Indeed, I would have no trouble employing that chap but I'd never want him to meet a client.

Awesome sleeve, particularly like the detailing on the flowers.

Do you still spend time in London Dylan? This is where my friend gets all their work done down there http://www.thefamilybusinesstattoo.com/index.php (http://www.thefamilybusinesstattoo.com/index.php)

This is where I got mine done Dylan, Mo the boss is excellent, as are Kanae (who did mine) and Dom Holmes... it really depends on what you want doing, you may find some artists are against cover ups, just ask, there is also a place in Shef, which looks to be doing some great work... Thou Art... dunno where it is though.

Indeed, I think as soon as I decided I wanted a mainstream career (photographer), I was pretty much forced to make the decision of making my look more mainstream, so.....out came the stretched 5mm tragus, left ear orbital, my two eyebrow piercings, and the 18mm stretched lobes.
Luckily the Tats are easily covered, as that could have been a little more tricky!
Still at least I could still keep the more fun....less visible piercings , it sucks that people are so prejudiced though, but I have seen things improve significantly in the last 3-4 years, one can but hope eh?
Title: Re: Just one more piercing and it's perfect..
Post by: slackline on January 08, 2010, 12:39:18 pm
I've kept both tragus piercings, one concha and one anti-helix piercing (as well as two navel and one nipple*).  I've a tattoo on my left forearm too.

I've never taken the ear-piercings out for any interview and have never struggled for jobs (or been asked to remove them), but I guess thats because there's generally a bit of demand for statisticians 'cause its a geeky topic and not enough people trained in the area.

Discriminating against people who choose to adorn their bodies with metal/ink is wrong, period.  People should be judged on their ability to perform the task they are (or are going to be) employed to do, what they look like has no effect on that whatsoever.

* I tend not to sit in the office topless though (unless its really hot  :P).

Yes it does - impressions count for a lot. That's why we have tattoos... vanity, showing off, territorial p*ssing contests.

I've got a half sleeve, chest plate a half completed back piece and several other tattoos on my other arm and legs.  I keep them covered up when I'm working.  I know I'd get a different reaction presenting a multi-million pound project proposal to an executive a boardroom in London, Houston or Singapore if I was wearing a vest, shorts and trainers with several square feet of ink on show as opposed to a suit, collar and tie.

It's a pity though.

From having met you and assuming you're as good with your work as you are in person, I know that a load of tattooes on display might make a small, societally-conditioned part of me go "hmmm", but as soon as you opened your mouth I'd get that you were on the ball...

The same applies to Slackline assuming he is as geeky with his work as he is in person :)

But I don't think first impressions should count, because you can spend time talking to the person you've just met and realise that whatever opinion formed on first seeing them is way off the mark (or it could be confirmed).  But why not give people the benefit of the doubt and just wait till they open their mouth (obviously the boardroom aspect is limited by time, and you may not get people's attention if they have formed an inaccurate opinion of your abilities based on your apperance, but then thats their fault as opposed to yours, although it may mean you loose out on the deal).

Anyway, not judging people based on appearances might help set H. sapiens apart from other species even further.

Ideological wishful thinking I know, but it would be nice.

can't be doing too much scrutinising of this link as i'm at work....

BUT the main one that springs to mind was one of the lasses with knuckle lettering (can't remember what it said) that was looking smudged as if it'd been done with a felt-tip pen!

Some very cool pictures on there, I can't see most of the other links / sites in work though.   ::)  Probably just as well as I always end up wanting full back pieces and the like after having a browse.   ;D

I do think it's a shame that tattoos and piercings are seen as something which needs to be hidden in certain jobs, and circles of people, but I don't see it changing much in the near future unfortunately.  I doubt very much there will ever be a time when it's considered alright for me to do a front of house job while sporting full sleeves or a chest plate.

Agree it was a poor Von D photo :(

I think it'll become more and more commonplace and acceptable to have tattoos on 'public skin'. Seeing this thread makes me want to get some more work done! Not sure who to go to now though, Diego (http://mvltattoos.com/diego.htm) is pretty good and works from Leeds hrmm

This is my foot just after being done, don't have any photos of my leg sleeve (sorry about the size)

Did getting your foot done really hurt, I am tempted to have something done on one of mine as it's easily hideable, but people have said it's really painful.
Title: Re: Just one more piercing and it's perfect..
Post by: vivahate on January 08, 2010, 03:36:26 pm
I guess it's more painful than your shin (but not as bad as the back of your knee!  :'( or your chest). I always feel OK really if I have a big meal before a session and a couple of ibuprofen. I guess it depends on who is doing it really, it's not so uncomfortable that it should put you off I don't think

EDIT : found one of my leg the day it was coloured, took something like 6 hours

I am guessing shin is similar to the base of your spine, since it's close to bone?  The only other place I have had one done is my stomach, and it was sore, but I think that was more down to the time it took due to skin stretch and pulled muscles from being so tense.

The one on your leg is cool.  No wonder it took so long, it's pretty involved!

