was over for a walk today so popped in to main area for a quick survey. Not Bad, Rigpa and Whistler all dry bar some slight seepage in low cracks, all would have been climbable and actually good nick with the breeze. Would assume over t’ will be in a similar state. Doesn’t look like too much rain this week so reckon will be game on next weekend, if a little warm from the long range!

Regarding the inefficient vote Labour got in 2017&19 -I think the huge mistake/flaw in the Corbyn project was a failure to actively recruit new party members in constituencies/wards under-represented in party membership. There is a feedback effect whereby friends and workmates introduce people like them to becoming members. That needs to be broken out of with effort. There was a huge influx of new members but they didn't represent the wider population at all. That really matters when a party relies on its membership for campaigning and policy development. Voters needed to see it as being "their" Labour Party, being run by people like them. A big policy shift like those manifestos required a lot of trust building and that requires such ownership by the electorate. A lot of the new "Red Wall" Tory MPs were local people voters could relate to.

Starmer also doesn't have relatable members nor candidates but that doesn't matter because he isn't trying a policy shift. People don't need to be persuaded or to put their trust in anything.

I'm with Teaboy. Anything other than already having your hands on or within a t-shirt's-sag is going to be useless for spotting that.

Jake and Amy are pretty handy and know the rules. They made two of the most entertaining bouldering films on YouTube. Each still somehow at <1k views.

My favourite investment VLE (60%+ of portfolio) has just released their final results showing good progress in trading and profitability at their solitary holding Shire and an indication of the value being outed most likely through a share tender offer as that is what they have chosen to do in the past, though taking it private is not out of the question.

https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/volvere--vle/final-results-to-31-december-2023-/8212955

Key passages:

“Group revenue from continuing operations (all of which related to Shire Foods) was £42.95 million (2022: £38.03 million) and the profit before tax from continuing operations was £3.64 million (2022: £2.33 million). Overall profit after tax for the year was £2.73 million (2022: loss £0.06 million).

Group total net assets were £37.51 million (2022: £35.75 million), with net assets per share* increasing to £14.83 (2022: £13.90).  Of this, cash and available for sale investments were £23.74 million (2022: £20.79 million).”

“In our interim results I said that shareholder returns remained at the forefront of the Board's strategy.  I want to reassure shareholders that this remains the case, not least in view of the Company's share price which, we believe, does not fully recognise the Group's underlying assets.  We are reviewing the best way to resolve this and are considering a number of options, which will be notified to shareholders when appropriate.  In the short term, the Group will continue to buy in its own shares whenever possible in order to narrow the Group's share price to NAV per share.”

The share price has bounced back from recent feb/mar lows by 40% to around the declared NAV so its interesting that they say the SP is undervalued and I take that as a recognition that the Shire investment isn’t marked to market but just included at the acquisition book value. Recognising the likely sale value of Shire would bump the NAV up to £20+ per share and so would expect a tender offer to be nearer to that figure so even at the current share price there is a case for buying for a speculative short term of maybe 20%.

One of the good things about tender offers is you avoid the wide spread between the buy and sell offer price and there’s no dealing costs. I’ve sold my entire holding of VLE in the past when a share tender offer has been made and then rebuilt my stake as the share price drifted back down post tender.

Here's an interesting short article on how Denmark came to be one of the first countries in the world to adopt proportional representation. Change takes work.

https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/how-did-denmark-get-proportional-representation/

It didn’t just take work, it took a massive change in the structure of the society. According to this (https://eh.net/encyclopedia/an-economic-history-of-denmark/) Denmark started industrialising in the 1870s, increasingly so in the 1890s. Perhaps it was the Danish way of solving the same problems that we faced earlier in the 19th century, and which we dealt with via the reform acts? An answer to this is beyond my knowledge but we have two professional historians in the thread who might be able to shed some light on this.

More relevant to the PR in the U.K. argument, has there been a similar change that didn’t occur in the context of either the huge social changes of industrialisation or with the create/recreation of the state after war or colonial independence?

conditions reports (isitgreasy on twitter) / Silverdale conditions

Anybody care to hazard a guess on conditions in the Silverdale area next weekend? Got a weekend of camping planned.
Thinking usual suspects, Woodwell, Warton, Trowbarrow. Maybe Hyning Wood, Fairy Steps and Cringle…

I know Trowbarrow is pretty reliable but not sure how seepy the others get so a “from the rockface” report would be appreciated if anyone local/recently visited.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up on Ayn Rand, after a quick look at the Ayn Rand institute website I think I'll spend a bit of time reading her stuff. Re - the vote. I think Stone answered that already - it doesn't matter who you vote for as in the words of George Galloway - 'they're two cheeks of the same arsehole'. I'd like to see the Conservatives get zero seats, you're right, they're awful! It might be worth spending time reading about Elite Theory, it provides one way of understanding how power works, it is quite mainstream and doesn't talk about Cabal's or Sheeple. Re - useless eaters, a good example of useless eater policy was the mass sterilisation of Indian women from the 50's to the 70's - 18.5 million.

That you have looked up Ayn Rand and thought "I should read her stuff" speaks volumes

I think it’s good form to try and understand the world from a variety of perspectives. At first glance her objectivism doesn’t appeal to me due to its lack of metaphysical thinking. In reality objectivism may be more in keeping with the current spirit of the age and the world view of those in power.