Shin is fine because you deaden the nerves kicking it on stuff  but you can feel it rattle all through your leg bit strange! Not sure about base of the back but I know on your chest bone is supposed to be terrible, my friend cried tears of pain and he had had over 60 hours of tattoos before getting his chest done!

Title: Re: Just one more piercing and it's perfect..
Post by: Falling Down on January 08, 2010, 08:18:06 pm
When I had my chest piece done, the lower bit felt like someone was pulling my nipple off with a pair of pliers and then the breastbone was just hideous. Not as painful as the other side but just horrible having a needle bouncing off the bone and echoing in my lungs and head..

I am an idiot.

Looks like a lot of work for a session, was it a nightmare?

You're right, that photo was after session number two. Number one was just the outline.

Nightmare? No not really.. very painful around the lower chest/armpit and the collarbone/breastbone and uncomfortable throughout but no tears or need to stop.

Burt at Black Cat in Whaley Bridge did it and the sleeve/cover up.  He worked in Brum and Brighton for a few years and moved up here on his canal barge which suited me fine.

When I had my chest piece done, the lower bit felt like someone was pulling my nipple off with a pair of pliers ....

You should try getting your nips pierced, they (almost) pull your nipples off to have enough skin/space to push the needle through.

Nice natural high afterwards, augmented the cannabis high nicely, shame about the three-four days of pain afterwards (which was ameliorated by said cannabis  :P).

i was thinking about having my back tattoo slightly modified and getting another one in my right shin, but the 400 euros they asked made me think about it a bit more.
shame.

Nice. Parrot/fish thing FD, looks great.

I'm up for ink but the decision is so difficult. It's going to involve a seagull but..... :-\

Maybe I should just get BHAFC on my knuckles (LH).

HAVE SOME YOU CAAANTT!!! Oh wait, I'm an accountant and I don't hit people in the face on a regular basis. Discreet seagull on left shoulder then.......

I've got a half sleeve, chest plate a half completed back piece and several other tattoos on my other arm and legs.  I keep them covered up when I'm working.  I know I'd get a different reaction presenting a multi-million pound project proposal to an executive a boardroom in London, Houston or Singapore if I was wearing a vest, shorts and trainers with several square feet of ink on show as opposed to a suit, collar and tie.
i know you are a really nasty gnarly bastard. especally in the surf, the ink confirms it!!!
if any of you meet FD in the water, take care and definately don't snake or fade him

I missed FD's tattoo, and I really wanted to see it too, but I was worried it would look pervy if I asked.   :'(  Should have been bold like Stubbs.   ;)

I only wish Tink was good enough to look like a gang tat, she's got a squint.

Trying to design a piece for myself at the moment.
I only have one, very small, bit of ink at the moment and want to get something slightly bigger on the inside of one of my forearms or calves - pain factors??

There is an awesome tattoo shop in Bray, Ireland called Atattooed so once designed, I will be getting it committed to be selected appendage there!

Had the inside of my forearm tatooed and barely noticed any pain (compared to nipple piercing anyway!).

calves hurt yes and forearms not as bad as inside of bicep and over tricep
as does the side of the Knee,

but elbows... now there is a completely different kettle of fish ....

neither really compare to nipple piercing especially when it is the second time and scar tissue has built up, but that is over very quickly the tattoo is more of a long drawn out stabbing/scratching/burning pain.....

I didnt find the pain of the nipple piercing too bad... but then the subconcious took over and tried to make me faint. :spank: :-[
Best word to describe tattoo pain is i think keen.

The piercing itself wasn't too bad, but the clamping of the nipple was what hurt at the time.  I then found I felt quite good for a few hours  afterwards until the endorphins had worn off, then my chest just ached for a good day or two each time I've had it done (N == 3 due to one almost being ripped out which I took out and left to heal before having it re-pierced).

Tattoo  pain is quite good pain, piercing pain is not.

I am too scared to have anything else pierced due to needle terror.

I used to be very keen on piercings (maxed out at 14 with just the one in my ear!). I used to quite like the pain and although the clamping pinches a bit but it seemed to render immediate area slightly numbed so you don't notice the needle as much as you might otherwise. My only piercing that wasn't clamped was my ampallang which had to be done freehand.

I'm now piercing free having removed my facial piercings shortly after joining the accountancy profession and removed the rest, nipples etc, as and when they caused me problems like being ripped out or when i lost the jewellery. I would still have the ampallang but it was removed by the docs after a car accident which lead to being catheterised for a few weeks while my pelvis healed  :'(

I've been thinking about getting more ink for ages now but have been struck by long term indecisiveness. I've got a Chinese style monochrome dragon on my left chest that I'd like to get worked into a chest / shoulder plate but I've moved away from where i had it done so I need a new artist. Does anyone know any good artists in the southwest (Bristol ideally)?

Please don't tell me he purposely cut it off as an exercise in body modification?  If so, why didn't he cut to the chase and cut off his own head?

No idea, random pic found on another forum.  There are some very weird people on BME, but cutting your own finger off for aesthetics would put you up there as one of the dumbest people in the world.

So glad I waited until I got home to Google ampallang.
